Talk of The Devils Podcast

Yeah I get that. I always got the sense that he feels a sense of superiority to the average fan because he’s a United journalist and because of his contacts.

As much as he generally seems quite affable, he doesn't need to say he's a journalist so much and constantly explain how sourcing works.

Mitten is a good journalist, so much knowledge, I just find him incredibly dry and dull to listen to. His personality is just, well there isn't much.

He is very dull. And he pollutes interviews often with far too many anecdotes. He just gives anecdote after anecdote and says things in the same way.

E.g. If we were to play Club Brugge he'll say - "Club Brugge are a good side. They have a dedicated set of fans. I remember when I was there in 2014, and it was near Christmas. I spoke to some of their fans and hitch hiked my way through Belgium. One group took me into their pub and I tried local beer. It was nice. Better than Laurrie's cocktails. They wanted me to stay but I didn't have time. What were we talking about again?"

I do like Mitten but that’s spot on

He'd definitely add a name drop in there somewhere, something like:

"And you'll never guess who I saw, but as I drank my beer Ritchie de Laet's Dad came up to me and said 'I bet you don't remember back when Ritchie was at United and you said to me that Ritchie of yours is certainly a Belgian football player who plays for Manchester United and then we both laughed at the banal observation you made' so I told him I did remember actually and we both laughed and went our separate ways."

 so true.

He's a sound guy you can tell, and I respect his graft and how he still sells his United we stand magazine. But needs to be more interesting.

I think all of the 'caracters' in Talk of the Devils have a role to play and seem to be almost a caricature of their actual selves. Anka the football Nerd, Laurie the hipster journalist, Mitten the ever rambling uncle who's actually been through some nice things. Maybe it feels forced (the talk of cocktails or double pivots or meeting a Ferencvaros fan who tried to pole vault the Berlin wall or whatever Mitten's about) but they've made many of my trips to and from work a lot nicer!

See I love those anecdotes and his general dry humor

TOTD is great as it is. It’s the only pod I listen to regularly and that’s because it’s not sensationalist, it’s not knee jerk or opinionated and it’s not over hyped and bombastic.

A calm, clear discussion of the club dealing in facts not speculation built on a platform of solid journalism and integrity.

The 4 guys are very likeable too. It has a welcoming pint down the pub with your mates vibe and is always a fun listen even when the football/club news is morbid and depressing.

Mitten is a dyed in wool, born and bred, proud of his city red - he’s done more than plenty for the club and for the fans too. Just recently he was up Kilimanjaro for the clubs foundation in the benefit of disadvantaged folk in and around Manchester. I too love his annecdotes, adds an human element to the pod and Andy is a very knowledgable and interesting guy. Anybody criticising him is basically clueless. Just my 2p.

Can't knock Mittens Utd credentials, the fella runs a fanzine, has been everywhere through the shit and the good - but that said, some of the tongue in cheek criticism of him in here is spot on to!

I dont mind them at times either. I just think he's too telegraphed when he talks and often always gives an anecdotal answer.

That being said I would always give him a listen. Whereas Anka I really couldn't give a toss about.

Yeah the more I read these comments the more I actually realise I do like him and it is always the first podcast I look for when I go onto Spotify. I suppose not everyone just gets him humour but I too enjoy his stories. He’s built himself an impressive career and like others have said on here he doesn’t rely on sensationalism.

That’s him

I like him. Very knowledgeable and a good guy.

 so true. I like the podcast but the ‘banter’ between them is a bit cringe at times

Anka is the best of the bunch in my opinion. He even learned Dutch!

he's saying it how it is about Hojlund . Maybe thats annoying some people

I’m a big fan of Mitten I have to say. Never any hysterical takes, obviously loves the club, has a bit of a dream job honestly but he works hard at it. I never got the feeling he’s arrogant, the UWS podcast he’s great at stopping anyone for a word and is always patient with people who have limited English or whatever.

Carl Anka is fine on the pod but I can take him leave him. Think he tries too hard to be the “noticing the minutiae” one. He chimes in with stuff like “in the 23rd minute Bruno got the ball and he turned and kicked it to the left back. Two weeks ago he was kicking that to the right winger.” Feel like he picks moments and then tries to work them in like it’s a deep nuanced tactical understanding.

Pfft you wanna give our pod a listen mate ;)

I’m the same. Mitten’s role is to add some local flavour and the insight he has from his contacts within the squad. Both of which he does very well. Plus he seems like a nice, personable bloke.

The rest of them are also all likeable and enthusiastic characters. I find Anka a bit of a dose due to the very strong vibes of “YouTube tactico” I get from him. But he obviously gets on well with the other lads and that keeps the whole thing feeling nice and warm and fuzzy. Even when the football has been unbearable. Which is quite an achievement.

Anyone else there tonight? Thought it was pretty good and glad Carl got the applause his point deserved at the end.

To be fair to Carl, he is meant to be the tactics guy. That's what the Athletic hired him to do, he writes a lot of the post match tactical analysis for United games. It's fair enough if it's not your thing, but feels harsh to hold that against him.

He does an interview every now and then, like I think he interviewed Cantona not too long ago. Laurie is the scoops guy for breaking news, transfers, etc, and Mitten is local flavour and human touch guy, as you've said. They're a good mix, with Ian the experienced broadcaster as host.

Carl is normally pretty on it as well. He got very frustrated under Ole and said we'd never win the league if we continued to play in that style, and was very much against Ole getting the permanent job before the season was over to begin with. He got lots of stick for it, some of it very personal, so much so he took a sort of sabbatical, I think. I remember Mitten going on a 10 minute rant lambasting all the people who had sent abuse to Carl in a pod around that time.

Hindsight is 20:20, but Carl was obviously vindicated in regards to Ole as manager.
