Take 2 - Ferguson talks (without pinky and perky this time please)

I think Giggs and the Nevilles will be going, Giggs has lost his touch. And the Nevilles make too many mistakes. I hope Giggs gets back to his best though as he is untouchable when he is on form.

Giggs is to valuable an assett especially in the C/L..He won't be going anywhere

The easiest part of the 'nucleus' to improve would be Gaz, the others would be highly debateable;
Becks, aside from his qualities on the field is one of the biggest commodities in football.
Keano- yes we should be thinking about the gulf that will be left by his retirement in a few seasons as he won't become a squad player, but hes our most consistent and influencial player.
Scholes is our best player this season.
Giggs has not been at his brilliant best but who would do better.
Butt is hard to fault also, to have a player of his quality as a squad player is pretty good going.
Anyway before we talk about rebuilding 'the nucleus', I would assume we would take a hard look at Veron, much though we want him to succeed, he is the biggest canidate for the chop considering his value vs productivity.

Giggs is the oldest of our home grown guys, and been around the longest. He's also one of the most injury prone and losing his pace, and value, and possibly desire. He's most likely imo.

Keane is the frightening one, but he's the oldest, and his body has loads of problems, not to say his emotions too. No one knows how you can adequately replace him, but we're going to have to some time and with Keane repeatedly asking to not be captain anymore, you have to consider it.

The Nevilles are the other obvious candidates, but only one of those is really part of the nucleus, but I've always thought that they'd go as a 'job lot'.

Risky business, but Alex isn't afraid of taking risks and making brave decisions.

When has Keano "repeatedly" asked to be stripped of the armband, I am assuming you are referring to the Shearer incident when for the better of the team- he wanted relived of the captain duties, but after Fergie having a one on one with him, was more than happy to continue. Why do people on this site try and make an issue out of something that is evidently not there. If Keano hadn't mentioned this in his book you would have been none the wiser.

but why keane??

of all the players we've got he's the one with most hunger...

he's still got atleast two good seasons...

name me a player, who could do a better job for united?? not many that i can think of.

Thats somewhat true, though I don't think he's as effective as he was 4-5 years ago, and his temper and unpredictability are proving to be a liability at times, thus diluting what he brings to the pitch in terms of hunger and leadership. I'm confident that Butt can pick up the slack if we lose Keano (which we will at some point).

Nicky Butt does not offer what Keane does on the pitch, fair enough he is a great player, but Keane offers a lot more in terms of drive ambiton and leadership.Personally I think Keano is still as good as he was 4 years ago if not better

I don't see Keane going just yet, i sure hope not.
He has said that he would not be happy sitting on the bench, he doesn't mind being rested but he would not be happy with being a squad player. He would probably then go to Celtic like he has always said he would. I don't see why he can't continue for at least 2 more campaigns at United. Butt is good cover for Keano, but they are different leagues really, Keane is the best player in that position anywhere IMO. As far as looking to an eventual replacement, there are few players with his stature at present.

keane just said that he's changing the way he plays, maybe he meant that he's going to be like what what butt does-cleaning up before and after veron, and letting him control midfield?

keane to M.E.N:
"In a funny, crazy kind of way all the injuries I have had have worked out to be a benefit to me. "I always feel I come back fitter, better and stronger. I learn a lot as well when I am out of the team about what I can give to the side. I have learnt a lot in the last three months. I always come back wiser. People might not think it but I do. I have learnt about my body and what I am capable of doing and not capable of. When I get back I need to think about what I should be doing. I run around trying to do too much in matches. In training, too, I try to do too much. In five-a-sides I am desperate to win. I always want to win. But I am 31 now and I need to take a step back and look where I have gone wrong. I think I was going wrong in a lot of places. You say that me charging around is what Roy Keane is about but I think sometimes I charge around and actually get nowhere! I have this thing in my head, for instance, that I need to get forward. But you look at my goal record over the last two or three years and it is abysmal so I don't know why I have got it in my head that I am an attacking midfielder! I will still be a team player don't get me wrong, but I think I take on too many roles and I shouldn't be. My form for a number of months this season and last was poor. I haven't played very well. I know that for a fact. People may say I was playing well but I know I wasn't. It was all down to the hip problem. I had suffered with it for months. I had been nursing it, having days off, working with the physio instead of being out training with the lads. I won't have that when I return so I can concentrate on becoming an even better player."

Keano, Keano, Keno, Keano!

He's a fecking Traveller, but I've never ever seen a player so honest about his and other football ability. He's class, and in pure football terms lots of sense.

He'll end up at CB for us in a couple of years, you wait and see. Good to see a player that assesses himslef so well. It's obvious he couldn't be the box-to-box player for much longer.

Keano, Keano, Keano.

agreed, about his temper..

however, Nicky Butt isn't in the same league.. Keano is a box to box player, Butty, is a defensive midfielder.. so they are very different types of midfielders!

someone like Vieira could replace Keane... but Keane is still the best 'engine' or 'box to box' player out there. IMO.

But Keano's saying he'll be more of a defensive midfielder from now on, and less box to box.

Unless its with Butt basically. I'd have liked Keane and Butt against Arsenal with Scholes in a 4-5-1. :(

There is an Aussie Rules coach over here called Mick malthouse who went over to OT for a few weeks to have a look at the training techniques. He became very friendly with SAF and still keeps in touch. One of the comments he made about Fergie was that they were similar in that they don't like staleness to get to their teams. They like to change on a regular basis and not rely on the same bunch of players. I believe that SAF is now on the point of changing but I don't think it will be wholesale. I think Giggs may go and I believe it will be beneficial to him if he does. He's in his own comfort zone at the moment and needs to be taken out to get back some of the Ryan we all used to know, though possibly not to the benefit of United.
