Strong Worthy team for you lot...

Well Phil Neville made a kind of Freudian slip on MUTV saying it should be taken seriously as it's a way into Europe.

Things you wish you hadn't said......

At least the players have accepted you're no longer what you were...

Do think Houllier will field a strong team as well, it's his way. Besides the teams don't want to take any unnecessary defeats at this stage of the season. Especially as you're undefeteated against English teams (points losses you obviously have and the Valencia and Basel farce) and I actually put a few quids on you.

We'll play a strong team yes, I expect certain squad players to get a chance but we generally play a decent side..

You don't usually tho, it seems a bit strange that you have this year doesn't it?

Is it not obvious why we put a strong team out in the Worthy? There is only one way to out do the Treble you know.......

We've been struggling abit lately so it's good to get the habit of winning back at this vital stage of the season.

The world and his wife can see we haven't gelled as a team, regardless of how good the personnel. Maybe AF sees the need for games to try and put things right.

Maybe

But then playing the likes of May is not going to help you gel as a team is it? I found it a slightly strange side as I would have thought you'd have played more kids...maybe that left back who has made your squad on occasion this season, instead if playing May, or the likes of O'Shea out of position...

Well that's Leicster out of the way. Come May we'll look back and say that was the game that turned the tide ;) .

Maybe May needs a shop window in order to be sold.

And O'Shea was brilliant last night. He has now played right across the back four.

I think he's in goal this weekend.

Although many of us already expect a somewhat stronger lineup in Lecister's game compared to last few seasons before the match, the resulting lineup including Beckham, Gary, Phil, Rio, Ole (and Veron, Scholes on the bench) is still very surprising. What do you think is the reason for Fergie changing his "normal practice"?
1. He get the external pressure from fans or organizer to field a stronger team
2. He think most of the players don't seem tired and there is no need for they to rest.
3. After the trophyless season, Fergie now think that a micky mouse cup is better than nothing at all.
4. He doesn't think other young players besides Nardello, Richardson and Pugh will have any chance to become good enough for us in near future.
5. Other reason.

So you Manc fans want to win the competition or not?

You usually seem to think its beneath you? Sounds like many stayed away from OT last night as well...

I want us to enter everything, and have always been disappointed when weak teams have been put out in the competition.

ANd with games against City and BL coming up, there's a limit to what people can afford.

Yes, but in fairness you're not one of one of those who saw our attempting to win every comp we enter as a weakness...since you've started to field kids for the WC most on here have dismissed it as "worthless"

This is the first season you have failed to sell out OT isn't it? A fact often brought up to boast about when we fail to sell out Anfield...

I wonder why the fans are staying away all of a sudden?

.

Because comparitively thats a small gate for you...you Mancs like to boast how you can fill OT for any game, whereas thats clearly not the case..

Well it isn't anymore anyway..

the quite strong team was because it was our first home worthless cup tie in 4 years

and we got nearly 50k whats bad about that?

so if you're drawn away next round you'll play a much weaker side?

See above re attendance..

Can't speak for everyone. But if I had to pick one game out of the three, it would be the derby on Saturday. Secondly it would be the game against Leverkeusen. With me it would be down to finances.

Such reasons have not been deemed valid in response to criticism about failing to fill Anfield for midweek games in the past..

yes

beckham played because he hasnt got another game for a week

g.nev and rio for more fitness

fergie said he owes it to the sponsers to not totally put out a weak team for our first home tie in 4 years

and davo when your not even selling out your league games how can you question our gates?

We'll still have at least 18k more than you'll manage today

Fair do's re Beckham..I doubt he'd have played if he wasn't suspended, but then surely Scholes would have been his replacement?

We'll see next round if you're drawn away from home then..

We do sell out our league games! and I'm not having a go at your gate, simply pointing out that previous claims that you sell out OT for every game are false..because you quite clearly can't. Get it?

I almost agree. Exepct I think that it is a useful training session for the emerging players. I think that we should keep trying to play a strong enough side to win games while blooding some youngsters. A difficult balancing act but you never know.

I dont know who made that claim, I certainly didnt.

It does disprove the theory that MU fans will turn up simply to watch the grass grow.

We're still a far cry from those average 43k gates when Big Ron was in charge.

Well they wouldn't be, would they........all part of the rivalry.

Look at the facts:

1) Carroll played in goal, our third choice.

2) GNev has just returned from injury, so could do with the game. Same for Rio.

3) David May, our fifth choice CB had his yearly outing.

4) John O'Shea has not played much recently so could have done with a game.

5) Forlan normally only gets subs appearances.

6) Becks is the strange one, although he is suspended for the weekend which would explain his choice

7) Fortune needs a game.

8) PNev Hardly our first choice?.

9) Ole normally only gets subs appearances.

10) Nardiello gets in for experiences.

Hardly a first team though was it Davo?.

Regarding finances, I think the same thing affects the scousers equally. I've always noticed a drop in attendances at Anfield after a new police initiative lowers the crime rate temporarily.

You still don't get it do you?

Yes, the league games are sold out at Anfield but week in week out season ticket holders fail to turn up to watch.

Even if they can't get to Anfield themselves you would have thought they would have found someone to make use of their ticket.

In the past United have fielded a reserve team in a competition both fans and players see as a low priority. The gate is obviously going to be lower than normal as fans can pay £2 to see the same players play in the reserve team on thursdays.

The sponsors and PLC however obviously see things differently and pressure may have been put on so that higher gate figures result.

This does put Fergie in the position of being able to blood youngsters along with seasoned players who need the games through fitness/other problems.

This is all hypothetical of course because I am not connected with anyone inside OT and I went as usual, had a top time as usual, thought the daytrippers were c*nts for not turning up and Davo can shove is windup up his arse.

And the advantage for the youngsters is that they are playing in a semi experienced side and therefore will have better service and support rather than fielding a completely inexperienced team which is likely to be overrun, something which does nothing for budding reputations or confidence.
Beckham was included btw to keep his mind on football and away from the kidnap issue - according to Fergie.
