Strikers

klose is overrated, jancker´s signed for udinese ... neuville´s more of a winger, but he aint bad.

donovan might be worth the money, mathis wouldnt hack it at utd.

Mathis is actually much better than what you saw at the WC, just need to be around big names so he'll cool down a bit. we're talking 4th striker here, might as well get someone who knows he will have to prove himself every chance he gets. Americans, like them or not, they KNOW they have to do such, in every match. Reyna, Keller and Friedel have done well in the Premier for that same notion.

here's a crazy idea: get Claudio Caniggia from Rangers. that will hold the 4th spot for a year until we get more cash.

as a Rangers fan, i've seen CC kicking some serious arse last season, and he still got it.

Here is one that had a reasonable world cup, less than 10m, his club is willing to let him go (selling club) and he even speaks english...

Robbie Keane

though they can't get Anderton in return... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

No bidders for Fiorentina as deadline looms

FLORENCE, July 26 - by Nadia Carminati (DS) Fiorentina's problems are not over. In fact after an auction yesterday, but there were no offers to take over the Florence club. The judicial administrator Fazzini said that he was seriously worried about the future of the club after this latest piece of dissappointing news, also because at this point owner Cecchi Gori has to find about 22 millions Euros before July the 29th, the last day necessary to sign Fiorentina in for the next Serie B championship. If this does not happen there will be another auction on the 30th of July. But speaking about this possibility Fazzini concluded that without a postponement by the Italian League (Lega Calcio) of the July 29th deadline, the bank won't accept an offer for a second auction. If there is no other auction, Fiorentina will disappear form Italian soccer.

Gomes for free?

He is a bit of a handful, on and off the pitch. Liked your Donovan idea better, particularly the previous points about the US market. Given that we are talking 4th striker and he is certainly not bad at all, why not look into it? Particularly with this whole Yankees and U.S. tour thing going on. Sure it could be a very good way to get a foothold and some more interest in the U.S.!

I know some might not like this plc kind of reasoning but, after all, that's why we can afford a 30m defender when we want one!

Jes. I thought NO ONE was going to spot that

Probably everyone spotted it.

I just had my fingers in full flight on the keyboard......

Typo was it?

(Raoul, i hope this OT source doesn't moonlight in a sp. mgmt. co.)

to me it seems Ronaldinho could be our next big signing - but next summer which, if true, is the only scenario where a loan signing or PdC could tide us over till next season. if on the other hand, the board does not see a 25-30m attacking MF/forward as essential to the club's success, then we should be looking at a long-term prospect right now, and while there are many of those around, none come for less 10m.

if we can get Eidur for around 12m, it's a good deal, but he's not going to like being third-choice...
and if we do invest all 10m, does it mean we will not be moving for Gaucho next summer? of course his valuation could come down, given the frozen market and the fact that we're probably going to be the only club solvent enough to afford him.
in that case, will Diego be used as back-up winger - however enthusiastic he is now, he may not enjoy that too much - did come in a with a more than useful scoring record, but seems now to be a 'scorer of great goals, not a great goal-scorer' - Anty, your thoughts on his S.Am record....

point is, any move we make now has to be with one eye on the future, that's the way the PLC functions - so any decent money spent now could rule out a big future move for a player in a similar position, having 4 strikers this season could mean the board will not part with 2m for another attacking player, let alone 20m, unless they're sold on the idea that Forlan's position will be altered -

on the other hand, with PSG likely to be sold, Ronnie II's probably being marked down, and we could move for him paying 10m now, and a further 10-15m next summer...

tough decision-making time for AF and PK...

btw, the official site had a bit on past no.9 wearers and listed Andy Cole as having scored 121 in 235, and it spooked Glenn Hoddle a bit, but i'm sure it's 275...

If you want a bargain, why not consider Jari Litmanen. Ok he is old, but so was Teddy. He would suit the style SAF wants to play, just behind RVN and he is a very good passer of the ball. With two wide players in Giggsy and Becks it would be similar to Ajax in 1995. He doesn't suit in Liverpool, because the play so boring with longballs to quick strikers.

i think that any more striker signings will be either paulo di canio, or rivaldo on a free, thats the only way we will buy under 10 million IMO.

unless we have alredy signed replacement, before those comments.

Yorke's departure just freed up 40k a week of wage money that were flushing away every week over the past two years. We should be able to apply that to a new transfer, whether its a free, loan, or purchase - we have to get more cover up front.

4-5-1 will work with Diego imo. We just need backup. Besides, 4-5-1 works best when a team is in top form. It is a system that depends on alot of movement. Becasue at any instant any of the midfielders can be in the box supporting the main striker. The best examples of this where our Charity Shield display (despite Henchoz good goal keeping) last season and the second half performance away to Newcastle. In full flow and with all that movement our opponents looked lost imo.

Mal Christie ? Dean Ashton would perhaps be worth a gamble too. But for now, I'd be happy to see Davis move in to the first-team, if only as fourth choice... that's if he doesn't go on loan elsewhere. ;)

Hasselbaink ? No thanks. Great striker but would not sit on the bench. I'd rather Gudjohnsen or even Forsell if we were looking to Stamford Bridge for potential #9s. So my preferances are as follows:

1. Gudjohnsen
2. PDC
3. Christie

:D

anyone else think litmanen loook like he's just come out of a morg, very pale, alsmost went his normal yellow to gray whilst at longballpool, feckin spooky character he is.

Anfield would have that effect on anyone. Litmanen's a class footballer.

How about this:

Don't sign another striker, as we don't need one.

Sensible that! :)

to win the champions league u need two out and out strikers (Ole,RVN), and two deep strikers Forlan??? and .......?????.

in 99 we had Ole and Cole, as the out and out strikers, and sheringham and yorke as the deep linking forwards.

real have class andvariety upfront which makes them unpredictable. also that is also the reason why they score so many.

they have many dribblers in there team, savio, guti.....

we can have teh same effect with variety upfront.

maybe fergie will play ayoungster like richardson, djordic etc.. upfront from time to time, a position where a mistake could be easily recovered.

This would seem like the opportune time to promote one of the younger players. If not now, when?
