very good winger and a real match winner on his day - i've always been impressed by him when we've played boro and he gave rafael a tough time at old trafford - still relatively young and should move on if and its looking likely middlesbrough go down - won't cost the earth and would improve any squad

does anyone think this could be a good addition bearing in mind nani's form and giggs age limiting his ability to get up and down the wing like a younger players??

or is ronaldo, park, nani and tosic a case of too many cooks.....

Far too slow for United, he's just so one-paced

He's English, so will cost a premium, we seem to be being linked to Valencia for only a few million more than the Downing price, I know who I'd rather have

Not including today's game he's got 33 starts in the premiership this season and has 0 goals and just 3 assists.

Dude wins less matches than an english tennis player.

I've seem more talent in some of our reserves, and youth squads.

Lee Martin would be just as good.

feck off with Valencia too, give me a lad who plays FOR Valencia and we'll talk

But given the choice for the money, it's a no-brainer, it's not to say that either is a good move

Although, I'd be interested to know what other wingers you feel we could get for about £15-18m

Just because he's left footed means jack all. The lad is utter crap on a stick fed to dogs. He'd never fit in our system. When they get relegated he'll go to Spurs although Spurs really need to start going after more players of the caliber of Modric. Bentley off- to...?

To be honest id rather burn a few seasons trying to get Nani to the level we know he can reach, than but this guy Valencia and give Wigan financial life.

As for that winger question, Boro have one in Johnson who is young and very talented, would come in single digits in the event of relegation.

Downing shouldn't be on the scope of anyone looking to break into European places. There are many players around the globe who are better that would cost a fraction of the £10-15m fee supposidly quoted.

I agree that Johnson is more of a talent than him, I'd take him over Downing any day...neither are good enough for us though.

the same downing who has started every game and not a scored a goal for a team that has won only twice all season .... match winner you say?

I'm waiting for the inevitable "Michael Owen - what do you think?" thread after Liverpool thrash Toon next week.

Lord God and Allah above no.

He' had a good game today and might cause us problems next weekend but never produces and consistent form. Shows flashes of being good enough for a UEFA cup side...and nothing else.

is this a wind up?

its seems a lot of you have been watching downing a lot more than me....

havent seen much of him this season - only really in the united game where he had a good game

in past seasons though he has been decent and lets face it - stats don't always paint an accurate picture

but if you lot have seen him regulary then its a big NO

I work with a Boro season ticket holder and he said Downing has done well this year - despite playing in a frankly poor team.

When (not if) Boro go down then they'll be a few clubs after him - he's a decent player and more importantly is left footed which is a rarity.

I can see him ending up at Spurs next season with his mate Woodgate.
