Steven Gerrard Autobiography | Extracts

I read that as bit of a dig at Scholes, that he had great players around him to make him look better. Especially with the bit right before it.
I read it more as him belittling the players he had to play with at that time and elevating himself above them, as per the Stevie Me way.

Well Keane was still actively playing in the PL. Plus you can't really compare the two incidents.
Quite. I'm not sure what people are on about, here. You don't get banned for admitting you did the thing. You do get banned if you claim you planned to do the thing in advance.

Gerrard on the Real Madrid away game:

"While it was only a one-nil defeat it did feel like Brendan Rodgers had surrendered even before kick-off."

Nice timing for this.

Gerrard's book gets to feed off the publicity of the derby, whilst his former team mates and manager have the distraction of his musings whilst they prepare.

Real club man.

Well he is, famously, a one-man man.

"After I finally finished building Anfield's new stand with my bare hands, I sat down for an important chat with this week's Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers."

None of them - Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney etc etc - are though. None of them made any significant mark on World Cup tournaments, and rarely in the Euros. This is the plain truth about our top English/British talents: they're second-tier players, not world class, and are big fishes in a PL goldfish bowl. If not, where are their international tournament medals, where are their Ballon D'Or awards? I don't believe my opinion is even vaguely controversial.

"If you want to know how it feels to have the undying, obsessive love of Liverpool fans, just look my ever-smiling face."

This confuses me. If we look through the threads regarding club v country the majority of people rate club football over internationals however we then end up using international football via the WC etc as some sort of measuring stick as to whether someone is world class or not.

Eh, I disagree. Scholes was world class, I'd say Rio was too. Lampard, Gerrard, Terry and Rooney were all major players in sides that have won the Champions League, 'second-tier' is pretty harsh.

"I can't even tell you if the streets were thick with traffic or as empty as I was on the inside."

Woah, man. Deep.
Oh mine, it's hilarious... Reading through these "extract", I felt like it's written by someone else to mock him, as a joke. Is he for real?

The Neville knocking on his door part, it looks like Gary was making fun of him. LOL

I see myself as agnostic, bordering on atheist.

That said, if ever there was a proof that god exists... that slip was the closest thing that I've seen.

I'm a Man Utd fan but I do feel sorry for him at times. Should have won at least 1 league title.
Why? He's only one person. If he had won one title it means Liverpool won one. Why would you think he should??

I agree to an extent, but where do players like Scholes, Ferdinand, Cole and Terry come into it? Surely they belong in the upper echelon of elite footballers, despite winning the square root of f a internationally.

Ashley Cole should be added to that list also.

Some of those lines are so fecking cringeworthy. Streets as empty ad me inside, my fecking battleground, didn't play a crossfield pass to set up the winner but slipped etc.

He's so fecking full of himself.

Owen won the Ballon D'Or. Lampard and Beckham came second and Gerrard came third in one season. Rooney has been placed 5th, 8th (twice) 13th, 15th and 23rd in the Ballon D'Or rankings in his career. Does football only have one world class player per year in your opinion?

You might not believe your opinion is controversial but it is drowned in bias and ridiculousness.

It reminds me of when Roy Keane told of a speech the Queiroz gave them. Carlos informed them that the only world class player in the United squad was Barthez because he had won the World Cup. Of course Keane liked that idea because it meant that he could tell everyone that they were not as good as they thought they were. The idea is just silly and born out of simplistic thinking as anyone that watched United in the era would know that Barthez wasn't even up to standard for the United first team.

It was probably written by a RAWK member.

Wonderful

I might have sounded casual in my text but I was much more excited in my bed. I read Brendan's text again

This is pure gold! I swear most of this stuff looks like it could be a piss take from someone here

Who in their right mind would want to waste their money on this garbage? This guy is as bitter as they come.

I agree....I might have that passage about crying after missing out in the title framed though for when I'm needing cheered up

Had to laugh at the extract where he'd like to ask Ferguson why he thought Gerrard was average. Ferguson not regarding Gerrard as a "top, top" player is very different from callng him "average."

In before people claim how terrible Messi was at every single major competition he has been at.

However I disagree. At club level all 3 of them achieved a lot and led their teams to success, it is sufficient. England national team has always been badly organized and dysfunctional, not necessarily players' fault.

Ashley Cole should be added to that list also.

Anybody that tells you Ashley Cole wasn't a world class left back ( I hate that term) isn't worth listening to.

Of all the English players to have played during the supposed golden generation, Cole excelled in his position moreso than any other. A genuinely fantastic defender.

it's obvs heavily ghost-written with much emotional & poetic licence revolving around

1) I carried The Liverpool Football Club of Liverpool for years

2) I have a bit of a God complex

3) We nearly won the League, but I fell over

don't think I'll be buying it, meself

They. Will. Love. It.

These extracts read like one of the lads on here has written them. It's pure parody. The Herrera/Mata extract is genuinely mental. His pride at cleaning out one of the weakest players in the Premier League is the mark of an imbecile.

Who's that coming up the hill?

Gerrard crying in the back of a taxi.

In 2004, Ferguson had called me 'the most influential player in England, bar none' and suggested that 'anyone would love to have Gerrard in their team'.
Haha.
So I was a little hurt and surprised when 13 years later, Ferguson used his autobiography to insist he was one of the few who never thought I was 'a top, top player'. I wouldn't lose any sleep but I was slightly taken aback after all his praise.
Haha.
The only point that mattered was that I have real respect for Ferguson, but I wondered how many league titles he thought Scholes or Keane might have won if they had played for Liverpool.
Haha.
I would have done OK in a United team playing alongside Keane in midfield with David Beckham on the right, Ryan Giggs on the left and Ruud van Nistelrooy up front. I would have managed pretty well in that side.
Haha.

How do Liverpool fans feel about that? Literally he's just saying 'I was amazing' and 'my club was shit'. It's so bitter...it's cringe.

''there was only me trying and Stoke were proving a real handful.... I scored and urged the lads to raise their game... we were only 5-1 down...''

''Palace were in town for my send off... it was obviously going to be an emotional day for the fans... we were getting battered, but should have had at least 4 penalties in the first half...''

''my penis was hanging off... could I play on Tuesday, I pondered bravely... as the Doc stitched it back together''

Its not controversial, but it is wrong all the same for the obvious reasons that that would mean Ronaldo and Messi werent world class because, where are their international medals? Ok they have a few Ballon D or awards that dont really mean much since players can win that then disappear off the radar (kaka) but that would also mean there have only been two world class players in the last 7 or so years.

Lampard finished second in the BDO, Gerrard third and all of these players have made countless european XI's. Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Rooney etc were all undoubtedly world class once, this is not even up for debate.

Seriously? All these quotes can't be from the actual book... surely. It's too good to be true.
