State of the refs in this country
He had to come through Martial's leg first to touch the ball. That means it's a foul. There is also the excessive force debate. He hit him so hard it flipped him round and smashes his head into the ground.

Obviously it's hard for refs to see that at full speed and can't always get it right 100%, but he was calling every soft little foul for watford every time Pereyra and the others got the slighest of touches.

Cleanly taking the ball and then catching them with the follow through is OK, but he can't get the ball without taking him out with it. Clear foul all day long for me.

He nicks the ball before he touches him and if that's really excessive force we must be close to banning physical contact?

I've watched it quite a few times and I still don't know if I think it's a foul or not, it's so 50/50. I can see why he didn't give a free kick and if he had blown I can see why he would have given a free kick.

I didn't think it was a penalty though, that was a dive!
It's very close to the limits but watch as his toe pokes the ball, his hip/leg is hitting Martial at the same time. That isn't a clean tackle in my eyes, he's had to initiate contact with him to get to the ball.

Add in the fact that the only reason he got to the ball was his extra speed allowing him to push through Martial's body and knock him off balance. If he was standing still he wouldn't have reached through him like that.

Ugh I don't know, I can see both points of view and I am not really angry with the ref, but considering some of the free kicks he gave in the game there is no consistency. We only have ourselves to blame anyway.

We are getting clattered out there and this Cnut does nothing.

Honestly, his refereeing is beyond worryingly shit.

I can understand Clattenburg missing a decision but signaling his arms were tucked to chest, when his arm was stretched out blocking the shot is fecked up. He's too scared to make big decisions.

Yeah he's beyond help, fecking dogshit. Plenty of small decisions this match, some stupid calls pro Ronaldo and Madrid most of the time, to be fair Ronaldo even kicked out at Schmelzer but refs could not see that (apart from that useless twat behind the goal, the most useless ref).

Bad decisions are a big problem, but add to that all the diving and/or outraged complaining shitheads that makes a tough job even tougher. They need assistance that could easily be provided by technology.

But the refs need to at least make sure that all decisions made in the same game are consistent for and against both teams. Either you accept rough play for both teams or you don't for both teams but maintain a standard.

This is the worst that I've seen so far, and that is saying something.

Well, where do you start.

The penalty decision for McTominay is absolutely scandalous, not to mention dangerous. It's irresponsible not to give a penalty and a red card for that one.

Then there's Van La Parra not getting a yellow card for two blatant acts of sabotage when we're breaking through on the right hand side, plus his foul of Sanchez which is simply ignored.

And no one could've complained in the slightest if Billing had walked for those two fouls on Rojo and McTominay - the first one on McTominay being a particularly staggering decision to not give a yellow for.

Looking at that challenge on McTominay in the box again, I'm actually convinced that should've been a red card. Just look at the ridiculous force of that challenge and they way his head snaps back, he's extremely lucky to escape without any serious damage to his neck. It was a brutal challenge, well deserving of a red and penalty. Nothing given. I have no more words for that.

Yeah it's no discussion. As blatant a red card as you'll ever see. He flattens him with his elbow with brute force, and doesn't get anywhere near the ball. If that's not dangerous foul play, what is?

We got one yellow more than them, just think about that and tell me there's no absolute bias against us in this match.

I'm not sure how many more times Stuart Atwell needs to officiate at this level before it's universally accepted that he isn't cut out for the Premier League.

Like, good on him for trying, but who the feck keeps putting him out there? It's cruel.

Heard on my telecast this was his first PL match in 6.5 years. I thought I heard it wrong. Could someone confirm this?

Either totally incompetent or biased. Only he knows. He wants to write his own headline by sending off Sanchez at OT on Munich remembrance day.

Must be one of the worst performance by a ref in long time, which is some achievement.

It was a ridiculous challenge. He came charging in with his shoulder, 2 minutes late and didn't make any attempts with his head towards the ball. It's as stonewall a red and a penalty as you'll see and the ref had a clear view.

Dont know where to start? If I was Mourinho I would take a ban to go over this in the post match .. Just to bad to comprehend ..

If a red card was given I don't think a single pundit would argue it. To then see the angle he had makes it even worse.

There is no great referee conspiracy, but surely in this case fans can suggest that on some level he didn't want to give it. There's no other logical reason looking at the footage. And this could still end up a draw. Early goal and arguable red card ends it.

I remember him being demoted years ago and hadn't heard his name again until today, so it's very possible.

A quick google search finds a guardian article from 2009 querying if he's the worst premier league ref ever, then in 2012 he got demoted for almost three years. Here he is still in 2018 making calls like that. And we're supposed to give refs a break and just say oh it's a tough job. In 9 years nobody has been developed that is better? Come on

Ref had clearest view, how he didn't give pen is beyond me. Looked like he was nervous and didn't want to make headlines.

Horrible referee, is he new? Never seen him before. Referees need better training to standardise their interpretation of the rules.

There was a reason he hasn't refereed at this level for a few years. Doubt he will referee at this level again. Horrendous performance.

Ref has allowed us get kicked off the park.

This was s significant factor vs Spurs. The kicked the shit out of Lingard and Sanchez. Lingard tan their midfield ragged in the first 15-20 even after the first goal and he got synically tripped and taken out from behind while they were at full stretch. 3 times by Kane and some other player I can’t remember not a single yellow. It was so blatent and premeditated. That just killed any momentum for us getting back in not it.
