Are there many examples of this ever working out? Or is it just more highlighted when it doesnt work out.
Nowadays you probably just hear more from it. Several movies that are seen as good ones had troubled productions and from everything I heard/read about Lord & Miller, I'm glad they're gone. Apparently they wanted to make a comedy a la Ace Ventura. Not sure if I really believe that, but who knows. You could argue that Rogue One worked out for Disney. The first cut of the movie was supposedly too dark or wasn't to the studios liking, Tony Gilroy came in and handled the reshoots with Gareth Edwards' approval. There's also Suicide Squad, where Warner Brother acted like Guardians of the Galaxy fanboys and the movie ended up being terrible.
Edit: What's really weird about this, is that the producers should have fired them a lot earlier, if they didn't have any agreement on the movie. I mean, usually you hear stuff like this before principal photography begins (Edgar Wright and Ant-Man) or a few days into shooting, but not at the end.
The Zack Snyder situation with Justice League is a strange one. Left production due to the death of his daughter (which is understandable) but this was 2 months after she died and with rumours of it being a mess going on for quite some time and the fact that he has been demoted in the extended universe in favour of Joss Whedon suggests that Warner Brothers probably just didn't like how the film had turned out.
100% spot on mate. Rogue One was a great film with some excellent acting performances too. Even though the outcome was obvious they did an incredible job of making you care about the characters before they died. The story was tight and the emotion throughout the entire film was perfectly done and the tension was real throughout. The Vader ending scene just topped off a great Star Wars story.
Me too, I loved TFA, yes it has many faults, but it has much about it to love too. I can't stand people who just pick faults at things all the time, feck, it was never going to be perfect and it was never going to please everyone but I'm old enough to have seen the original trilogy in the cinema and TFA was fine for me, and many of the Star Wars nerds I speak to agree.
I enjoyed both force awakens and rogue one more than I enjoyed any of the prequels. The just feel more "star wars" than any of them.
I've rewatched TFA many many times now, and don't get bored of watching it, just like the original trilogy.
The prequels on the other hand I bore of very easily and won't watch them if they're on, i wouldn't be opposed to them being remade. There's good stories in there just so horribly told and made.

After seeing the prequels at the cinema, 1,2,3 then getting excited to watch TFA at the movies, which somehow managed to be just as bad as the prequels, just in different ways (Rehash but worse in every single possible way). After all that disappointment, again and again and again, you're reminded of Einsteins definition of insanity and stop bothering at all.
At this point you wonder if you'd even go to see it unless it recieves mindblowing reviews, even then, you wonder why you'd put stock in those same reviewers opinions who proclaimed TFA as "The 3rd best Star Wars film!" at release and find superhero films genius.

I can forgive you for not liking TFA. Because I've grown increasingly lukewarm on it. But to even suggest it is anywhere nearly as bad as the prequels. Well, you're entering crackpot territory there.
I wouldn't really like to rank whats worse between TFA and prequels, what I basically meant was just the fact I personally walked out with a feeling of disappointment similarly to to prequels.
Not to open up this can of worms again, but there was a lot of creativity in the prequels, the score for example gave us a lot of new iconic SW themes that live on even if the films overall were flawed.
JarJarAbrams film was just an plagiarised rehash devoid of any creativity.

I walked out buzzing, like seriously buzzing. From personal preference they may have rehashed parts of a New Hope but they also recaptured the prop design and abandoned the terrible CGI that plagued the Prequels. The dialogue didn't take itself too seriously either, which was again part of the charm of the Originals for me anyway. Even small details like not knowing Reys name until 40mins in, I dunno, to me it was a great step back into the Star Wars universe. It was very, very safe. But I don't mind that as a first film.
Episode 3 was better than TFA for me. Cinematography wise it was good and it had so nice moments but TFA definitely underwhelmed for me. Especially given how great the previews looked.
I enjoyed Rogue One okay but I would have loved it more if it was darker and had the original plotline. Ben Mendelsohn was originally written as a spy inside the main characters spy crew who betrays them all eventually killing most/all of them iirc. If you've seen Bloodline s1, Mendelsohn would have been absolutely superb in that role, especially with how well he did with the more limited and typical Stars Wars villain role he was given.
I totally get what you mean. I didn't like TFA as well. I had huge doubt about Disney after that. Rogue One saved the day for me.
For me, I walked out feeling conflicted. On the one hand, the nostalgia of seeing beloved characters back on the big screen and the modern special effects doing their magic was ... magical.
On the other hand, the story was rubbish. Not only was it a scene for scene remake, it was inferior in every way like a poor photocopy. Just lazy storytelling from start to finish. Plot devices galore, characters going against type, a total lack of logic at times, poor scripting. After some reflection, I've come to my own conclusion that the pros do not outweigh the cons. Some films, you can forgive them their sins. This is not one of those films.
Having said that, I hope they learned their lesson from this. Rogue One may or may not be a fluke, but the score is tied at 1 - 1 right now and I'm hoping they keep up their momentum.
Rogue One is the more average one for me, saved by its last act (the Vader part was pure fan service but as I'm a fan I enjoyed it a lot, even though it actually makes him look a bit thick). My lasting opinion on Force Awakens will inevitably be decided based on how good The Last Jedi is (and 9 after it).
Yeah I'm on the side of this. It's weird, I agree TFA was a remake and I agree R1 was well done, but all in all I actually think I preferred TFA. I think @RedSky said it best, out of everything since 6, it just feels the most Star Wars and as such just works with the world the best.
Found R1 to be a decent film that you watch once to just not have that stupid "how did they blow up the death star" plot hole.
Not a movie I'll likely ever watch again, as opposed to if I go through the star wars series from the prequels and to the new trilogy. But still glad it came out as it was kind of needed.

Saw on facebook today from a friend that the movie title in Portuguese is plural. "The Last Jedis".
Rogue One is incredibly boring for people who aren't obsessed with Star Wars fwiw. It's not a good pseudo war film in its own right. The plot is cookie cutter, and essentially a two hour excercise in explaining a plot hole from a 30 year old SciFi kids film very seriously, and the characters are all incredibly one note, with the sole exception of the robot, who is the only character whose death registers any feeling.
Sure, the endings okay in a "Hey remember Star Wars? Look! Star Wars!" kind of way, but shorn of that context, and treated like a normal film with a coherent self contained story would be, it's just kinda 'meh', if not outright confusing.
But it's got Star Wars stuff in it, and is kind of grown up and serious (but not really) so people get to pretend Star Wars is grown up and serious or something.

Which is strange because so much was made of it being the first 'stand alone' film. Except it can't do that. It relies heavily on the films around it to even make sense.

Meh. Music isn't very good. Was excellent in the first trailer. The Force Awakens trailers were all very good with excellent music. This trailer is rather rubbish.

Bit of a spoilerific trailer. It may be intentionally misleading because you can certainly try and piece together bits of the plot.

Looks as paint by numbers as you'd expect a star wars film to look and if the theory above is correct confirms that they seem intent on stealth remaking the entire original trilogy.
with that in mind then perhaps Ren and Rey switch sides.
Won't even bother with this since the two previous installations were totally devoid of charm, something which Star Wars relies heavily on.

I liked it... A great reason to continue your Star Wars fettish is having kids.. Any reason to go to the movies and see all things childish!
Agreed. The stories and characters just aren't as loveable as the originals. As someone else said it's as paint by the numbers as possible
