Gaming Star Citizen, F**KING WOWZERS

Yeah, well, No Man's Sky looked impressive in the promotional videos. I refuse to get carried away.

My PC is never going to be able to run that anyway.

It's like a super detailed X3 (which in itself was pretty damn deep) so I'd quite like to play it.

This does look incredible from a technical point of view. The whole experience from lifting off, traveling through space to landing on a planet is complete seamless. That's pretty astonishing. Whether that will translate to a good, and more importantly, bug-free game is another matter.

It's impressive from am immersion standpoint, but after the 3rd time you have to get out of your seat, walk to the back of your spaceship, wait for it to land, open the door, step out...I'd be fine if hitting X stuck me on the planet ;)

Yeah I've been following this since it was announced on kick starter, game looks more amazing with every module added.

Shows what you can achieve when you're not bogged down by the limitations of consoles (and are sitting on a pyramid of crowd funded money).

I downloaded the game a few weeks ago when it was on free play for a week - it was nowhere near playable, just a mess.

cheers.

The single player campaign is going to be released quite soon under the name squadron 42, right (at least in theory) ? Are you going to be able to buy one without the other?

No it's a single game. The squadron 42 single player campaign is part of the overall universe. A bit like story lines in MMORPG, you know? And the release will also be just Alpha/Beta at first, which you can of course play if you pledge towards the game, the final release date I'm pretty sure is still years of. I'm not holding my breath that this game will be finished before late 2018 tbh.

Edit: I have to correct myself.

Seems indeed as if they plan to release the Squadron 42 separately even before the entire game is done. Interesting. So yeah seems like you can just get Squadron 42 on it's own.

I have to admit I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to all the pledges as I have pledged back in 2012 and didn't follow what other options there are right now all to closely.

Not even sure if I'm eligible with my pledge for S42? Need to check that when I'm back home.

Its still in alpha stages so no where near optimised, which means anyone who doesn't have a NASA grade supercomputer isn't going to run it without issue.

How big a supercomputer is going to be needed for this?

They've been building it and asking for more money and more money and more money and more money for like 5 years. I got bored of waiting a long time ago, I doubt it'll ever release in the state it was originally talked about.

Having tried it in the free play week, my view is the same. It has all the signs of being an absolute litigation-fuelled disaster, and too-few of being a great game.

The disease of crowd funded game development. Rare are the examples of games coming out of it as an unqualified success. Developers acquire massive budgets, countless times more than their original funding goal, and subsequently start freewheeling. The result is usually endless delays, a work in progress looking phenomenal but the end product, if it ever arrives, being a disjointed mess of half-finished features. Not saying this has no chance of avoiding that fate, but game development in recent years has made me sceptical. Guarding scope is becoming an ever bigger issue it seems. Sometimes you need a publisher to draw a line somewhere, even if the gaming community usually hates them for it.

How was the actual game like?

I've been hearing about this game and its thousand dollar ships, endless delays, broken promises and changing Terms Of Service but was genuinely impressed at what they showed in Gamescon.

Is there a game under that great graphics and lofty ambitions?

So, was having a debate with a friend who invested in this. Any chance of this ever coming out? His zealot like fervour when I raised my doubts kinda took me aback.

Any Star Citizens on the caf? It looks pretty cool..

I've been keeping an eye on it... And yeah, you have to ask, why would they release it? They're making bucket loads of cash selling tiny bits of an unfinished game for hundreds of pounds - I'd be in no rush to release either.

That said, doubtless it's not going to be a 50 quid buy whenever it does "release" - it'll be a subscription based ongoing thing, which I actually don't have much interest in. Which is a shame, because it looks great.

The scope is staggering. It kind of feels like they're trying to make a game that has everything straight away while other games would release the first version which has limited functionality and then perfect it in game 2. Think of Assassin Creed 1 compared to 2. I'm not sure if its admirable or plain stupid.

I certainly wouldn't invest in the game though, seems like the type of game that when you start dumping money into it you'd never stop.

I really, really wanted a space-sim, but common sense dictated I just buy Elite: Dangerous instead & wait for SC to actually release. Can't believe it's been 2+ years since I bought that HOTAS setup, hoping SC would be out soon after

I gave up on elite probably a bit more than a year ago - became a bit samey and grindy - star citizen does look like a step up in terms of visuals - imagine it would be pretty awesome on an oculus rift

Oh same, I gave it up pretty fast as well. It was fun with this thing, though!

(I sent it back in the 14 day period in which I got bored of Elite )

It suffers from absolutely ridiculous feature creep. To the extent that, as many have said, it's really looking doubtful if they ever intend to actually release anything, or they're just going to move the goalposts again and again.

you went warthog... I went X56

both good bits of kit and in fairness i cant imagine playing the game without it... could be a bit fiddly when using the oculus as well though but after a while you know most things by touch

Sadly, I never owned both at the same time. By the time I got the Oculus, the Warthog was long gone.

It is a game that I think is helped by the immersion - but after the initial wow and a Wow factor at the scale of the game it soon starts to feel a bit empty and samey

I agree entirely. There's a limit to how much Euro Truck Simulator: Space Edition you can stomach.

indeed and even the pew pew fight bits get a bit repetative - plus the honk and jump exploration is at best basic - that said they have recently improved some of this and the game has come a long way since launch - but i just got fed up
