Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has kick-started a summer overhaul of his squad by telling ten first-team players they are up for sale.
Villas-Boas is desperate to restructure his squad during the transfer window ahead of a push for Champions League football next season.
And with the club still hopeful Gareth Bale will stay put, Spurs are looking to raise funds by flogging several players who are on the fringes of life at White Hart Lane.
Villas-Boas has already chopped the likes of William Gallas, David Bentley and John Bostock after their contracts expired, but ten others have now been told they can depart.
They include strikers Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, along with the likes of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Iago Falque, Andros Townsend, Beniot Assou-Ekotto, Bongani Khumalo and goalkeepers Heurelho Gomes and Brad Friedel.
All of those will be available for transfer if the price is right, while it’s also thought that Villas-Boas will use them as negotiating chips if needed.
There has already been plenty of interest in the players, with Huddlestone and Townsend wanted by Fulham, while Inter Milan are keen on defender Assou-Ekotto.
Blackburn are keen on luring 42-year-old Friedel back to Ewood Park, but are unwilling to offer a fee at present.
Spurs will use the cash to fund targets that include Internacional’s Leandro Damiao, QPR’s Loic Remy and Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin.

I remember Iago being really hyped up when he was at Barca and then when he made the move to Juventus. A few muppets were keen to spend the cash on him.

i'd take huddlestone for a small fee. there's a decent footballer in there somewhere.

Defoe will still be there I'm August. He always survives any transfer rumours.

It sort of depends on if they are going to lose Bale. If they do then they will have a ton of money to spend on their entire team.

Surprised Townsend is on there. Would be a decent back-up winger for them if Bale stays.

Defoe and Abebayor? Wouldn't that leave them with just Damiao and Remy as their strikers? Surely keep Defoe as back-up, at least.

Unfortunetly its sounded by a cumbersome slow frame. Technically always stood out, even when he was 16 with Derby. I reckon he'd suit Italian Football v well. Not what we need at all.

i'd just make him run all summer and see what happens.

They can also play Dempsey up strike, which is what they have done a bit this season and I think I also saw them use Holtby quite high up the pitch. I think they should have at least 3 good strikers if they want to even stand a chance of getting the 4th champions league spot. If they get someone like Benteke in addition to Damiao and Remy, they would look in better shape.

Huddlestone is technically superb, but physically appalling. He has one of the best passing ranges in the league, right foot, left foot- long and short. Should score more though.

Underneath the four stone of Doritos and Mars bars, you mean?

yeah. we could send him and anderson to fat camp. and if that fails we could just force them into pay per view eat offs and get our money back that way.

so basically i've come up with an idea in a niche market that would make millions.

I can't see them getting a fee for most of those. Some of them won't leave because they won't get the wages elsewhere.

That just reminds me of a monty python sketch. "And finally, monsieur, a wafer-thin mint."

who honestly wouldn't pay to see anderson and huddlestone gorge themselves to the brink of extinction? i'd bring andy gray back to commentate and he'd be all "you could-a put three waiters there trying ta take away tha rack of lamb and huddleston wounldnee-a let hum"

Defoe, Adebayor, Assou-Ekotto, Huddlestone, Parker and Friedel clocked up 176 appearances between themselves.

Defoe was the 5th highest on the appearance list for the whole squad. Too much change can be a bad thing and they'd be losing quite a chunk of their squad. Especially since they're in the EL again.

If Ambrosini signs for West Ham I can't see them pushing through a deal for Parker

I remember an article a while back suggesting that Levy was planning on letting a whole lot of players go to trim the wage-bill so that they can offer Bale £170,000pw to keep him. I thought it was rubbish at the time.
Sounds like they're going a bit too far. Suppose Bale gets injured. They can't be putting all their eggs in one basket.

Spurs aren't in the EL this season are they?

Surprised they want to get rid of Defoe given he was pretty much their main striker last year, and even if they do get a top striker, he's an extremely useful player to have on the bench. With Adebayor going as well they're certainly gambling on the strike force by getting rid of someone who pretty much gurantees them goals every year. A good signing to be had there for an Everton type team.

If Levy is really trying to keep Bale by selling some of those players, he better make sure they find some able replacements. It is very hard to turn down Madrid even though players are aware going there can potentially stunt their career. Madrid is one of those clubs you tell your grandkids about if you've ever had the privilege of playing or managing there. Doesn't matter if your time wasn't great, just being involved with Madrid is viewed as a grand once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Weighing all those odds with Levy supposedly trying to keep Bale by trimming the wage bill when the footballing world knows he will leave soon just seems a bit odd.

Khumalo, Gomes, Falque can all leave without any kind of replacement. As well as one of Huddlestone or Parker (though I think Livermore is more likely to be moved on before either of them).

I'd be very surprised to hear that we were trying to sell Townsend.

Don't really see the point in selling Friedel either.

And as furious as I and I'm sure AVB is with both Defoe and Adebayor, I don't think we can afford to sell them both. Too much of a risk.

That article looks like it could have been lifted straight from Goal.com.

Even more so now that he no longer manages a football team.

I am surprised. I am sure they can do with Huddlestone and Defoe in their team.

Also wouldn't it affect their home grown quota with these many English players leaving?
