Spurs 2022-2023 thread | Bentancur out for the rest of the season

I will do that when you stop judging a team after 10 minutes.
You really aren’t getting it.

I tuned in excited to watch some football. After 10 mins I remembered how boring they are to watch. I watched every single minute of the game and wasn’t excited watching any of it. It was a dull 4-1 win. My point still stands. I find spurs boring to watch under Conte.

Yet you come along like an unripened mango and completely make up a statement that I called them “shit” when in the very same thread I said talked about how they’ve improved.

You called the forum weird. What makes it weird is when turnips come along and attribute something to another member which they clearly didn’t say.

That's just saving face after jumping the gun that early to push up your agenda against Conte. You couldn't wait for at least 45 minutes to tell us your judgement, no, let's post immediately once they went down after 12th minute, then try to act like I didn't make a fool of myself when they ended up winning 4-1. A "dull 4-1 win" .

Saving face as I said.

Clearly avoid the question for the 4th time. You’re foolish to think they can win the title.

Except I'm not the poster who said that. It was another one.

I just came here to point how some of you can't wait to push your agendas against certain managers for the slightest drop of form even if it was the early minutes of the first game in the season. Could have waited till they actually lose but should you ?

Dejan Kulucheski is an incredible player. Seeing him in the flesh is a real eye opener. He is some player.
If he played for Liverpool everyone would be melting over him!

Kane, Son, Kulusevski is an insane attack. Saw that stat on MOTD that, since Kulusevski signed, they are the top three attackers for goal involvements in the Premier League. Mental that one team has all of them. Think they have a better chance of competing than originally thought.

They’ve got Sessegnon and Perisic. Any idea why they’ve just signed another left back?

If Udogie is really good its a smart move to buy a guy for 20m who could cost 40m next summer. Given that Perisic signed a 2-year-deal and Udogie is only 19, I could see him being loaned for multiple years.

One of the interesting dynamics with Spurs right now is that Conte is a notoriously short term manager but they're doing medium-to-long term squad building around his tactics and preferred 3-4-3 formation. For example, Udogie and Spence both have been mainly wingbacks, not fullbacks, at senior level. Sessegnon and Doherty (who matters less because he is old) are also wingbacks and not fullbacks. And they now have four DMs with Hojberg, Bentancur, Bissouma, and Winks. A lot of modern managers, especially those more oriented toward possession, would not have more than one of those players on the field at a time. It could be just the inducement Conte needs to stay longer. But if he leaves in the next couple years, its going to limit how they approach a replacement quite a bit.

Perisic unlikely starter for long. Sessegnon development into starter is never guaranteed with a injury record like that.

It's a good point. It could make Conte stay longer. However, if he doesn't, you wouldn't be surprised if they targeted Graham Potter as his replacement, another known for using a 3 at the back formation to good effect.

As for Spurs chances, I'm looking forward to seeing Chelsea vs Spurs this weekend, a fixture Spurs tend to struggle in. It's going to be a good indication of where they are.

Nobody will judge how good spurs are when they play at Stamford bridge. However they will be very good this season but still we will see off easily the mighty spurs challenge at bridge. That's my opinion.

Im not saying it will be a defining moment for them if they lose. However, if they were to win at a ground that they struggle in, it would be a massive confidence booster for them, and help gain them early season momentum & belief. And you really don't want a Conte team getting on that crest of a wave.

He is a very clever player, knows when to pass/dribble/shoot. All of this despite not having the typical speed PL fans crave for when it comes to wingers.

Kulusevski, fantastic player! …surely Conte won‘t sacrifice him for Richarlison?

He won't - mainly because Richarlison is likely to be the main rotation player for Son and Kane (we are trying to sign Zaniolo as Kulusevski's rotation player apparently) - he will start from the bench on Sunday and will probably make his debut at some point in the second half.

I think they will be the third most consistent team from the top 4 and have a incredible offensive threat. My favorite for third place.

I agree but that's what makes it even more bizarre from the perspective of Richy. You saw at Everton how angry he was when we subbed him off, can't imagine he will be happy being the second choice at Spurs even with CL football.

He is going to get a ton of games over the course of the season. It is up to him to put the work in now and prove that he can get into the side. He was the big fish at Everton but now he is in a much bigger pond.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left within two years if one of the starting trio from the weekend doesn't leave.

I think we're hopefully going to move to a situation where we have 4 genuine starters for 3 spots. Not 3 clear starters and then bench players with a huge drop in quality.

I think Richarlison will start a lot of games this season, with injuries, fatigue, rotation, world cup etc.

Like I said, he is going to get plenty of game time, it is up to him to make himself undroppable. Son can have a run of games when his form dips - this happens every year. The difference now is that we can replace him with quality rather than have nobody good enough to give him a break which is what has happened up until now. If anything this will make Son even better because he finally has proper competition for that position.

Yes, I think that makes sense from your perspective. I think from his it's difficult, but we will see in the next few games what happens. I think for me it's especially because it is a World Cup year. Jesus has gone to Arsenal and is their undisputed starter as a CF, along with people like Martinelli starting at LF etc. Richy wants to be the starter for Brazil and arguably has a bigger love story with them than any club he's going to play for. Yes he will be rotated into the side but I think he would want to play as many games as possible to be the undisputed started for Brazil. @balaks see above. Time will tell!

Can you see Conte playing all four at the same time? …if so, how?

Richarlison will know all this better than any of us. He chose to come here so he clearly believes this is a good move for his career.

No I can't. Do City play Silva, Foden, KDB, Grealish, Haaland, Mahrez and Alvarez every game? No they don't because they have a very strong squad and they can rotate without a drop in quality. This is what we are building at Spurs. If we want to be a big club we need to act like it. As I said, from what I am hearing we are looking to bring in another player to be rotation for Kulusevski as well. The aim is to have a very strong bench to give Conte options when he needs to change things. We have never really had strength in depth before and it's always been one of our main weaknesses. Not any more.

All makes sense and I get what you're saying. Hopefully for him (and us) he gets enough games to keep him happy!

Very interested to see if Spurs can get something v Chelsea.

For me, Tottenham haven't improved their best XI this summer. Squad depth yes. A better best XI no

I've quoted you in here rather than the general thread because it's a good point.

I agree with you when it comes to the two big signings, but I'm not sure about the others. I haven't seen much of Perisic as a WB, I like Spence a lot but he's definitely a project, and in theory Lenglet should absolutely be an improvement on Ben Davies. I will say Ben Davies has been great under Conte though.

I think improving the 11 came around in January when Bentancur and Kulusevski joined. They've both had an immediate impact and significantly boosted the quality of this Spurs side. This summer the plan to target depth was a pretty shrewd one imo, with added CL football they now have a situation where they have enough quality in depth where they can consistently rotate without taking much of a hit. Or if they had an injury to a forward or a midfielder, they're able to compensate for this without sacrificing much in the way of quality. We saw how a couple of injuries to Chelsea and Arsenal last season in which the squaddies weren't of a high enough level massively impacted their season. Tottenham are approaching a situation in which they have strong replacements in almost every position and enough positional variety that he could be quite flexible with lineups, it's been good squad building.

The other factor outside of dealing with injuries and fatigue, is the tactical flexibility they've gained with their acquisitions. Focusing on the big two, Richarlison can play anywhere in the forward line, making him perfect cover to come in at a high level. His work rate and physicality makes him pretty flexible and you can play him with a number of different partners. A very different player to the others but also very easily able to play in tandem with them. Bissouma is the same, very well rounded and capable of playing with either Bentancur or Hojbjerg, and in certain situations you could play all three. His ability to provide all over the pitch suits Conte, and the fact that he can transition defense into attack quickly is another big boon.

If you combine January and this summer it's been really good work from Tottenham. Conte deserves a lot of credit too for the improvements he's got out of some of the Spurs players, especially defensively, some of them look like brand new players.

Very overrated team. They'll be in a battle for top 4 just like season.

Every team is bar Liverpool and City. They're the only guarantees.

Agreed. I’m just seeing a lot of talk of them being the almost guaranteed 3rd. Neville talks about them being the only team that can challenge the top 2. Very over the top stuff.

Yeah I can't imagine them challenging at all. I think they've done their business smartly, and Conte is great, but I can't see that at all. Getting top four will be tough enough as it is.
