Souness at it again…

Sourness will never change. Fairplay for swimming the Channel. Older members will remember who was the first man to swim the channel (or should that be person?) as it was on match boxes. Captain Webb his name was, he died trying to swim across the river just downstream of Niagra Falls. So who was the second man (person)? Nobody ever remembers the second in anything, just like football trebles:cool:. BTW, SAF donated £20k to the charity Sourness was swimming for.

At least Carragher had the mental capacity to admit he got it wrong about Martinez. Souness is just looking increasingly senile every time he opens his mouth to talk about football.
He also said you want more from a CDM than what Rice gives you, Well Casemeiro had 14 goal involvements in 45 games so basically 1:3 from a CDM, never saw Souness with a no look assist, Casemeiro is the best CDM in the world that’s why FIFPRO voted him in, Souness hates United

Has he ever spoken about himself as a footballer?
He seems to hate/think very little of quite a bunch of players, United-related mostly but not always.

Do you reckon he thinks he himself was all that?

His playing days were before my time. People tend to speak of him highly though.

He also, in fairness to him, Speaks highly of Bryan Robson. In fairness, my own personal bias aside, how could he not?

Simple math says Germany (population 83 million) produces 15 quality players for every 1 player that Scotland (population 5.5 million) produces. So a whole squad plus 4 subs... yeah.

(And I'm no Grimm Sourness fan... he's not talking rocket science here.)

He kept saying he didn’t know how good Germany where as Scotland where so bad. He just couldn’t give credit to Germany who literally ripped them apart.

Scotland were not bad they are just bad overall and them qualifying was a great achievement and a peak Mcsauce in qualifying but still Germany made them look even worse

It’s cheap to use that excuse once you’ve gotten to the tournament. Everyone knows that Germany is a bigger country. Analyze what went wrong on the pitch rather than throw out simple demographics.

By his logic China and India should be absolutely pile driving all these Euro 2024 sides.

Football is the national sport of Germany and the national sport of Scotland is hating England so there is less focus on developing good football teams. Plus more people in Scotland go into England hating than they do football as it's more fun and has a lower bar to entry.

That's a brilliant explanation. And probably the reason why we like the Scots so much here, who desperately try to make clear with their whole attitude that they are not English

Duncan goodhew? I may be wrong of course.

They don't need attitude, all they need are their skirts, which no self-respecting Englishman would be seen dead in :D

It's sad really. When you think of the great Scottish players down the decades, you have to wonder why there is such a dearth of talent coming down from north of the border. The great English sides all had a cadre of Scots in the team and, of course, our two greatest managers came from there.

We need a ‘What’s Great aboot Scotland’ thread. Wooly headed cows. Their whiskey is easier to drink than Irish. They excel at throwing massive poles around

Denmark European Champions 1992 - Population size, ooooooh, lookie, Greeeeeeaham. The same as Scotland. What a bellend .....
It's also misleading for Scotland anyway. They don't just have their own population to pick from, but also anyone in England who has a Scottish parent or grandparent - like Gunn, McTominay, Adams, Cooper...

No proper investment at grassroots unfortunately. Sounds obvious or basic but fundamentally a lot comes down to that. Pitches are bloody expensive and a lot of parents can't afford to send their kids for football training on expensive pitches or with teams. The FA are hated up here, they should be adopting what the Dutch / Icelandic / Baltic countries FAs have done and look to invest, but hey ho :(

It's a crying shame. I grew up watching players like Law, Bremner. Crerand, Baxter, Lorimer, and, of course, the great Celtic side of 1967. Don't kids organize their own games any more, or has everything been regulated down the length of the grass on the pitch?

Aye it really is. And I’m not exaggerating, I barely see kids just kicking a ball around between themselves, like with jumpers for goalposts. But yeah over regulation is definitely a factor, where they aren’t allowed ‘ball games’ in a lot of spaces and no access to the pitches unless they or their parents pay, which is a fortune. A bloody joke really.

Do you genuinely not believe that population has an effect on sporting performance? Note - it has to be the number actually playing the sport (playing population), not the general population of a country.

Playing population and money are the biggest predictors of sporting success

Would need to see the proper stats of football players in each country then we'd have more to work with.
But there would be many other factors too.
