When you find 40Gb models on the shelves. Certain retailers are probably selling the 60Gb at a much lower cost already.

In Europe backwards compatibility is not done only by software. All units made (for all markets worldwide) since the European launch have had the same compatibility.

for the Irish posters here, particularly those in Dublin, Game Stop are running an offer of a second hand PS3, 60GB for €349, 1 pad no games. However i happen to know (and i have bought one) that a company on O'Connell Street gave all of their employees a PS3 as a bonus. Most of those people duly went up the street and traded them in to Game Stop, many of them unopened, others which have been used maybe once or twice. I went in yesterday morning, and bought one. Every part was still in the sealed protective platic bags, and i have to say, i'm well thrilled with it.

We can see that they have removed some air vents (two USB ports as well, but that's by the by), which would suggest that they have reduced the size of the main components inside. They generate less heat and require less cooling and power.

Yes. It means it should also be more reliable than before, but PS3 has been very reliable from day 1. It was actually over engineered in a way.

So in theory the 40GB is probably the better option, especially for men as I probably wont need the extra 20GB as I wont be downloading stuff. And the 2 extra USB ports won't efect me.
You can always stick a new HDD in any time you want in any case. 2.5" laptop drives are not exactly expensive any more.

I thought about buying a 360 but with the PS3 price drop I will probably get a PS3 instead. Too many friends have experienced the famous red rings of death with their Xbox 360 consoles.
It seems a good move when I bought the PS3 at launch now. I will still have the card readers, bigger hd and the USB ports, not to mention backward compatibility compared to the 40GB version.
HMV and Game have now updated their prices.
Both are £349.99 for 60gb PS3 with your choice of two titles out of Heavenly sword, resistance, F1 and Motorstorm. They have got rid of the free second controller and HDMI cable (internet only) offer that was part of the £424.99
According to these sites the £299 40gb version is console only without any bundled games

i'd say get the 60gb, if your only paying that much more for it. i got the 60gb one on friday and am very pleased with it.

It’s from someone who job it is too basically to search round and compare their price, promotions ect with other retailers and apparently this seems to be the best deals going about.
