Solskjaer target 5 signings; 6 players could leave [BBC, Telegraph, Guardian]

When does this iritating thing called football finally end and we can start our transfer window ?!

We done Chelsea a favour taking that pair of plodders off their hands

Yes, because Chelsea fans would much rather have Bakayoko, Jorginho and Drinkwater than Matic LMFAO. ANd Mata has been a good servant to the club. You don't last as long as he has if he wasn't. Don't forget, he was their player of the year two years running when we signed him and he was loved by Cheslea supporters. Not sure why so many people here seem to have a beef with him.

Outside of maybe 3 goals he scored, Mata hasn't really won us many games. He's too slow and is too easily pushed off the ball.
And Jones, Valencia and young to name a few have lasted too long at our club.
That's a big issue for us. Keeping shite.

Seems to be one of our passions.

I think that a bigger issue for us is that a lot of our supporters think that we need to have a squad of 22 players and all of them need to be world class. The season is long, and it's squad players like these guys that make a club successful on all fronts. Where would we have been without the "John O'Shea's" and "Phil Neville's" of the past???

no mate, its when these lads aren't bona fide starters for our club.

The difference being 40 odd million.
We gave youth a chance with both those players so perfect squad players for us.
We should have just cashed in on Mata and spent wisely, although the latter was unlikely to happen anytime in the last 5 years.

I think there are some cold hard truths people can't grasp on the caf it seems:

- Sanchez isn't going anywhere
- We're not getting Sancho or CHO
- It is very likely De Gea leaves next summer for free, Herrera leaves this summer for free

- Jones, Matic, Young will get plenty of game time next season
- players leaving are Darmian, Mata, Herrera, Rojo

I also wouldn't be surprised if we don't buy a CB - Smalling, Lindelof, Jones and Bailly will be our set of defenders.

Real questions are what RW have Ole and the board identified instead of Sancho/CHO and what two midfielders are we getting.

All very sensible and constructive. Would suggest we need two CBs but there we go.

Interesting Pogba not among the possible 'outs'.

I think he'll need to stay another year. Too much building needed on RM side to part with a large sum for him. Also, we're also moving a lot of players so will need him around. I feel (unfortunately) he's leaving and we'll spend time planning for his replacement (or re-think our midfield from scratch) from this summer onwards.

We're trying to manage headlines.

Would rather the club be managed better.

I won't believe it unless if Ole says it. This is Woodward's briefing all over again.

Also, Why did We sign Lee Grant again?

SAF? I thought he spoke really positively about the Glazers, every chance he got.

In any case, this kind of briefing is a signal of intent, it's not to pacify shareholders until the window shuts. It's painfully obvious that we're far from competing for serious titles. However, this public signal of intent can of course backfire drastically like it has many a time before under Woodward's leadership.
That's just it. If you were truly just going about your business trying to get us actually better in the footballing sides of things you wouldn't be out in the media making absolutely wildly unrealistic claims about transfer targets. Not a single one of those targets mentioned in this thread will actually sign for us. Our signings over the past 10 years mostly have been the plan b/c/d signings that we got our hands on because we couldn't really get our main signings. I think Pogba, sanchez and Martial have been the ONLY signings that were legitimately 'plan A'.

CHO, Sancho, Koulibaly and Varane???
Ffs  Ed sure knows how to keep the money flowing with optimism. He doesn't really care about our football. Why should he?

Real concern is even the last point looks doubtful considering how our board seems reluctant in investing properly. We need the Arabs to buy and invest into us, otherwise our current board would just be happy collecting our money into their wallets. All while we are still stuck with Smallling/Jones/Lingard as automatic starter...

Obviously Man Utd needs a RB to replace Valencia, a CM to replace Herrera, and a right winger to replace Mata for your first team. The rest depends on the future of Sanchez, Pogba, and De Gea. I doubt Ole will do an over haul of the team as it normally won't end well. Toby Alderweireld is a steal at 25M but unless Baily is leaving it doesn't make sense. In my opinion you need a Santi Cazorla kind of player in the midfield to form a double pivot with Pogba, with Matic as DM for a inverted triangle. Someone like Cazorla who can keep the ball in tight space, has a tremendous range of passing, and can play from deep to control the tempo of the game. Arsenal went downhill since he got injured. He created 8 chances against Barcelona the other day.

I've heard this before for several windows, and up until now i've bought it as a valid arguement. Now i'm wandering - what great fecking balance do we have right now that will be disturbed?

I am sorry for using the wrong words. What i actually meant there was "bedding in period" if you have 6-7 players in bedding in period. That will only result in disjointed performances. That is the last thing a manager, team and new players want to face at starting of the season. The bigger a club is, more difficult it makes the things for manager, players and team.

Think most on here are savvy enough to understand how modern football works in that it's not easy to get some players while it isn't difficult, if the desire is there, to get others.

True, that Sancho or CHO are unlikely to be signed but apart from posters being optimistic, I don't see an expectancy to sign these players.

We all know that Valencia,Mata,Rojo are likely to leave but it's hardly a surprise. I can't see Bailly here but when w need 4 CBs why dispense with all of them? Is that how it works?

I think it's a bit naive to know exactly who the coaches have identified but ridiculous to imply that they have no idea! I'm sure you'll be the first to know who they've identified, check your inbox daily for an update from Utd!

I think we will have a much happier fan base If we accept where we actually are at. Solskjaer can’t exactly rebuild mid season and while he’s improved a fair bit we’ve seen many games where we look as bad as we have in the last 5 years.

The reality of where we are it is that we are probably a worse team than wolves. That’s not to say we don’t have better players or should obviously be aiming for the top next year but we’ve played wolves three times this season.they outplayed us in all of them and we didn’t beat them once. They are a team with a clear identity and set up, that we are naturally higher than in the table due to our resources. We get wins on some off days for the same reasons, they, less so. But I truly do believe they are further along as a team than us. We are the embodiment of three failed managers and failed styles and stagnation and there is a big rebuild needed. These managers have actually left us with good parts but absolutely no whole unit.

We have seen what happens with the likes of Chelsea when you put everything on short term success. Win the league one season, sack the manager the next. We can’t go for this approach any more. Solskjaer has inherited 6 years of a stagnant, poorly managed football club and there is serious concern from me that this will change under Woodward. Ole himself might not live up to the job but if were backing him we need to back him to rebuild a squad with identity and future planning, ie a good balance so as players like Matic age out, there will be good replacements to step in. I’d expect to see us compete at the top again soon, but If it’s at the expense of rebuilding a stable club I’d sooner see us steadily improve. While klopp has won nothing at pool for example, it’s clear he has made them a better outfit equipped to deal with loss of coutinho and recognise good targets and keep improving. This happens at a different pace for every club.

I like the names being mentioned, I like the idea of a core team built around the likes of dalot shaw lindelof Pogba martial rashford lukaku Sancho rice niguez. I for one am going to sit back and enjoy backing solskjaer to get it right whateve happens with the rest of this disappointing season.

For what it’s worth , and I don’t dislike many of these players but I think the following could be freshened up and said goodbye to without sentiment: rojo, mata, Valencia, darmian. If herrera de gea and Pogba are going to not commit or are likely to unsettle us next year again, then they too unfortunately must go. I’d also sell Sanchez ASAP but that might be tricky. We have so much work to do it’s unreal, every time I imagine one area being solved I realise another area is worse off or will be soon.

No we are not. This is as worse as the other guy saying we are at Everton level. They are very good counter attacking side and their style of play suits playing vs stronger teams with all the space to counter attack. They are not better than us.

I mean currently Wolves are a better organised team, with an identity, style of play and are seemingly getting the best out of their squad. Not sure you can say that's true of us most of the time.

As a team we probably are. Forget Ole, over the recent years, as a collective, I actually we're one of the absolute worst teams around when you consider the players and resources and even managerial quality at disposal.

There's a reason people constantly want 10 players sold. It's not because our players are that bad (although we have made poor buys). It's because the team has been mismanaged and as a collective is weaker than the sum of its parts rather than being stronger.

It will be crucial to check a signings mentality above his abilities. Feels like we are stuck with a bunch of apathic journeymen.

I like Rice in that sense because he seems to have apparent steele in him, in the same mould Keane had.

We have been crying out for a natural leader for long. It's a joke people suggest the likes of De Gea who rather save his pretty face over a goal.

The most important 'out' is Sánchez. He's a time bomb on those wages.

How do we get rid though? Do we need to subsidize a move somewhere else?

You can make argument that we are the worst top 6 team, yes that might be true considering how different managers we hired and all the mess but Wolves? This is the team that lost twice to relegated Huddersfield, so does that make Huddersfield better than Wolves (as that's the sort of logic the OP used). They are very good team against strong teams as they defend deep and with numbers and have lot of pace in the team to counter. But as a whole, they aren't better team than ManUtd.

Against bottom 5, they played 9 games and lost 5, won 3, drew 1. They are good vs strong teams and average against rest.

We need big chances, there is no doubt about it but the changes are needed to catch up City and other top teams.

They are the sine qua non of such identitarian counter attacking flushness. But there's no one else apart from them, City, Liverpool, Burnley (?), who have a personality so fixed in the public mind. I'd just like it if we got the best out of our squad and added to that.

Can't wait for the season to end.

One so the Jose period can be fully behind us.

Two so I can see if Ed and the Glazer's do sufficient business. If not might have to curtail the amount of thought and time I put into worrying about United.

Show the fans some ambition for the amount of support they give.

Excited to see Ole build his squad but the question is will he be allowed to.

All fans give support. United fans aren't unique in that sense.

Also, both LVG and Mourinho were backed and allowed to build their squads so why wouldn't Ole?

Never said he won't be just said it remains to be seen.

I'd argue our away support sets us apart from most. Also, as a fanbase in terms of match going fans Ed and the Glazer's have gotten off lightly for leading the club to 6 seasons of mediocrity post Fergie with their poor planning.

Also, when you consider who has been given new contacts this season and previous season Ed comes into serious questioning. Young Jones Rojo Mata and signing Matic are all things that could have been prevented with a director of football or someone with a footballing brain.

Ed is at fault as he seems to continue to want to be apart of footballing matters when he has proven time after time to be a let down it that regard.

Should stick to the sponsorships and delegate recruitment role to someone else.

Dont disagree with any of that. Wish we'd have already gotten in a DoF.

Given Ole is a fan and has been interim manager for a few months, I imagine he's clear on the additions he'd like.

I'm sending that to Private Eye for an entry into 'Pseud's Corner,' It's brilliant:lol:

Hopefully. We sure do need a lot of them. Without a doubt in terms of incomings our biggest summer perhaps ever needed. This isn't one of those summer we can get away with 2 or 3 first team signings.

We will need 4,5,6 depending on if Herrera or anyone else decent goes.

Say we come our of this summer window with a CB and a RW. No matter who we get we will be shagged. Would be a guaranteed fight for top 4 again.

Then the question becomes how many years can we stay just fighting for top 4, cause it has been 6 now.

Usual dick swinging time by Woodward which ultimately will not result in the big talk matching his actions.

I remember last summer after beating City at the Etihad and finishing 2nd, I felt we could somehow bridge the gap only for him to get us Fred, Green and Dalot(wtf)...and then name drop Varane.

If we get 2 players from that purpoted list of transfer targets, I woule be mightily surprised. I am not buying Woodward's empty talk this time.

Sancho
CHO
Neves
Wan Bissaka
Koulibaly

If we get this, we'll challenge for the title next season.

If they really want us to get back to the top - I'm pretty sure they will realise we need more than 2 players mate.

Apologies is my post came off as patronising, it's just a bit tiresome to scroll through number of posts talking about Sancho as a done deal almost.. Please read the last few pages of this thread, it seems like people genuinely expect us to sign 250-300 million pounds worth of talent.

5 players in, would be, in today’s market £300m. If we’re talking, straight into the starting line up, make a difference signings.

We have good players, but whilst they’ll be squad players, at the top clubs, they’re regular starters for Manchester United.

We have the financial means, does the board, actually have the appetite to spend the kind of money needed, not only to compete for the title but to be comfortably top 4.

We see the need for getting a RB in. We’re still talking about, replacing Valencia, an ageing 30 something winger, who has been our RB for years, that’s where a lot of our problems stem from.

We’ve replaced a 33yo winger playing right back, with a 33yo winger, who was playing left back.

Playing players, out of position seems to be our forte.

The years from SAF, have been a complete mess, on and off the field. We’ve fallen behind.

It’ll take more than one summer transfer window. I fear we’ll be saying the same things next summer, as we have been in the previous summers.

I won't believe it unless if Ole says it. This is Woodward's briefing all over again.

Also, Why did We sign Lee Grant again?

Lee Grant is just a third choice backup to let Periera and Henderson gain experience. It's a very sensible signing.
