He has 1 year left on his contract, according to transfermarkt. That's why he's relatively cheap. He also isn't from a prolific football country that produces top flight players regularly. For players from those type of countries, it can take time for them to get their big move.
He has excelled for Morocco NT which overachieved a lot in the recent WC. He has done well for Fiorentina who had a decent season. His metrics are really good. I'm not sure where the strong criticism of this move is coming from.
The same reasons i would say. Not from a prolific country that gives the idea that he is a great player. He is a seen as DM and the DM position isnt the most exciting position to sign a player for. He isnt coming from a top tier club and he is fairly cheap. He also isnt young or expected to have potential to develop in a world class player like we hope Hojlund will do. Also we have Casemiro so the defensive midfielder isnt a position that people cry out for.
All in all, its not a super exciting signing. Could turn out to be a good, smart and usefull signing but it just isnt an exciting signing and therefor easy to voice some criticism over. People on RedCaf generally love to moan about things and criticise actions of the club.
Funnily enough I originally typed "manager and scouts" but then deleted "and scouts" because they have done such a poor job in recent years. That's another area Ten Hag needs to address. Generally speaking though I am encouraged by the kinds of players Ten Hag seems keen on moving out/in and I desperately hope it's going to lead to higher quality play as he shapes the squad more to his liking.
I still reckon he might be starting over Casemiro.

That L'Équipe report is written by Loïc Tanzi, and he's incredibly reliable in general (Tier 1). With that said, the article itself doesn't have much substance to it.
L'Équipe themselves have exaggerated a bit in their Tweet. Al-Ahli are definitely interested, but that's all the article mentions. They don't mention any talks from the club. The only statement of substance is the fact that Sofyan Amrabat has yet to make a decision on his future even though Pedullà (Tier 3) reported that he prefers to join us.
I think that's likely to be the case here. The only thing mentioned in the article is Al-Ahli's mere interest. If they were to make a move, then the other reliable journalists would have already reported this.

I don't know that works because Deco and Carvalho were at FC Porto, which is an established upper crust club with a good track record at developing players they scouted & that squad specifically just won a C3 and C1 back to back IIRC.
Drogba moreso, spent a lot of time in Le Mans before quickly ascending through Guingamp to Olympique Marseille where he has a big season even losing a C3 final there just like Fiorentina did last year (UEFA Cup was arguably a tad more relevant then).
No dig at OM or Fio there, they're legacy big clubs in their respective leagues but Porto has a track record as a common step towards joining a top club afterwards.
Overall I agree with you but it is perhaps true that it is rarer today for a good prospect to not be enrolled early by clubs making up the pyramid leading to the top.
That said... Feyenoord is not a nothing club, neither is Club Brugge. That Hellas loan coincides with the club doing a good campaign in their first season back in Serie A. Reportedly -though transfer rumours are what they are- Sporting CP were interested in 2018 and FC Napoli in 2020.
At the rumoured level of fees (30m£) expected it's a good gamble for a player known to be an hard worker.

My Juventus supporting brother-in-law who despises United more than any club in the world and is a huge WUM reckons Amrabat is at best League One quality and will be a massive failure (he thinks the same of Hojlund and Onana). This is really encouraging as it basically means he's going to be great.

Casemiro, Bruno, Mount, Amrabat, McTominay, Eriksen. That's a good midfield in terms of quality and depth. But we'll see with the links of Moyes wanting to sign McTominay for WHU.
Does he realise that by calling these Italian league players as league one quality, he is demeaning his own league?
i think amrabat is more like a moussa dembee for spurs. doesnt score goals, doesnt shield but keeps tempo, shape tight

I genuinely think it's because of me. We get along well otherwise but he has this tendency to hate everything that you like, if you like a game or a movie then he'll almost without exception say that he found the same game/movie absolutely terrible. Hence I reckon the minute he found out I'm a United support he decided that he hates us. He doesn't admit it and says he's always hated United but I don't truly believe that.
There were literally 2 cases last season where I found out we conceded because he was so fast to text me 'hahaha United' on WhatsApp that my 5-6 seconds delay on a stream did not catch up.
