I think they detected some minor injury during the medical. So it's more precautionary than anything else. A bit like Ramus. Allowing the body to heal properly.

That's why I don't get him being allowed by the club to go out on international duty and aggravate

I think if there is a slight injury, not debilitating but precautionary; you need to go there to get yourself checked out by the NT doctor before getting the sick note. Not unheard of.

Interesting quote regarding him being able to play fullback or wingback too.

I wonder if at any point we'll see ETH use him the way Arteta used Partey at the start of the season, as the nominal full back who inverts into midfield alongside the DM.

Maybe we could see something like that tried when Kobbie is fit again but probably not

I would be surprised, he doesn't have the speed for playing in the sides. Though I rember him playing right back once in the U23 NT of Morocco in a friendly against Italy.

I think that works best when your other FB is decent playing at CB, giving you a solid 3-2 shape in the buildup. Shaw would work for that, but of course he's injured, and I don't see anyone else filling that role til he's back.

 good point

Yeah worrying when these sorts of leaks start coming out.

If true.
It gives a bit of a picture of the fight ETH is having.
Because I am willing to bet Amrabat or a midfielder of his profile is someone he would have wanted in during preseason and certainly before the season kicked off

That, and ETH quote below suggests he's already in trouble here.

The imbeciles in the recruitment team seem like imbeciles who have no clue what the club should be doing.

Yep. We’re 5 matches into the season and nowhere near having our strongest squad available. Add in injuries and off the field issues, and we’ll be lucky to have everyone available before we’re 10 matches into the season. It’s a shambles.

I assume by "recruitment team" they actually mean the scouts? Because the scouting department had serious reservations about Antony last summer as well, and it's clear they have no real power when it comes to approving or vetoing transfer targets, hence the complaints going nowhere. That is, assuming the information in this Muppetiers tweet is actually true.

Does that mean we won't exercise the buy option if EtH gets the sack before the end of the season?
Is it an option or an obligation? I've seen both mentioned in different articles. Up until now I thought it was a purchase obligation, basically making this a fake loan for FFP purposes.

I’m amazed we have a recruitment team still to be honest, should bin the lot like that scene in Moneyball, make the head scout some kid that collects Adrenalyn XL cards.

Playing devil's advocate here, but some of Ten Hag's signings have been questionable. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some reservations on the board's part.

That being said, if they weren't convinced by Ambrabat then they should have suggested an alternative considering it was clearly a position that we needed to strengthen in. Other than Amrabat, I can't recall us being linked to many CDMs?

Rice, Caicedo, Onana and later in the window Forfana

Club also preferred to keep DDG than sign Onana in goal

I really hope whoever takes over the club (assuming it gets done) fecking fires everyone within that staff top down and cleans house because it's rotten to the core.

He hasn’t exactly proved himself with his signings so far.

Everyone's going to have duds. A good transfer record is only usually separated by 1 or 2 players working out vs not. I'd say Ten Hag have been largely good, though transfers aren't determined from a few games or even 1 season. And generally even a 50% record is pretty decent and what I'd say would be the target norm. Above that and you are on a good run.

Imo, based on what I've seen and what I'm predicting, I'm guessing something like this as a hit/mid/miss for our transfers:
  • Eriksen - mid (free but super short term)
  • Martinez - hit
  • Malacia - mid (good squad player at low fee but unlikely ever starter)
  • Casemiro - mid (age, probable decline... probably would need 3 top years for it to be hit at that price)
  • Antony - miss, even if he plays again (gotta be a top player at that price)
  • Sabitzer - miss (but loan so whatever)
  • Weghorst - miss (but loan so whatever)
  • Onana - hit
  • Mount - mid (unsure long term position but he's a good player and good age profile relative to the midfield group... but why not just wait a year?)
  • Hojlund - hit
  • Amrabat - hit
  • Reguillon - mid (loan so whatever)
  • Altay - mid (backup GK who cares)
What is killing us is the Sancho and Antony level flops. Spent huge money on what should've been superstar signings, or we spent superstar money on what ended up being average players. I'm not unhappy at his transfer record since he joined, the fees can be lower but we're going after the right type of players in positions we desperately need. Mount is the only one who I guess was bought without a clear idea (and frustratingly, had 1 year left... just wait it out). I do like him and think he'll provide a lot, but no idea what the plan is in a scenario where all are fit and available. It's a lot of money for "part of the squad", amrabat fits better for balance, and he got #7 which certainly doesn't indicate just part of the squad. But he's not benching Bruno. Here's hoping he can learn to play on the right for our needs?

So here is what you're left with if we stick to the real world and take into account "predictions" that look more like whishful thinking. 1 hit, 3 mid, 4 miss.

I'm sure EtH would have loved one of those players, but the funds were never going to be available.

I imagine it was Amrabat or nobody, and the club pushed for nobody as that was cheaper.

Who were are better players last season? Willing to bet his signings were up there

ETH wanted Amrabat and another. He wanted rid of McTominay Fred and VDB.
The club did not want to sign Amrabat clearly and tried to sell McTominay to get someone else instead but they could not get it done

How can you say Onana ,Hojlund, and Amrabat are hits? two havent even played yet, and Onana is very much a mid so far.

It's an expression. 60 minutes of football isn't enough for any kind of conclusion. (Except for young Ronaldo's debut)

Odd expression, I would have gone with barely played as your original comment suggests you didn't watch our last two league games and being pedantic it is more like 90 minutes across the two appearances. That said, I agree with your premise, calling anyone a hit after less than a full season is kind of premature.

If this one doesn’t work out, too bad to even imagine.

The problem is if it does it further strengthens ETHs hand against a club led recruitment strategy

Nonsense. The only thing that strengthens his hand against a club led recruitment strategy, as you put it, is the club not having a club led recruitment strategy.

We don’t… clearly
It is clearly some weird hybrid and there is clearly a power struggle between the 2.
We all know the club wanted to keep DDG

That's fine. If he doesn't succeed, we don't have to sign him. And even a DM on loan who proves not to really be good enough is better than no DM. Which is what we had before, Casemiro aside. This is the sort of low-risk purchase where you can absolutely go with the manager's opinion without concern.

Also, our recruitment team thought Pau Torres was a better option than Martinez. And while I like Pau Torres, that absolutely isn't a swap I'd make for our team now.

You added a miss, it's just 3. But 2 of them are emergency loans when there was no other option, so again, it's whatever and not an indication of anything.

If you read my post, it's a prediction of what I think those guys will be classed at...

I've also got 0 doubts about Onana, he's a top class goalkeeper.

It low key feels like the season (and potentially ten Hag's job) is riding on Amrabat being a hit, which is a little crazy to say about a loan signing. But if he is, it just lightens the load everywhere, and stuff like Eriksen looks better in hindsight as well, as we're able to use him as a true rotation/bench option rather than the de facto starter because he's the only mid we have capable of passing. Same kinda goes for Hojlund, can't afford another expensive duff at the best of times, let alone when he's our only option. No pressure!
