So Who should Partner Van Nistelrooi?

Ole should partner Rudd -- he has proven himself time and time again as a top quality striker.

agreed. what does he have to do to be considered first choice

Get a transfer.

We need a new striker. Ole should partner RVN, but we need someone who can be our bench striker. We need two, we've got Forlan. Yorke shouldn't be counted. We should get someone who is quite cheap 8-12m, save the rest for defence. Rebrov might not be a bad idea, nor is Angel. Both have not been very brilliant in England, but have the talent which we might be able to bring out. Other options -
1.John Carew - cheap, not prolific, but useful all the same.
2. Hasan Sas - good value for money indeed. This guy is strong and has skill. Can backup Giggs as well.
3. Julius Aghahowa - If we do get him for 12m, it will be a great buy. This guy has the potential to be as good as Henry.
4. Andy van der Meyde - This guy is good in midfield and can play withdrawn striker if needed.
5. Malcolm Christie - Nippy and strong, should be quite cheap from Division One.
6. Mikael Forsell - Fast and good skill. Sitting on the bench at Utd. maybe better than doing the same at Chelsea.
7. Paolo di Canio - the man with all the flair in the world.
8. Roberto Baggio - hasn't got a chance with the Azzuri now, he may as well leave Italy. He did quite well last season, but he is 36.
9. Jermaine Defoe - Everybody knows about him.

None of the strikers you mentioned are strong Utd quality strikers. Cisse and Ronaldinhio are.

I agree about Ronaldinho, I don't think we quite grasp what he could do for us.

World Class as:

-Rotation striker
-Support in "The (MU famous) Hole"
-Backup for Giggs and Beckham
-Fantastic "turn the game around" tactical option

The way things are going with Rio, I'm warming to the idea of getting Ronaldinho and Ayala for the same money. The only argument for his price being sky-rocketing is him being the English backbone for years to come. Well, let's get the backbone for 20m next Summer then.

I doubt we would get both Ronnie Gaucho AND Duff. Given our need to backup the strikers and have a different option to RVN-OGS I'd go for Ronaldinho as Duff is not proven up front.

I would probably go for Ronnie G, Ayala and a left fullback now, preferably (though doubtful)Chivu. Rio, Recber and maybe Duff (depending on how Veron does) next Summer.

I think it would go down to what happens with Veron over the season and when Keano might retire but just think of building up this for the future:

---------------Recber
----Gaz-----Rio-----Ayala----Chivu
--Duff-----Beckham---Butt------Giggs
---------Ronaldinho---RVN

Thats a fantastic lineup. Incredible.

This will do perfectly for me:

------------------- Barthez ----------------------

-- G Nev ----- Rio -------- Blanc --- Silvestre --

-- Beckham ---- Keane ----- Verón ------- Giggs --

-------------- RVN --------- Solskjaer --------------

That's fine with me for First Team 2002-2003, definitely. I'm just worried about squad overall. Bar the solid CB, we are not in need of first team players but backup so that our standards don't fall apart when one is missing (e.g. PN or Scholes playing on the RW! ). That used to be one of the main things we had. Injuries aside, whenever anyone was having a stinker or a tactical switch was needed we could turn to Johnsen, Irwin, Butt, OGS, Teddy... Now they are either gone or starting (except Butt, as long as Keane is around).

That's why I wouldn't mind giving up on Rio for the time being and getting a 3-year solution (Ayala) + Ronaldinho as rotating backup and (in my dreams Ajax would sell) Chivu (particularly with no cover on the left and uncertain about Silvestre - we would get our heads chopped off next Summer if we had no viable LB!). That would be a painful 40-45m but well worth it.

Then as Blanc retires and Leeds have had a miserable year we can get Rio for the long term. If Rustu is available on a free I'd go for it even if Barthez is doing fine, he is the right age -for a GK- and top class. That would be 20-25m. Duff would be an option if Veron didn't work.

I'm thinking more long term United here, I don't mean we have to buy all those guys now!

Duff and Rio are certainly the best buys for long-term.

I think what Man Utd needs now is a young striker, besides Forlan.

We need a Cantona/Sheringham style player to Partner Ruud. And they are few available. Face it guys we never really recovered from Teddy's departure. With him went alot of our penalty box creativity and presence. Unless we got a Ronaldinho, Duff or a Rivaldo we are done for. 3 strikers are not enough especially when the first choice ones are similar in style. Lack of variety means lack of victory

I agree. 'cept Ronaldinho would cost a lot tho' he would be nice at OT.
