So who realistically will be the new striker?

It is pretty obvios it will be someone on the cheap or a free transfer. So who is available? Please dont say Duff, Kenyon has ruled out that sort of money.

It could well be one of the Lazio Argie clan with them still not paying up the Stam money.

i thought juan valeron would've been a good buy as he plays in "the hole" behind the striker (RVN).depor are also looking to offload 8 players due to financial problems.

according to from the terrace .com ( that ever reliable source crespo is the man

"United are, of course, still owed some £10.5 million by the Roman giants for the sale of Jaap Stam last year.

By way of compensation, Lazio are touting two Argentina internationals to Sir Alex Ferguson. Striker Claudio Lopez hasn't settled in at the Roman club since his move from Valencia two years ago and wing-back Juan Pablo Sorin has been playing his club football in South America despite signing for the Italians last year.

However, Ferguson has made it clear that only £30 million-rated Crespo will do. The United gaffer wants one more quality striker at Old Trafford before the start of the new season and as negotiations continue today with Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti, United officials are accepting no substitutes.

The player's agent flew into London earlier this week and is in England again today to negotiate his client's personal demands with United. "

Though the tabloids are saying Gudjohnsen is on his way, not sure whether either of them would be ideal and personally think either Di Canio or an out and out speed merchant would be better for us.

hmm but i doubt Lazio will sell Crespo... i mean how much can Man Utd pay. i'm sure they'll not break the 10 million limit.

perhaps Djordic will be the final jigsaw. he's set to set the Premiership on blaze.

Wow! Are you allowed to such an insightfully original thought - steady on!

If it's an extra dimension SAF is after he could be the man.

Good post :)

the only reason i can see fergie going for crespo, is that he has played with veron at lazio and Argentina, he is instiinctive (probably) at anticipating veron's out of the blue world class passes.

sometimes last season veron would do the unbeleivable pass, but giggs and co were not on the same wavelength.

also crespo is an argie, with forlan and veron that can be good for either.

Realistically speaking it should be DUFF. <-- full stop.

Realistically, there is "no way" the PLC will allow SAF to spend more than 6-10 mill. on another forward. So realistically, "forget Duff!" and possibly "forget Crespo!" (unless there is a miracle and either can be bought for less than 10 mill.)

From Official Site:

United have been linked with just about every striker in Europe, and Paolo Di Canio's name re-entered the rumour-mill this week.

But Ferguson insists Di Canio is no longer a transfer target. 'No' was the answer when Sir Alex was questioned on the proposed Di Canio move.

Fairly Self-explanitory that one.

That's a bit of a downer. I was under the impression getting Yorke out quickly for cheap was for the purpose of bringing in PDC.

Wouldn't Crespo's wages surely be too high?

What would we be prepared to pay on top of the 10,5m downpayment we've made?

Those are the questions.

If we can answer them positively I'd love to see him at OT.

I really can't see Kenyon speanding much more to be honest. I think Fergie must have managed to convince him we need a striker, because he's been very 'public' with it all. I'd say an additional £5m, tops... then you have to consider the Irwin-replacement, either way, we're gonna have to turn to the youths for one of the positions at least

We may get lucky if they are in enough financial trouble that they need him off the payroll and will take a cut price fee. It doesn't fit in with Kenyon's statement though to fork out another 10m or so.

If we get the Stam money then I could see us laying it all out for a striker though after what Ferguson has said. I'd be happy with Gudjonsson, but unconvinced about Gomes. He's got something for sure but he hasn't shown much in the last two years.

but kenyon said we wont be buying anyone else and then fergie says we are looking for 1 or 2 more players

lazio aint in as much trouble as they want people to think they just want to hold out on paying us,just look on what they have spent in the summer

crespo would love to play for us and link up with his best mate veron

would you settle for gomes as a squad player?

cuz i would, hes free and barring his poor spell in italy hes been a good player and only 25

Rich yes but then that does not neccesary means have to keep on spending! Look at the market at this moment..

And he doesn't own the club let alone the team

70k a week for a fourth striker? Are we going bonkers here?

I would think Kenyon expects a lighter payroll, not the opposite.

I don't really see a point in us getting any Lazio player except the quite possible scenario of Lazio refusing to pay yet offering to discount it from a larger fee (they need cash!). So we can count with the money if we buy an expensive player we don't need or forget about it for a while. Cnuts!

Everyone seems to think that Utd will have more cash to spend on a striker next season. Hence, the need for a cheap (old or up and coming) player this season.

But Utd have only spashed £15 million this season and committed £14 million next season for Rio. If the right players are available then I'm sure Utd will go for them. They received £23 million this seson from Nike and will recieve another £23 million next season. This is without even touching this season's profits (approx £50 million). They can comfortably afford Rio and an other player that Fergie may wish to pursue.

The Kenyon thing is a smoke screen to dampen down expectations. Everyone knows Utd are cash rich. All the others are struggling financially.

Could be Crespo (makes sense with the Stam mess)imo.

CISSE EYES ENGLAND AND L`OM
AUXERRE sensation Djibril Cisse has expressed a desire to play in England or for French giants Marseille.

The highly-rated hit-man had some taste of World Cup action in the Far East, and has many admirers in The Premiership, headed by Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier.

Cisse denied, however, that he had travelled with his brother Abou to meet Houllier in May to discuss a transfer, before the Merseysiders agreed to sign Senegal striker El Hadji Diouf.

At 21, the powerful French international is happy to continue banging in the goals in Le Championnat for another season, but he has ambitions beyond his homeland.

"The English league is my preferred one," he told France Football.

"There they play a quite direct game, with space, and that suits me well.

"The Premier League suits my style.

"I see my future in England, even if I have no true desire to leave.

"Honestly, I am not in a hurry at all to leave Auxerre.

"My priority is to make a good job here, where I would like to play at least one season before the end of my career.

"Marseille is a club where I would like to play at least one season before the end of my career, but later as I still have a lot of time.

"I came from there, it is my area," said the Arles-born ace.

As for the rumours concerning the talks with Houllier at Anfield, Cisse was adamant this was not the case.

"That's false!" he blasted. "I only went once to Liverpool - with the Under-15s and I visited the facilities.

"Liverpool is a good club, but they are not alone."

that last quote gives us releif that its not all liverpool

buy crespo on the cheap and swap him for ronaldo or ronaldhino.

Who just yesterday (Sunday) said he has no intention whatsoever of playing in England, Italy or Spain? No way.

Lazio is offering us Crespo for free this season +we wipe out the debt and then next summer we start to pay in installmentsSounds too good to turn down..

19-year-old strike-sensation Matty Williams is fast making a name for himself in United's reserves after notching his seventh goal in just three games in a 4-0 win over Barrow.

If the Crespo deal [no money down and pay in installments] is for real? its a no brainer - Veron's mate! and world class.

Then blood one of the young guns as the fifth striker. Other websites [newsnow.com] are comparing Utd's strikers to Arse, Poo and Leeds who each have 5 strikers.

I say, Add Crespo and give Williams, Webber, Muirhead, Nardielo, Djordic and Davis a run as the fifth striker, surely one of them can cut it? they are Utd players after all! ;)

I doubt the PLC will want a huge salary to pay without the incoming finances the CL affords them.

I can't believe I'm contemplating United not making it to the group stage as I have no doubt we will, but, I suppose the PLC have to be ready for any eventuality.

Gudjohnsen "Flattered By Sunderland Interest" (August 8th, 2002)
Any chance of a Sunderland move for Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen seems to have been killed off, after the Icelandic striker decided to stay at Chelsea.

Sunderland had been linked for the £12m-rated former Bolton striker, but his agent, who had been trying to get Gudjohnsen a pay rise at Stamford Bridge, has said that Eidur is going nowhere.

Gudjohnsen's agent, Peter Harrison, said today: Obviously we're aware of Sunderland's interest and he's flattered by that. They are such a big club.

"Although they haven't had the best of times lately, they've done fairly well since they got back into the Premiership. But Eidur is happy at Chelsea."

that's him out of the way, crespo and lopez were denied by cragnotti (crespo did kinda hint though), duff is hinting at staying, but it's all gone quiet on the ronaldhino front.

maybe he's our man
