A Galaxy far far away....
As much as i'd hate to admit it but Keano has probably got 1 possibly 2 seasons at the max, left at utd. Who is the natural successor as captain and midfield ROCK?

Obviously there are a few that come to mind, (Beckham, Veron) but they are not of the Keano mould.

Do we need to buy someone, like we did with Keane before Robbo and Eric (and to a lesser extent Paul Ince left) retired or do we wait til he's called it a day?

Personally, I think someone like David Dunn or Kevin Nolan maybe worth investing in......your valued thoughts, chaps and chics!

As far as I know Beckham and Veron are both good captains for their countries. If you are capable of captaining big football nations like England or Argentina; you can surely be captain of a club
even if the club is one of the biggest in the world.
But Keano will be an excellent captain for at least 3-4 years. So there is no need to discuss this topic today imo.

....RE: midfield ROCK, i would say that BUTT is a fantastic ROCK however he may not be able to add to the attact as well as KEANE

RE: CAPTAIN ... I would say its gotta be one of the youth team lads ... becks, giggs, gaz or butty IMO.

Great player, but not as influencal and charismatic as good old Keano :(

I can't see him lasting 3/4 yrs with the problems with injuries he's had the last 2/3 seasons and this season.....but I'm more than willing to be proved wrong

Well Id say he's got atleast another 3 years at the top so theres no immediate worry, Id like to see Joe Cole join us as the long term replacement for Keano, people know all about his attacking side but everytime I watch him he gets stuck in aswell and he could turn out like Keano has.
Thats obviously assuming we don't buy Vieira or Davids

Or what about argentian ynungster D'Alessandro? I haven't seen him play, but I've heard that he is pretty good, and have great potetiel! I say buy while he's rather cheap...

Ryan Giggs in the centre? get stuffed.

I Think we should put Nicky Butt in there

Get stuffed yourself Rage. Nicky Butt may play in the center, but Giggs is Captain whenever Keano is away and that was half of the question.

You never know, he might retire at 30 like Cantona did

How do you work that out exactly? He's only 30!

Yeah, and then we've got one hell of a great centre back for a few years without paying for one!

Hear Hear!
And I think that in O'Shea and Tate we have a potential Pally/ Brucie combination for the future,
and that young Dubliner McDermot looks a class act .
Of course one never knows how they will develop but they are excellent at their present level. Brown for me will make a Gazza replacement.

Michael Stewart.

He was easily the best player on the park when he came on for Scotland V Nigeria on wednesday.

His passing was good, great vision and drive, he looked on this performance to have it all.

Talk of Davids replacing a retiring Keane is futile, as they are pretty much the same age, even giggs is only two years younger than keane, and is far more injury prone. For a long term replacement in the same mould, I would go for someone like Hargreaves, he reminds me of keane when he was 21, and i think hargreaves has the quality to lead from center midfield. It also takes some balls to go to FC Bayern and play in a midfield of effenberg and jeremies as a 20 yearold english kid

Firstly, which do you want to find: the next captain? Or the successor to Keano's DM position in the team? There is big difference between them.

Ok, I assume you want to find the next captain. After reading the posts above, I have some comments:

1. We all know Keano is very professional and physically very fit. There is no reason why he cannot play for another 3 years at least.
2. It's difficult for Giggs to be his successor. A minor reason is that he is not very influencial on the pitch (he can play well himself, but can he make his teammates play well also?). And the major reason is that Giggs probably won't have too many years in top form left because it's difficult for a player rely largely on pace to maintain at top form after 30.
3. Butt is an excellent squad member and we all like him. But, face it, he is not good enough to start in every match for us.
4. Wallwork, Stewart, Vieira, Gerrard...
5. Veron -- will he still be with us when Keano retire?

Beckham is the obvious choice and his influence when wearing the captain armband of England is everyone to see. Can't understand why no one mention his name.

There is no need to mention it. If keano is still captain for 3-4 years and beckham is still at the club then I`m almost 100% shure what he will be keanos successor.

Here here.....I think he needs to learn to read the game more from a defensive point of view. I don't know if he will ever be the "heart on my sleave" kind of player Keane is but those things don't necessarily need to go hand in hand (a rock and captain).

I think Hargreaves would be a quality player to have in the team but I'd like to see more of Stewart. I think he's got great potential.

Keano at the back is very tempting but while he's fit and able it's difficult to see him playing there....

apparently, the only player that can come close the Keanes performance and skill is Petit.
I wouldn't really agree with this myself but this has appeared a few times on web sites.

and Keano is much better than Petit. The only player really come close to be as good as Keano is Vieira.

the thing about keano is that you can tell he feels responsible for the whole team; only giggsy seems as responsible as the skipper. we shouldn't even contemplate bringing in an outsider to run the show such as viera cos we know these guys have too much ego.

move giggsy to centre midfield alongside scolesy and you never know, fortune or chadwick could hold out for a season on the left flank. the good thing is that silvestre is really coming on as left back and would make the left wing's job easier..

What complete nonsence

Keane is the only player of his ilk in world football today,he is a unique footballer who will only be recognised for what he is ,in the future. He is the most multi faceted player in the world today,ie he defends like Baresi, holds and dictates like Beckenbaur, attacks like Davids-yes he is that good.It makes me laugh to hear so called experts go on about other players and ignoring Keane. He is the major reason Utd have dominated domestically since he became captain, and unfortunatly,I believe the club will find it impossible to replace him

There's a similar topic on the transfer talk forum, and two main suggestions are rocking the boat - Barry Ferguson and Colin Healy.

I think Keano is irreplaceable, I can't even imagine a team without him in it, thank god that won't be for another 3 years or so though, and I;m hoping one of the youngsters will come good by then.
By the way, Owen Hargreaves is a Canadian. He may play for England but he is a Canadian. I don't blame him for choosing to play for you though, if I'd had the choice I may have done the same. ;)

Don't want to think about it, but Keane does have at least two seasons in him, and after that I would have to say David Dunn / Michael Carrick would interest me. Depends who is manager when Keane quits imo. Giggs would be next in line for the captaincy btw, followed by Gary or Butt.

Hands down Ryan Giggs, after that hmmmmm......
Ole anyone?????

I think Butt, Becks, Gary, Scholes etc would be put ahead of Ole

 I see no point of even discussing it. Life continued after, Robson, Hughes, Charlie,Cantona and Stam.

Gerrad Lopez of Spain. The lad who used to play for Valencia and is now at Barca though injured. He is the closest thing I have seen to Keane anywhere on Earth. And if you want experience. 27 year old Jens Jeremies.
