i had already started “following” them by then but what really sparked things for me we’re the games against Juventus in 1996/97 group stage. We lost both. But the red shirts, Cantona with his collar up, Schmeichel, Old Trafford. We only had domestic TV at that point so Champions League on ITV was some of the only live football we got. It was magic. That season did it for me. Watching BBC Sportsnight when we got knocked out the cup at Wimbledon but Schmeichel scored a bicycle kick that was disallowed oh memories.

a) When did you start supporting United?Somewhere around 2000ish. Oddly enough I wasn’t a Manchester United fan even when I saw the ‘99 CL final. I was young. And in the States, Arsenal and Madrid were on tele much more often. Even though they were great to watch I was always more sweet on United. I was a new wave kid. Smiths, Joy Division and so on. And I think that put the hook in me to dive more into the club’s history and all that. Once I did it became an obsession.

I believe he played a few league games after, definitely his last CL game for us though.

Unbelievable game, from Ronaldo's hat trick to Becks heroics coming on, still my favorite match ever almost twenty years later.
 
My uncle worked (and still works) for Boeing, a major aerospace company. Rolls Royce makes part of their plane engines, so he would go over to the UK frequently. After a trip in the summer of 1999 he brought back a Manchester United encyclopedia, freshly updated to include the Treble success. As a kid in Washington state without a local team (the Sounders were a minor league team at the time), I gravitated towards United's success and read that encyclopedia cover to cover - my favorite name was Nobby Stiles.

Saw them play for the first time in 2003 when they came to play Celtic in Seattle - I got to be on the pitch that day and shag balls during shooting practice. Have seen them a few times since during their US summer tours, and try to watch every game possible (even the ones starting at 4:30am my time!).

Tough question, there aren't many that are particularly likeable! It's very early days but I'd suggest Martinez.

I can't really talk of those prior to 96 as I don't think stats and clips would do everyone justice. In terms of ability, it's a toss up between Rooney and Ronaldo. Rooney just takes it for me.

f) Favorite Game? The last 4 minutes at the Nou Camp, 26th May 99. The other 90 were awful!!

g) Favorite Kit? 92 away

2006-2007 team and season, with Saha supported by Rooney and Ronaldo. The first two months were sensational. We were up 4-0 against Fulham in 20 mins or so. We blew them away.

My story is ban-able.
So what made you become a United Fan? - i started watching Leeds when they got into the UCL, i saw them as a young mostly english team that had a really good youth, and i liked Alan Smith because was tenacious. When they went into administration, i knew they would be fecked because of the relegation + financial issues and the need to sell almost the entire squad, so i just followed Alan Smith to United. Never looked back.

In regards to the bolded I've always found football is great in this capacity, it's at its best when shared and bringing people together.
I'm so sorry to hear about your father's condition, I think it's great you can still catch games with him and it's lovely that you still get those moments during the footie, even fleetingly.
 
I fell in love with United after the 1999 extra time win against Bayern in the champions league. I remember watching as a kid at my grand moms in Ghana, the whole country supported Bayern because of Samuel Osei Kuffour. That come back was just incredible, couldn't help but be a fan after.

Before the game I like Real Madrid and Ajax, after that game I have supported United only ever since.
 
My brothers were big into football before me but being canadian I stuck to north American sports until I got a job at my local pub. The owner was a united fan and most of the patrons as well. The rest is history.

You started watching United because of Rooney at the 2006 world cup? Interesting! Euro 2004 was the tournament when he was really at it. Rooney was injured for most of the 2006 world cup and then got himself sent off vs Portugal.

I guess it was the send-off drama got me there. I am asian and don't know why always atracted by Britian culture. Feel that there is something in common in Rooney and Andy Murray, don't know why.
