So Brad has gone and the race is on to take his place!

No there aren't, there's a page dedicated to them that MArching posted in a thread, there's tonnes of them. Quite a few of them are only enforced sporadically as well.

Though to be fair they could probably all be condensed into a 'don't be a dick' rule.

RedCafe Rules and Posting Guidelines - RedCafe.net

Well exactly.

Anyone who follows that golden rule will find it bloody difficult to get banned. Come to think of it, you can act like a dick a lot and still not get banned. God knows I have. That's the bottom line here. It's incredibly difficult to get banned. You really need to work at it.

I like Brad. I've always thought he's fundamentally sound bloke, who - for some strange reason - kept on picking stupid and pointless arguments with moderators of a website he posts on. Which was only ever going to end the way it did. The fact it took so long for him to finally get the boot is a reflection of all the positives in his favour, as a person and as a poster. Without these, he would have been deleted years ago and nobody would even remember his name.

If I was still an admin I couldn't give a flying turd of massive rocket shaped proportions if he called me a cnut or not. I don't really take offence at being called a cnut, that's not the issue with him and it never was.

This is one thing I can't get my head around. I can't understand why becaues he called someone with the infract button a cnut he got the infraction, but posters call each other cnuts and all other sorts frequently and it's not really an issue.

I might be wrong on this as well, but wasn't his last infraction for saying 'I miss calling you a cnut :p' or something along those lines? Not actually calling anyone a cnut but joking about the past with a conscious effort to make it look like a joke by including a smiley. I could be imagining that bit though.

It comes across that you can call another poster what you want in the forums, 'you're a dick' 'you're a cnut' 'oh feck off are you stupid' etc when replying to posts but if you do it to an admin, that's when it's frowned upon. I've even seen an admin come into a thread and tell Brad to feck off, but no eyebrows raised. There should really be a solid rule on it.

Yeah, that's fair enough. There's 2 sides to the story with compelling points in each one.

Personally, I'd give him a last chance, a very last one, but put a massive sticky thread up telling him and everyone else that if he causes any grief it's final shutters, end of game, gone, finished, dead as a dodo. Nobody can then, when he quite inevitably can't control himself, say diddle shit about why he's gone.

That would be my course of action too.

I think in the past whenever he's been banned he always knew he'd be back on at some point so had no real incentive to change. This time is different though, it has been made permanent and he now knows what he will be missing and therefore I'd hope he can come back and contribute in a way as not to piss anyone off. If he fecks up that chance, then fair enough, no arguements from me or anyone else I would imagine, I'd even shut the door behind him myself.

I would think it might have been the manner and context of insults and not particularly the words.

Internet insults shouldn't really bother people, apart from lowering your view of the person doing it. It's not really hurtful, well not to me in any case. GB and I have been through it big style, even in pictures, it just shows the people that do it in the light of the immature dicks that they are rather than causing true offence.

I didn't have an issue with Brad. He was a good football poster, but disrupting the moderation of the site by challenging the mods, insulting them etc will always get a poster banned with zero chance of returning. The mods have been discussing Brad's situation at great length for many months leading up to his ban. He had already had two or three other final chances, so there will be no way for him to come back.

Not exactly Weaste. We can no longer separate our real and cyber lives. Just as threatening someone over the net can land a person in jail, so too can insulting someone offend. But that's beyond the point. Brad's situation wasn't just about insults, but specifically about disrupting the moderation of the site by sucking up all of the oxygen with his antics. The insults merely served to punctuate our decision.

Brad was ever so fond of calling Wibble a cnut until Marcos told him on 26th June 2010 that if he did it again he was going to ban him for it....

So, brad went down this route...

I miss calling you a cnut Wibble
A couple of years ago I called Wibble a cnut. I guess I can be expecting a ban sometime next week eh
Call Wibble a cnut, that always sets the mood

Hilarious I'm sure you'll admit....... if you're 6 like.

Personally I infract anyone I see getting into personal abuse anywhere but the general. Its against the rules and is counter productive to reasoned debate... Someone does a bit of research to back up their point and is countered by being called an arsehole... I dont think so.

I remember Brad getting banned and warned when I used to post and visit the caf more regularly. Was a decent poster, just seemed to take himself a bit too seriously. Less time spent on caf is something we all need, it certainly helped me and I hope it does Brad as well. Knowing him though, he'll probably try to become a mod on another forum, and if he doesn't, well, then God help the mods/admins on that forum for the next few years. Unless of course they're not nearly as patient as those on the caf.

How modest of Mockney to include himself in a list of irreplaceables.

It wasn't a list of irreplaceables, far from it, it was a list of people who don't post on here as much (or at all) as they used to, for various reasons, but with a profile high enough for 'The Caf" to notice or know why......It's also fairly obvious by the very line that precedes it: "you'll find new", that I don't consider them irreplaceable.

It's nothing to do with irreplacibility, or indeed them even being good (I don't even know pert, or consider him an amazing poster from what I've seen, so certainly wouldn't include him on a list of 'irreplaceables' if I was to do one) so you (and others) have just inserted that assumption, and then used it to paint me the way you want to,..

Nice of you all to turn a whole page in this thread into a presumed discussion about what an arrogant pretentious cnut I am though.....I'm flattered.

Should the forum give a platform to racists, bigots, bullies; If it's only a wall of words? As I said I'm sure the mods will take context into consideration when discussing these matters.

Because it's the fecking internet and things shouldn't be taken seriously!

This is always thrown in mods faces as if we're the only ones taking "the internet" seriously. Well guess what? We actually DO have to take moderating seriously these days or Niall would be closed down by Google alone. Who do you think pays for all the overheads?

Just to weigh things up, what suffering was brought upon Wibble from being called a cnut on an Internet forum?

Why not ask what Brad was getting out of it?

What was he trying to achieve? He'd already been asked to stop doing it, as he would have been had be been doing it to anyone, so why not just quit it if you know its achieving nothing than causing trouble?

You would have to ask GB if he was really insulted by what they did. It didn't really bother me apart from they didn't go directly at me.

I dont now on reflection but at the time some of it was close to the bone. Some of the stuff they posted about your son for example was way over the line (imho). Its why certain posters will never ever be welcomed back here.

*nothing to do with Brad or the current complaints though

I'm a little baffled as to why, after 5 years on here and a meager 519 posts, you have decided this thread (basically about Brad) is the one for you to post in and have an opinion on?

I'm finding this rather strange to be honest.

I'm rather fond of Brad as a poster is the reason. I'm just trying to understand both sides of the debate.

Yes it was, which is why I took issue with it, it wasn't directed directly at me, it was using a 1 and a half year old boy to produce their "humour". If it was directed at me, I wouldn't really give a shit, I can defend myself and laugh it off. The fact that they chose someone totally defenceless to have a go at is what made them look like total pricks.

To be fair Nome, these days it seems like the only threads you're active in are the Brad ones as well.

I've not really posted much for along time Top, on here or on the other place, after a while internet gimpery takes it's toll, there's only so much gayness a guy can take.

This place used to be fecking hysterical, I think most would agree it really isn't anymore, when you take the laughs away what's left?

But Brad is a friend and I will stick up my friends when I think they have been harshly treated, is that wrong of me?

Just seems a little strange is all.

Not really, he's a poster whose been here as long as us, and seen Brad from start to end, his opinion is as relevant as anyone elses. His lack of posts probably means he's more impartial than most of us too.

Maybe.

I don't really take offence at being called a cnut, that's not the issue with him and it never was. I couldn't care less if he said he was going to rape my son, because it's A) highly unlikely that he could actually get into the position to do so, and B) it would be a death wish if he ever tried it, however yes, it's going over the top, but hey. The issue with him was always him sticking his fecking oar into places it didn't belong, and he never did it IMO because he actually cared about the situation, he did it to cause a fuss, to cause hassle, a mass drama, on purpose.

Personally, I'd give him a last chance, a very last one, but put a massive sticky thread up telling him and everyone else that if he causes any grief it's final shutters, end of game, gone, finished, dead as a dodo. I agree with what you're saying Weaste and I can only add that even Brad wouldn't be that big a dick to let everyone that stuck up for him down! Unless the modmins really wind him up by merging him with FeedingSeagulls or something like that...

This is always thrown in mods faces as if we're the only ones taking "the internet" seriously. Well guess what? We actually DO have to take moderating seriously these days or Niall would be closed down by Google alone. Who do you think pays for all the overheads?

I quoted your post before the edit which said it works both ways and I was going to agree with it as it's what I said. I agree with this too, but I think there's no parallel to be drawn on seriousness between something that is affecting ones business and a poxy personal insult!

DCM's and false fecking nines, that's what.

Which other forum on earth would have handled things differently, or better?

It's no surprise we don't ban thousands of posters a day, because they adhere to the few rules we have. Over a period of 5 years, you can learn those rules, especially when you've been given 20+ 'warnings' about them, with instructions to stop. Seriously though, which forum would have dealt with Brad with the amount of patience we did?

I'm sorry, all this treated harshly stuff is nonsense, and doesn't remotely reflect the approach we took over years, not a week, or month, but years, nor the time and effort we put into having an alternative course of action. The actual decision itself was the most democratic thing I've seen on this forum.

This is fecking cringeworthy.
Yes, but it's very interesting too.

I've been reading this thread for the past 15 minutes, abolutely fascinated by this side of the Caf I've never encountered before, being a bog-standard, quick-post-here-and-there-whenever-the-mood-hits-me type of poster.

The evaluation of fellow posters, the self-evaluation, 'the ethos of the Caf'!
An entire meta-Caf subculture, a complex web of relationships and categories (enemies; allies; valuable contributors; the nondescript masses) I never knew existed, and which reminds me of Les Mandarins.

Now I'm going to close this thread and pretend I never read it, otherwise I'll never dare post again.
