It would surely be too big a change for a player of his ilk who plays in a league where the pace is so much slower to come to the premier league and handle it. His reflexes must be slowing ala Scholes, but the latter has the advantage of having always been used to the league.
Likes to stand on the ball too much à la Veron, perfect for European football but I think he'd find it tough to settle here.

We'd need 2 Mascherano's to make him work in the EPL. We don't play with 2 Mascherano's. Barca are the one big team he'd be a hit for.
his legs are utterly shot imo. only would be useful if we wheeled him out for europe. not a chance we'd go for him.
I disagree, his legs have gone and wouldn't fit into their unique style, pressing the ball all over the park to get it back quickly as possible. Like carrick he drops off sits and waits to intercept with clever positioning. Not really his style.

Barca's system is what protects the players. As long as you can pass the ball superbly, you can survive in their side. I have no doubt he'd thrive along side Xavi and co. They'd hunt and he'd mop up. Just like Busquets does.

Thing with free agents is you still have to pay their wages, Pirlo would probably be on £4m+ a year and demand a two-year deal at least. Also, a signing on fee would probably cost £2m to £3m so you are looking at outlay of around £10m to bring him. For that you can have Obertan on a four-year deal or Bebe for two years.

I still refuse that bolded bit. It was all about pace. For anyone playing alongside Keane of those days didn't need to be able to defend.
It matters little. He has never played in a fast paced league. At 31 he'd never adjust in time. He'd suffer the same way Deco and Ballack suffered. Worse because he is way slower than both when they arrived.
Barca is the only big side that he'd fit in seamlessly. For their system protects its players. That's how they play with an almost paceless central defence and suffer no after effects. If I was Guardiola I'd definitely replace Mascherano with him.
