I mean, Sir Alex had Aberdeen ranked as the number one team in Europe at one point in time, that is absolutely incomprehensible. I honestly can't think of a comparison that will come across well because it's that hard to explain how much of an achievement that is.Absolutely not. He took United from a team that had won “only” 7 league titles to the top of the all-time winners list. He almost trebled the league wins and picked up 3 European trophies and a fair few domestic cups along the way.
He also did this by building 4/5 different squads.
Just look at this:
Aberdeen honours before Sir Alex (73 years):
1 League Title
2 League Cups
1 Scottish Cup
Aberdeen honours with Sir Alex (8 years):
3 League Titles
1 League Cup
4 Scottish Cups
1 European Cup Winners Cup
1 European Super Cup
It's just inconceivable that somebody could take charge of a club with almost no winning history at all and do that within an 8 year period. Manchester United were/are a huge club with vast resources available in comparison to most and should be winning leagues, European Cups etc. (I'm not diminishing his achievements at United at all, they are still ridiculous but there is expectation at United that existed to be challenging for these honours based on history). Aberdeen had absolutely no right to be doing what they done.
For what it's worth, I was there today, it was great seeing Sir Alex back up in Aberdeen, you can tell it still holds a special place in his heart. He looked genuinely delighted to be here and to be recognised with the statue.
A little anecdote that some might not know that he shared today. He said he spoke to Dick Donald (Aberdeen Chairman at the time) at the start of 1986 regarding his future plans. Dick Donald told him there was only one club in the world worth leaving what he had in Aberdeen for, Manchester United. He said he didn't know if Dick knew there was interest that early but he made a decision at that time that the only club he would leave for was United. I don't know if there were any approaches that he knocked back during his time at Aberdeen from other clubs but we probably have something to thank Dick Donald for in having that conversation with Sir Alex.
