Silvestre - Contract stuff?

Heard he's got one year left and no contract negos are in progress?

Are both sides not interested?

I think this is probably the position United will be looking to fill next.

I brought this up last week and it seems there's still nothing in the air regarding silvestre's future.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Sir Alex goes for a left-back soon.

I really like Mickey and think he is a dish but maybe we are better off without him if he is going to complain about where he plays.

There are others who would give anything to play in the Manchester United team and these players should be our priority.

Maybe I am being harsh on Mickey as sometimes newspapers recycle old quotations and take them out of context. But when I consider how competitive the Manchester United first team situation is, I cannot understand Mickey`s gripes.

If he wants to leave I will not beg him to stay. We need players with hunger and desire to win medals - not those who put their own hunger of self-fulfilment first.

Mickey could learn a few lessons watching some Roy Keane videos and talking to the High King of football about playing for the team rather than oneself. <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

Weren't we seriously linked with Lizarazu not too long ago? And if so, can anyone confirm that it was at a time when Silvestre was already at the club?

She should, after washing so many of 'em for her man.

Last season and yes Fergie did make a statement that he was interested in lizarazu. Bayern wouldn't sell and the player himself didn't want to move so the whole issue was dropped.

It will be very strange if we go for lizarazu to replace his successor in the national team. I still hope Fergie can persuade Micky to stay. I definitely don't want him to leave because it will be very, very difficult to get a replacement who is as good as him.

I think Lizarazu is too old to consider now. If Mickey keeps insisting that he wants to play CB or leave for a club which lets him do that then its bye-bye.

Anyone got a recent quote from him on how happy he is at United?

Lizarazu's replacement (or cover) in the national side is Candela. Mika's in the squad as a CB - hence his griping - he fears he'll be beaten to the starting XI by Christanval and Gallas

Escude will get a chance before Micky does imo. Saw him the other night and he is a great propspect.

I was just gonna say.

Candela is the best LB out there along with Lizarazu and Carlos. There's a youngster at Lyon called Brechet who might be worth a look in a couple of years. But we need to find someone - Mickey isn't convincing and I don't think SAF will ever play him consistently at CB so I think he'll look to move on soon.

You're right Ichk, it was discussed last week.

But the general feeling was Mickey's staying put. He'll be available for a bosman in six months, I can't see Fergie or the board risking letting him go for nothing, when his value has surely increased since we signed him.

Expect to see him sign a new contract shortly.

You're saying players aren't going anywhere a lot lately Raoul. You have insider info I take it?

Certainly not, but he's a Man Utd player and the burden of your prooving that he's leaving should be on you, not me. Do you have any inside info ?

I'm not giving you any exclusive or conclusive info. My thoughts are exactly that, my thoughts.

Your posts have an air of certainty about them.

I agree with that. Although he improved last season, he has never really convinced. I full back's first job is to defend, and I think Mickey forgets ths sometimes.
I can't see him at CB, and he doesn't seem too happy to be a full back. I think he may well move.

Should I preface everything I say with 'I think'.
'I thought' it would be obvious that it was my opinion that was being put forth. ;)

Perhaps so, but it sounds like you're saying it because you don't agree and you can't be arsed.

I definitely don't agree. He's improved significantly each year he's been with us. There are only a handful of other LBs who could walk in and replace him - and most of them aren't available. He's about to enter the prime of his career. Its the last position on our squad that needs a change imo.

Fair dos. I'd still call him suspect in the LB position defensively but agree there are only 2 or 3 (mentioned above) who would be significantly better than him. I feel he wants to move on though, as someone else mentioned in the thread already, in order to secure his place in the national team at CB and because he seems not to be too impressed about being played at LB - after all he left Inter because he didn't want to play LB.

He and the board better hurry up, it's not a very pleasant sight to see a first team player a little more than six months away from a bosman free.

Blythy does a Raoul ;)

Or do you really have insider info?

However good Micky is going forward he's still our weak link defensively, and his attitude is questionable. I think Alex has being trying to replace him for over a year now, and will manage it this summer with Micky on his way out. If some people are calling Rio Mr. 95% man then Silvestre is Mr. 5% man, he's always blundering, its just his fancy wing play (leaving acres of room behind him to exploit) blind the fact that he's defensively weak. He'd make a better left winger than a defender imo.

First choice left back would be Sorin, with Escude as back up as I think our best youth full back is a right back?? However I recognise that Lazio are reluctant to part with a player who hasn't even played a game for them yet!

Second choice would be Bridge if we can't get Sorin btw, he'd become a really great player if he came to a club like ours - he certainly didn't look out of place at international level and is very comfortable on the ball, as well as being sound defensively.

And what makes you sure that Sorin and Escude, neither of whom have Premiership or Champions League experience could displace Silvestre, who has extensive Prem and CL experience under his belt at this stage.

Silvestre wasn't very experienced when he came here, and he displaced Irwin (too soon imo). Sorin is proven at the highest level in the WC (one of the few argies to have a good WC imo). Escude excelled in the recent U21 tournament and is already better than Phil Neville imo., and looks like becoming a really good player.

Personally I think we need a young LB to replace Denis. I don't think Sorin, Escude, or Bridge could displace Silvestre at United. We would have to sell him before any of the afforementioned three saw the light of day.

Erm, if we sign Sorin or Bridge it is because Micky is being sold - we don't let players let their contracts run down like this so he's clearly on his way out. I know you don't hold any stock in what kevthered says, even though he's got Rio right to add to his previous correct stories, but he said a while back that Micky is on his way out too. To me its just a question of which left back comes in now, and that depends on who's prepared to sell.

Frankly, I don't consider the World Cup to be the highest level. I believe the Champions League is better, especially because players play in sync with each other while national team football is not as organized. Sorin tried his luck at Juventus and it didn't really work. I think he'll be a big risk. I'll take Silvestre any day.

I'm not against the idea of buying a promising young LB. I don't think Silvestre is going anywhere in the near future.

Sorin is a bit of a late developer it is true, similar to Micky in that respect I guess, but he's regarded as having improved enormously since those Juve days.

And yet, he'll probably be an even bigger risk than Juan Veron.

You have to admit its very rare for us to let a player get so near the end of his contract, almost every other player has been put on long contracts 2 years before their old one was due to expire. He's out of here, he's had too many chances, he's just too inconsistent.
