Cole, I remember being in school assembly and the headmaster announced it.
Also the sale of Stam to Lazio, think I was on holiday at the time so hadn't been following any rumours.
 
RVP was linked with us a lot but it was a surprise in that nobody expected it to ever happen then all of a sudden we announced it.

Rojo and Falcao were totally out the blue.
 
Fellaini was one signing I didn't see coming. Got tired waiting for some news last day of the window and fell asleep.
 
Can we stop talking about Falcoa, literally the most disappointed I've been for a player not to work out for us. Although he did provide us with one of my favourite chants in recent history so there is that
 
Mata was a shocker. I only remember the rumours suddenly popping up during that January window and even then, I didn't believe it would actually happen during mid-season.

Phil Jones was another one. He had been linked to Liverpool for months, then we came in at the last minute and hijacked the deal.

I was in France back when you had to sign up to transfer news through text. Being told we had signed Ronaldo for £12.9m. I was like he's a bit cheap how have we signed the Brazilian for that?

This was definitely not out of the blue.
The media were talking about the transfer a lot, in the run up to the actual signing.
It was one of the worst kept secrets in football and Moyes was desperate to salvage a season which was falling apart with every game.

Fair call after I just re-read the op as they asked for " done deals " that unexpectedly occurred. I guess my point was before the story broke Mata going to United would have been unthought of. As per your reference to Moyes - he was a desperate signing, great player but not what we needed at the time.
 
RvP. Was dead certain he was going to Real (not sure why), but I was thrilled we got him.
 
Never recalled us being linked with Vidic and Evra at the time before they signed.

The Henrik Larrsson loan deal was another.

That was a world record fee for a teenager, I think. How times have changed.
 
Cantona and Cole for me, but Cole for me is most memorable because we was driving and I flicked the radio to hear the news and thought I miss heard it.
 
Andy Cole. I remember coming home from school and someone saying in the shop United had signed Cole. I thought he was lying until I got home an hour later and read it on ceefax.
 
While most of the names mentioned here were surprises, many were fairly unknown to the average fan, I stress average (including me), but Andy Cole was a different matter, after 68 goals in 84 games for Newcastle, that transfer announcement, from nowhere, was simply stunning.
 
Poborsky! A decent tournament performance, next thing you know hes ours! Didn't ever see him coming if my memory serves me right?
 
Falcao.

We all thought we were getting Vidal that summer.
 
Falcao was linked to Real and City all window. There were a few from the Colombian press who said we wanted him past midnight GMT and it blew up the next day (deadline day too IIRC).
 
Falcao for sure. Looked destined for Real Madrid(there was a deleted tweet as well).

Shame he didn't pan out.
 
Teddy Sheringham, Uncle is a mad Spurs fan and shocked him to the core that he left for United, never saw it coming and only found out via teletext we were linked with a "Spurs Star"

I forget which way around it was but Didn't one of them turn up for a medical and the other one was right behind unannounced. We seeemd to think we'd sign one of them but ended up with both and the deal was relatively quick.

Shame it didn't work out for either though.
