Shutter Island (SPOILERS ONLY - If You Haven't Watched, Do Not Open)

I thought he was sane throughout the whole film, but they made him believe he was insane. Then at the end he realised that was happening so chose to die/whatever they did to him at the end.

One of the most boring movie experiences I've ever had. All the bit characters were overacted in settings that were over saturated with color. Never cared less about a character in a 'serious' movie [as opposed to pure pulp].

as i said, i think he was insane, then he was cured, but couldnt face his past in a sane state

the insanity cushioned him, when he was cured he was cursed, so he played crazy to get lobotomized

i think it was a brilliant movie

I thought the smoking gun as to why he was insane, until his relapse at the end, was that the "real" woman he met (can't remember her name) was wearing the same clothes as the fake one. There is no explanation as to why they would make the clothes the fake was wearing the same.

The fact that nobody can say with any certainty what exactly happened somehow made this film great. Anything that is still provoking so much thought and arguments after this length of time has to go down as great. Epic, even.

I liked the film but I think it's more a case of no explanation making complete sense rather than there being various theories that explain everything.

I can dig that. The fact that it's so open to interpretation makes it brilliant though. So many people have taken different meanings from the way the film ended. Every single little thing in the film seems like a clue to what could be the real outcome, it was just one big massively successful WUM.

I remember the trailer for this film in which some crazy old lady spooked the shit out of me, I just decided it 'wasn't my kinda film'. Anyway eventually I got round to watching it to find out it was nothing like the trailer made it seem, and it's actually a fairly decent film.

You must love Donnie Darko then

Is it bad if I haven't watched those movies? :nervous:
Shutter Island is totally stunning movie in my view.
You should definitely watch these 2 movies, although imo both are little overrated.

Usual Suspect
The problem with The Usual suspect was that I somehow knew in the middle of the movie what the ending would be like for some reason.

 hardly spoiler worthy

Not if it's provoking the same thoughts and and arguments over and over again from different people. And it's basically just two thoughts. That just means that some people took longer to figure it out and some people took longer to voice their opinion on it, not that it's some sort of intellectual masterpiece! Decent film all the same.

You can say exactly what happened in the film. Marcos already has. Finding other interpretations is pointless and looking for something that isn't there. It was predictable and boring despite the good acting.

I feel everything is a spoiler,I love watching a movie, when I know almost nothing about it. For example I loved sixth sense because I didn't know anything about it. Otherwise you would expect certain things(like twists), I hardly watch trailers for the same reason.

Edit- Similarly I didn't know anything(literally) about shutter island. After watching first 30 minutes it felt like a normal suspense movie which is what made me love it. At best I just read the ratings although they too somehow interfere with your judgement so yeah I try to avoid them also but that is very hard thing to do.

Yep. If I'm honest, I thought it was a decent to average B movie done by a good director, and the ending explanation was fairly obvious and not particularly thought provoking. He's insane, realises, "choses" to remain insane. The alternative - that he's actually sane and they've convinced him he's insane - is stupid and doesn't work. There are far better epic mind feck films. That are actually mind fecks.

I love those kind of movies, would you mind recommending some? Sorry if derailing the thread. Got a free week so looking for something new.

Watch Primer TB, you will love that. I'm going to watch it now.

You did recommend that movie when I was in newbies, totally loved it. I like your taste in movies and tv shows, quite similar to mine.

Films with a twist, or films with ambiguous endings or films a bit like Shutter Island? Secret Window & Identity are a bit like Shutter Island. They also aren't that great.

If this ain't directed by Scorses, it doesn't get like half of the praise it does, it's barely even a Scorsese film really, at no point did it really feel like one either, maybe that was the problem, maybe it was just mediocre.....I mean he's changed genre before, and even most recently, and still kept the Scorsese magic there. This was just bad, fair play to him for taking the risk though.

Don't really know what you want in a "mind feck" film tbh, if you want to think a lot about what the films telling you or want the film to simply confuse the feck out of you....Blade Runner fits the bill for former, Eraserhead or most Lynch for the latter.

I think I'll try secret window. Is cube any good?

Blade Runner's ambiguousness depends on what version you watch to be fair. But it's certainly more ambiguous than this.

I watched it when I was pretty young. It's a horror film. I remember quite liking it. It's more like Saw than it is this.

I also keep thinking the Phillip Schofield iTV game show is it whenever I flick through the schedules, and keep wondering why they're playing it on a mid saturday evening.

Seen lynch movies, blade runner looks really interesting.

Incidentally Shutter Island is based on a book, in which his insanity has been explicitly stated by the writer. There really isn't anything to discuss about it. Other than perhaps how aware Di Caprio is at the very end.

Dark City another good one too in the mould of Blade Runner-ish. Directors cut mind you. Pretty whacked film, but really good too.
