I don’t think you can really ‘improve’ your scouting to a point where you’d be casually buying a Sturm Graz striker on the back of a handful of games. It’s like saying we should have bought Lewandowski when he was at Lech Poznan, if you do that there are no guarantees that the player will follow a similar development path to the one he is on if he moves to a smaller club and becomes a regular there. Then we need to improve our scouting? Look at Brentford finding PL level strikers on the cheap. Watkins and Toney would walk into our team to this day. Even fecking Maupay would have played a lot for us last season. There’s no point in us shopping at the top table once the player is a fully known quantity because if they are truly top class they are most likely going to choose Madrid Barca or Bayern over us. We aren’t the draw we once were. We can’t get any edge like that apart from the fact that we are prepared to give big wages but at that point big wages are a given and other factors come into play.
We do sign a huge number of youth players before they are picked up by other clubs though. Our academy is full of them. It’s just that they usually don’t work out to a point where they can contribute to the first team, and for the last few years we haven’t really had a habit of giving them a chance anyway. I don’t think it’s going to change anytime soon as ETH is not the type of a manager to rotate or give heavy minutes to inexperienced young players, which is even more of a reason why signing random players from smaller leagues is probably not the best idea as they won’t play anyway.
