Should ten Hag get the sack if he fails to qualify for the Champions League?

It’s not really knee jerk, imagine failing to qualify, getting absolutely hammered by the scouse and city in 1 season and the way we are playing city will put a big score on us in the final.

Imagine taking over a team which everyone agreed was a shambles, winning a cup, getting to the final (so far) in another and being top 4 with 4 games to go. And then being sacked…..

Obviously not.

Not least because at the start of the season we generally weren't expected to finish in the top four anyway.

The bookmakers had us finishing 6th and a poll on this forum saw 61.6% predicting we'd finish outside the top four, 80.1% predicting no better than 4th. It's not realistic to sack a manager at the end of the season for failing to meet expectations he wasn't actually expected to meet.

The big disappointment would be the way we would have lost it, with a late season collapse. Luckily we're in a position where we're still able to lose another of our four remaining games, four of which are at home. So we don't have delve too deep into these unhappy thoughts just yet.

Probably not. But if he doesn’t get top four from that position he’d impressively guided us into, he’s probably a dead man walking either way.

The sentiment around the club will be sour to the point that I can’t see him turning it around from that. Hope we get fourth, though, and that I’m wrong if we don’t.

Heaton or Butland I don't care, just not De Gea.
Heaton is injured and throwing Butland in for his debut at this point would be pretty risky. I'd be willing to take that risk, but I can understand why Ten Hag isn't.

To those who don’t think he should get the sack what are you’re reasons for this? And you can’t say the footballs been better

He has surpassed my expectations. The problem is, people kept raising their expectations as the season went on. Think back to what they were when he joined.

I think there's a chance the new owners will replace him regardless. Whoever they bring in as DOF will likely want his own man.
I was thinking the same thing. Don’t agree with it but I do think it’s a possibility.

Feck off, i know you are not being serious but the amount of nonsense you have spouted in multiple threads about not being worried about Liverpool and pointing and laughing at others, fecking dimwit posts.

I'm being serious. If he bottles top 4 he has no business being at this club. No CL football after a full season should be an instant sack.

Remember the shambles of a team from last season, did people really think he was going to solve all the problems in 1 season? It's the players that keep letting us down that need replacing not the manager

No, but he needs to really gut this squad open in a way that no manager has done previously in the summer. And I don't mean just send a couple of players out on loan, I mean SELL at least 5-6 players, including some on the highest wages.

This current team is going nowhere near the league title, not under ten Hag or any manager.

Problem for Ten Hag is he set the expectations too high too early. And then the reality of this squad, lack of depth, lack of quality, arrived.

This isn't a knee-jerk thread. No other United manager survived not qualifying for the CL in his first full season post-Fergie.

It's a distinct possibility now. Should he stay or go if it happens?

We need a poll.
not a knee jerk but posted right after the game..... get a grip..... there is a wardrobe asking you to go on a magical mystery tour to Narnia............Our fans......wow

Not for me. I have been underwhelmed by him and it would be a bottle job if we don't make top 4 but still trust him as a coach. Has to improve next season but not sure going back to square one this summer is the way forward.

If we do bottle it, it will be in similar fashion to Arsenal last season.

The short term-ism of this forum is genuinely depressing. He's got a squad of rubbish, with one decent team who are exhausted. He took us over at at rock bottom, had our main striker quit and wasn't backed in any way to replace him, and he's trying to turn a counter attacking team assembled over years into a proactive football team.

If you want him gone, then logically you'll have to accept going back to Mourinho & Ole style football, as that's what this squad was built to do and that's the only way to get any immediate success out of it. To rebuild will take time, and a few drubbings, as folks are finding out now.

Some people here don't care about that, it is all about moaning without context.

It can't be worse than De Gea at this point , what do we have to lose?

Well it is

Take a look back at the run after the City drubbing, all the way through until Casemiro started getting a bit handsy with opponents.

We had completely changed the way we played and was playing so much better.

Then we got suspensions, injuries, and about 5000 matches in three months.

No. We played some good stuff when we had a fit squad. But I said before, I think he’ll be gone before the end of next season if we’re not in Top 4 then (I wouldn’t sack him, necessarily, but the club will, I think).

Summer window is gigantic for him and the problem he’s got is that attracting players will be tough if we’re not in CL next year.

Definitely not with the dross that he's stuck with. Players who are scared of the ball, scared of tackles, scared of 50\50's and who will lose their fight against any team that shows some aggression or passion. No manager would do great with this lot.

Having said that, he's shown a lot of naivety with his tactics and substitutions lately, and bizarre choices such as Weghorst being an ever present. He clearly isn't a world class manager yet, but hopefully he'll get there.

It is a reason for the sack usually but no point going from zero AGAIN. And he did made a progress in some things.
Whatever happens i want him next year here. But next year...zero excuses for him.

No, who would you get in?
There is always someone. Just don’t think start/stop/start benefits us in any way.
He just needs to step up something, whatever it may be and keep moving towards getting it right at some point.

Some here are treating that League Cup win as if it's Champions League trophy.

Really get a goddamn grip and have some standards.

I fully wanted and backed him but could you imagine Real Madrid settling for that? They wouldn’t and that’s why they’ve won 13 Champion’s League titles. When you’ve been in the top 4 the majority of the season it’s completely unacceptable to fall out of top 4 to the Scouse rats, who he was also responsible for gifting them their biggest gloating point in their club’s history.

No but his position is not as secure as it once was as he was lifting the League Cup and coming off beating Barcelona over two legs.

I don’t believe for a minute that he seriously wants Wout Weghorst even as a bench option. It’s just the wankers from Tampa have decided to sell up and we’ve had to resort to bargain bin dipping for a Championship team striker, because they won’t spend money.

He needs to get rid of a few of these players he has inherited, namely DDG, Maguire and Martial. Otherwise that will cost him.

To those who don’t think he should get the sack what are you’re reasons for this? And you can’t say the footballs been better

1. To bring in whom?
2. The football has been better since the Cup final we have dropped off not sure why.
3. He took over an absolute shambles of a team with a shocking mentality and confidence Rock bottom. He has turned it around. Unfortunately too many of the weak cnuts are still here.
4. He's not a magician I don't think after last seasons showing many of us expected two cup finals and to be in a strong (although not so much now) position to get top 4. He deserves another season.

No to be honest even if we end up disastrously missing out on top 4. I'd give him another chance next season with some new additions. However he would be lucky as most of our managers would get the chop for missing CL.

The most worrying thing is our play doesn't show signs of progressing. It's actually getting worse, hopefully just mental fatigue from the long season.

Please, please, just use your brain for a second.

Stop this short-term thinking.

Does it matter long-term if we lose out on top 4 by 1 point? I still think we will make it, but it could be decided by 1 simple mistake in a game, like De Gea today. Does something as miniscule as that decide the next few years of this football club? Something that isn't even the manager's fault?

Look at Arsenal. They would be nowhere near 80 points this season had they sacked Arteta 12 months ago for missing out on top 4 by 2 points.

Even if we completely bottle the run-in, I think he should get another season. He's brought a lot to the club.

That's not to say he hasn't made major mistakes.
  1. Spending a crazy sum on Antony
  2. Moving our best player (Bruno) all over the pitch rather than playing him in his number 10 position
  3. Keeping Maguire as captain
  4. Making bizarre subs that disrupt the team
  5. Wout fecking Weghorst

No because there have been so many extenuating circumstances this year it’s impossible to tell whether he’s been dealt a fecking dud hand and done well or if he’s making mistakes. A second season without all the bollocks would help us see that. He’s had no time on the training ground with the team since October, two games a week every single week for 7 months.
