Turned it on to see how he’s doing and he gets injured and comes off within a couple of minutes.

I think it was said that a family member of the player contacted the club and took issue with the pronunciation of his name on MUTV. MUTV then started calling him Sho ra teeray.

It is a Yoruba name and i suspect Shola himself isn’t fluent in the language. His parents contacted MUTV to correct them about the pronunciation of the name which Shola himself apparently does not know.

That would make sense if it were the forename, but it’s a surname so more like to be heard regularly by the likes of teachers or peers, who won’t be aware of the origins of the name and often anglicise it. Or the child won’t have the same connection to the original name which represents a large part of the identity to the parents so will just go with whatever people say.
That is the correct pronunciation Incase anyone was wondering. And yes, Shola doesn't seem fluent in the language, which is not surprising. I have seen similar Yoruba kids who mispronounce their own names - some even preferring the westernized pronunciation over the Yoruba pronunciation. Suppose that's the case with our lad here.

Not in Yoruba culture. His parents would not be yelling out his full name (especially surname) no matter what he did.
These names still have meanings that are easily understood by people who speak the language unlike Western names.
You have got to understand the language for it to make sense enough in order to pronounce it right though. Shore-Tyre or Sure-Tyre has no meaning and it’s basically a nonsense word.

I get that "shore tyre" is an anglicised version and not the original pronunciation, but surely if that's how he says it then that's how we should be saying it as well?
