Shelf-life of comedians...

Yes, that was essentially the UK version of the Daily Show. Crap.

The other shows you mention I also agree on. Add anything Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris have been involved with, everything Stewart Lee has done and Charlie Brookers' other programmes (screenwipe, newswipe etc) to that list too.

I've seen the 10'Clock thing and Screen/Newswipe (after recommendations here), those were shit and couldnt tie the shoelaces of the The Daily Show/Colbert Report.

I know you cant watch the clips off their websites in the UK, but you really should watch some (use VPNs), you're way off the mark. Granted, some knowledge of the US political/media scene is required.

I'd agree with George Carlin. If anything he got slightly better. I've always found Bill Hicks overrated. I watched a documentary on him recently and I didn't laugh at any of the footage once. It was one of those things where I thought "hold on, what's wrong with me, is there something I'm missing here?".. a lot like Seinfeld. Although not nearly as annoying.

It's mostly due to them not being about to adapt to different styles of comedy....and once you've heard the same gig once, twice...three times....you get the point, you get bored...when you can predict most of the stuff comedians start to use before starting to watch dvd(or downloaded show or tv special or one of their shows), it's partially useless to you.

agree with the Hicks thing. when I was younger I thought he was the funniest thing I'd ever heard. But watched a live show recently repeated and didnt laugh once. seinfeld the series I loved. But his stand up never made me laugh

Bill Maher I find very funny. would love to see a full stand up show but his 'real time' show I find clever and funny

Apparently his (Jerry Seinfeld's) standup is basically the same all the time with small variations. In that if a joke worked in 1989, he still uses it in his act. That seems a bizarrely miserly way of constructing a comedy set.

he was always the least funny character on the series too. he's playing dublin soon. I may go but I have a feeling it'll be awful

I'd say part of what he does on stage is loosely based on a script/set but he seems to deviate so much from one line of thought to another that he end's up just winging it most of the time.

I mean this line, "when you're 20 or 25 you can dream about whatever you want, you can dream you are a swan, made of honey, burping out little Barry Manilows, who stab each other in the leg with compases"

Who in their right mind would write that down as a possible gag/joke?
Yet when you see it in context, it's fecking hillarious.

Oddly enough I've seen Dylan Moran two nights in a row (free tickets, naturally) and there wasn't that much deviation from the 'script' despite the ramshackle nature of the delivery. However there were a lot of asides that seemed to be from the top of his head.

Screenwipe and Newswipe crap? I am outraged cinc, outraged!

Seconded... what the feck?! Huge fan of the Daily Show, but I found Newswipe to be better.

They're different shows though, obviously. One details and examines specifics, the other draws a general understanding of the news and media.

I know he's not stand up, but i used to find Chris Moyles hilarious on Radio 1 in the mornings. Now i can't stand the obnoxious prick!

I've spent 5 hours a night watching News/Screenwipe bits on youtube. Shit is a bit strong adjective, but every observation Brooker has is bloody obvious and it is generally unfunny. It doesnt examine specifics, its the equivalent of a bloke having a rather generic go at the pub at something.

It is still TV on once a week in the UK. I have a knowledge of US Politics. I just find their style incredibly unsophisticated and childish. It is about as cutting edge as a soggy donut. I really cannot stand John Oliver either.

Aye the Daily Show is awesome, my favourite regular TV show probably even though I have to wait for someone to put it up on megavideo. However for me Screenwipe and Newswipe are just better. They are on less often but the content is generally more consistent and they have excellent contributions from people like Stewart Lee and Doug Stanhope.

On a good day the Daily Show is just as funny, but you never know when they'll have a shitty guest who's interview takes up half the show. Or a long feature from John Oliver or the female comic who does the reports.

I can only repeat myself the Wipes are generic as hell and the guy with the poems is horrible.

Disagree, I think Brooker deconstructs the bullshit of tv and news brilliantly and is darn funny while he does it.

I cant post the whole clips (Viacom and youtube dont mix well), but this is a funny bit on the bizarre world of cable news. (This is an MSNBC retelling of a Stewart-Fox News feud)

Or

Eddie Murphy is God. 'Delirious' and 'Raw' are still hysterical.

I respectfully disagree. They are horribly dated. His routine about Aids is about as ignorant as comedy can get.

Eddie Murphy is the very definition of a comedian with a short shelf life. He's been churning out dross for nearly 20 years now.

Tommy Tiernan is another strange one. Used to be funny and then tried to break America which apparently broke him.

I went to see him, Ardal O'Hanlon and Dylan Moran at the Liverpool Echo Arena a few years ago (compered by John Bishop) and he was the funniest of the lot. His bit on the guy with Down's Syndrome chatting up birds in the pub (while they were with their fellas) was some of the funniest shit I've ever heard.

I am a willful ignoramus. I love them.

In fairness Jon Stewart has Fox News to feck with.

Brooker only has Sky, it's not a fair comparison in terms of the amount of material it provides.

You don't have to have seen the Daily Show to have come across any of those. I mean Fox is a phenomenon on the internet and stuff like this is all over youtube.

Admittedly Brooker is summarising the entirety of Fox in one segment for a British audience - it's very unlikely he would really touch on something in those 6 minutes that hasn't been covered in 15 odd seasons of the Daily Show.

I said "might have seen" - as they were all covered extensively on it, not that he must have seen it on there.

To me its all generic on his show - he's a good natured and by his other work, clearly talented man, but i dont think news/screenwipe is anything to write home about.

I thought Chappelle walked away because he thought the game was corrupt? And that the media had accused him of being on insane, and on crack... that's why he went to Africa right?

Either way I'd say he's the funniest black comedian since Richard Pryor, feck Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock. Chappelle was too smart for them

he walked away because he felt the pressure of that insane money (55 million) brought to his show - an enviroment clearly not suitable for great work

Coming here I don't have the distractions of fame. It quiets the ego down. I'm interested in the kind of person I've got to become. I want to be well rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well balanced. I've got to check my intentions, man.

Knew I'd seen him explain giving up somewhere..

3:40 onwards he breaks it down in detail. "Did I get too big?"
