Shearer's comments...

Peter Reid is a guest this week on ESPN's Football Focus and he said

"i wouldn't rely on Barthez too much".

any thoughts?

I suppose any team that lets in 3 at home can't say their defence had a blinder....and of course any side that lets in 5 had a worse game defensively.

And that is what Shearer said.

our defence did have a blinder, their first 2 goals were unstoppable and we restricted them to long range shots. until bellamy's goal they hadnt had a clear chance at goal, and this was an attacking team with many great players.

Im pretty sure I saw a litle bit of a smirk/smile from Barthez when Shearer done that and got carded

I agree that Cantona was the better option.

Dissing Shearer is pathetic.

The rest you talk about was awesome.

The camera was behind Fab so I couldn't see his face.

It wouldn't surprise me coming from him.

Can you please tell me what contribution Shearer has made on the biggest stages in World football?

None.

The shellsuited wanker.

True enough. It's him and a certain Irish bloke I can't stand. Holier than thou bastards who've got the media licking their arse just because they talk nice and say what everyone wants to hear.

Give me Keano anyday. Talk straight, no bollocks.

Lucky he's a good footballer or he wouldn't have any redeeming qualities. He's a damn good player I'll give him that.

You really are an arse Gwyn.

I have listed some of his record and if you continue to ignore his talent it says more about your lack of knowledge on football and bias than anything.

But then you know more than all the managers that have played him don't you?

Shellsuit?....what's that all about?

I wasn't trying to defend Shearer, just remind you guys about that meaningless trophy they won although Brazil still beat them (ROMARIO)! If a team wins a competition, surely it is due to their players and thats the same for our players when we win a trophy.

Sorry Marching he has got one league medal.

His performances in World Cups, European Championships, and in Europe have shown him to be limited outside the confines of the Premier League.

Tell me how he compares to a Raul, a Kluivert, a Ronaldo, a Bierhoff even?

Not very well.

Wasn't it great when we sang "Shearer won feck all" on Saturday :D

The greedy one is quite correct. United were poor defensively. My grannie could have scored the cartoons 3rd goal. Yes, we scored 5 and took our chances for once, but to let in 3 goals at home and allow a couple more gilt-edge chances that went begging does not add up to good defending to me.

The first was an absolute fluke, the second no goalkeeper could have stopped, so that leaves us with just one goal where we lost concentration. Mind you Brown and O Shea have not played together at all this season, so what in the world are you smoking when you say Man Utd were poor defensively. I do believe that the Bernard shot was their first shot anywhere near the goal, would not blame Fabian if he got little bored and went to sleep. I definitely it was one of our better performances defensively this season.

So we agree that his talents are confined to one of the hardest leagues in the world...a league where he has scored so many goals and holds so many records...as that is what I was talking about all along - fair enough.

I know how many medals he has mate and he did have the choice to win many more...he could have joined MU.

Unless you understand the Geordie culture you will never get this point - for him to come home, in the same way as Bobby Robson has, means more than bits of metal and awards.

Bobby Robson went home via Barcalona, PSV etc and was probably the most stable and arguably successful manager England has had over the past 20 years - Mexico '86 and Italy '90.

Shearer has gone via Southampton and Blackburn - not quite the same calibre is it? He hasn't even been abroad to flog his 'talents' - unusual to say the least for one who is/was supposed to be so great. Could it be that he is (or was) a little bit shy of trying his luck in the big league, worried his lack of all round talent would be shown up? worried by the demands and expectancy that the 'Big boys' would have? As the 'Geordie culture' of home can't answer it ( it's not bothered others) I think possibly so.
