Seriously, how much would you want United to pay for Rio?

United have the money, poo don't.

End of.

I'm in your direction, but 27m would be a fairer price IMO.

Since Leeds first signed him for 18m (which I thought was way over the top at the time) there is the issue of general economic inflation, the fact that they will want at least 5m profit on him, and that they know how desperate we are to sign a quality new CB. I feel 27m is a good price all considered. But if it takes another 3m, then so be it.

He will probably be given a 6yr contract if he comes.

upto 25mil...anything over that is crazy money for a CB.. especially for one that still has a long way to go before he can be classed as world class.

I thought Leeds were insane to buy him for 18m two years ago. Now he's likely to go for 50% more. <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

i'd prefer him over Nesta, however, i get this horrible feeling we'll end up paying 35 mil for a guy who's price has been inflated due to a good world cup... tho i must add he's had a good season with leeds..

i wonder how he'll handle such a big price tag??

but it's all relative, isn't it raoul? is he £25M better than william gallas? or titus bramble?

i think it's loony personally, and i also think you lot would be insane to pay even £20M when there are bargains to be had in serie a, but a player is only worth what a purchasing club will pay for him. . .and ferdinand has enough weaknesses in his game IMO for it to be worth your while looking eleswhere.

IMO it's crazy money for any player. My grandad was saying that when Trevor Francis went for over 1m. It's just the way things are I'm affraid.

Who currently has the tag "Most expensive defender" and what did he go for? Thuram 22m? I cant remember.

true...

but i can't help get this feeling that we're buying a player who's in a 'purple patch'..ok 20-25mil's fair enough... but 35mil!!

BTW 1.5m on Robbo was great business ;)

I am not bothered tbh. Yeah, I'd love to get him at bargain price, but I'll be just happy if we get him. I've said all summer, I'll be happy as long as we sign one player; a quality defender.

Although, anything more than £30-35m is a bit excessive, but thats transfer prices for ya thesedays.

Here-here. I'm not knocking Italians, but I'd prefer an English Center-Back anyday.

oh i agree that all players have weaknesses, but ferdinand? i think that as a sweeper, he's excellent. in a back 4 in the world cup where most opponents only had one dedicated striker, he's excellent.

but in a back 4 in the high-tempo premiership where most teams play 2 forwards, i think he's suspect. he gets pulled out of position and he doesn't have the time on the ball that he would like. . .

actually, jedi master would be ecstatic if we signed rio & either ayala or thuram, or heaven's of heaven, nesta!!!!quite seriously, we do need 2 CBs, 1 leftback and bloody hell, PAOLO DI CANIO........so how much is that nike deal worth again ;) .........and regarding rio, again jedi master says, no way do we go anything more than david may( :mad :) in exchange for him and even that is daylight robbery.......maysie's twice, heck 2.5 times the defender that rio bloke'll ever be......and we bloody need him to lead the cheers when we win the Champions League at OT May 2003 <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> .......those conniving bastards at leeds......

Nobody's mentioned why this price business personally upsets them yet. Why do you care? How does it affect you personally? Are you worried that other fans will ridicule you because your team has spent a lot of money?

Err...a tad. But as I mentioned earlier, its the fear that United be caught with our pants down and have to beg other clubs to buy or players, like Leeds eh Marching?

Tell me, in what way would this fear manifest itself? In the form of ridiculing scousers? Haven't you learned to take it all in your stride having had the Veron case study to learn from?

Sheesh, since when did my "a tad" become the overwhelming reason...oh I forgot you're Dans.

k, I read you're first post and quite simply we are not in a financial crisis, so that don't cut it for me mate. My question still stands : we can afford him, so why are we worrying about the price?

And you turned "a tad" into "an overwhelming reason" not me. ;)

I thought the 18mil leeds payed in the first place was absolutely daft,35 mil is a joke.If we cant get him for 20 mil it should be left well alone

We are already mad to want him. He will only be sold at 35m pounds yet it is debatable if he is our messiah :(

we aren't at the moment... mainly because we're careful in the transfer market...however, i'd hate for us to buy a player that costs 35+..and the prices for similar or better players become considerably lower..mainly due to the fact that many big clubs around Europe are becoming strapped for cash... especially Italian ones.... (one main reason coz they've continued to shell out astronmical fees)

TBH i think United are the only club around that can afford to shell out 35million... and there's no need for us to be shafted by a cash strapped Leeds.. they need the cash not us..and should be willing to part with Rio for 25mil... remember they've got debts and are also currently financing a £70mil(?) stadium...

to answer your question... i don't want United to follow the example of SerieA clubs.. so the price of transfer fees is important.....

I dearly want him to sign but not for over 25 mill. IMO we cannot aford to ignore the realities of the current market place and to pay more than this when we could sign alternatives ( thuram?) for a frasctio of the price iwould be foolish. It ould only make sense if we have no intention of buying other players either now or next summer, or if we are prepared to offload players ( Veron) to finance more purchases. If the latter is the option, in the current market place who's going to fork out 30 mill for Veron. And if we couldn't get that for one of the greatest midfield talents in the World, why would we consider 30 mill plus for a centre back?

and thats our chance ... were on the very few clubs in europe who can afford to spend really big ... if we do it wisely, we could cement our place on top of the premiership and europe for years to come

I'm with Dans here, what the hell does the fee matter to any of us? Nothing!

If the PLC give SAF the cash, and SAF feels that he is worth the cash, why the hell should we care? What reason? NONE!

Do you want the guy? Yes, ok splash it, no.... different argument.

I still say 27m is the fair price though! :)

Let SAF decide that, he KNOWS what he is doing, unlike yourself. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

We are the richest club in the world. Ferdinand is the best CB in the world for his age, one of the best fullstop. If we want the best players in the world, then we have to be willing to pay for them.

Ferdinand has a decade at the top, if we sign his first contract for four years and win some trophys, he won't want to leave us. So we may have to pay the big bucks right now, but in the long term it should be worth it.

I can't see us getting him for less than 28, but I'm willing to pay the 35 million.

If Veron was worth £28m then Rio is definitely worth that much too yet we've only bid £20m and are not making another bid. WTF is going on?
