Sergio Romero interested in Manchester United return

Thought he was excellent when he was here - would deffo take him back

Wasn't his wife/girlfriend super pissed at us for not playing or selling him?

Can you blame her? Romero was a proven keeper and international who was solid for us throughout his career here. At one point he came close of winning his 1st team place. Then Henderson returned and Romero was dropped like a bag of cement simply because he lack 'United DNA'. When he wanted out, Cardiff blocked the move

No, absolutely not, but what changed? He's even less likely to take the starting position than he was back then

I feel we could have treated our keepers post-Fergie era better.
Especially Romero, Valdes, and Henderson. I forgot the stupid reason why Valdes got frozen out by Van Gaal, but I think he deserved better.

Would take him back as 2nd/3rd choice but didn’t he leave in the 1st place due to wanting to be 1st choice?
Don’t think so. He was fine with being second choice but following Henderson’s emergence he didn’t want to be third.

If his knees aren’t completely shot I’d certainly prefer him over the Watford lad.

I think his departure was a side effect of Solskjaer‘s method of trying to keep everyone happy, regardless of whether they’d play or not.

But there’s no more Woodward, no Judge and no Solskjaer. It’s different people now with Arnold, Murtough and ETH.

So what? Different people in charge now :)

Im just pointing out that certain portions of our fanbase probably massively overreacted to him being ‘mistreated’ and nobody actually knew what was going on

I wouldn't mind it. He was always a pretty reliable number two and probably a slightly safer option than Tom Heaton.

Why? Henderson is a goner, we are in the Europa league and DDG is older Eth is a real manager who probably respect talent more then dna

Maybe. We let others move on (Smalling, Young) when it became apparent to them that they’d fallen down the pecking order and wanted to be playing.

I think Romero was in a similar position; Everton wanted him as backup but the deal collapsed as Woodward was hanging on for a slightly better fee.

We were still paying him handsomely, so he was hardly mistreated. But I have a lot more respect for players who want to move on when their time’s up than those who are happy to sit on the bench awaiting their next contract extension.

Oh, I agree. I have nothing against Romero and would welcome him back as a #2. But the reaction from a section of our fanbase to us not letting a player go to a same league team because they weren’t paying what we wanted was ridiculous

Nobody puts as much effort in their #2 goalkeepers as United does. One of the most pointless positions in football to actually spend money on and not just use a youth guy.

Not a bad option if he’s free but I’d like to see us promote someone from the academy and have Heaton as second choice.

He served the role of third choice keeper because he was our third best keeper.

Should have granted him a move to Everton then he was obviously too good to be a third choice keeper, keeping him in that spot is just ridiculous.

How many clubs use GK from their youth team as #2?

Maybe we should have, that’s on Woodward. Regardless, he had a contract. And he was never good enough to be anything other than back up for any club near the top of one of the biggest leagues. He’d have been sitting on the bench at Everton too. With no Europa League for him to play in.

Proper professional and never left on bad terms despite not playing much.

Would take him back in a heartbeat.

As good a backup keeper as you can ask for.

So he can throw a strop again and refuse to show up for training? No thanks.

Most overrated player I’ve ever seen, relegation crap is where he belongs.

Yep, he can do one. Wasn't nearly as good as he thought, didn't have many offers when he left. Ended up at the worst team in Italy.

I don’t understand why Ole pushed him out to begin with, he was a solid backup keeper.

He didn't Solskjaer let him leave because he wasn't going to play ahead of DeGea or Henderson but he threw a hissy fit when we wouldn't sell him to Everton so he just ran his contract down instead of going somewhere else. Typical Mino Raiola client.

No thanks.

Romero's time at Man Utd is massively overrated. Has a good clean sheet record for us mostly cos he only played when we were facing poor sides.

He was as utterly useless when Van Gaal put him in for first XI matches, during DeGea's fax machine debacle.

Will command huge wages to sit around doing nothing. Why not just give the backup role to Heaton? Why do we need an international backup goalie? Liverpool have Kelleher, who's nowhere near Alisson's level.

Seems crazy we're looking at someone who will cost tens of K a week, for a need we don't have. But we aren't looking at a defensive midfielder who can hold next DeJong. Even on a free transfer.

How many give them wages of 100k+ and sign new ones every year with even the 3rd choice being 30+ years old??

100K+ wages happened once, most clubs have old players as 2nd and 3rd choice, not the one from youth team.

Not just this but in general, does anyone else find our transfer dealings on keepers bizarre?

Eriks's call. Need him ? Get him. Simple.

Scouting different type of keeper to De Gea should be somewhere on the horizon anyway. Probably bot the biggest priority, but still, combatitive GK with good instinct when to dive for a ball during oppo's cross could give ETH some options.

He is upgrade to Henderson so i would defo take him. He was our best no2 ever

is Nathan Bishop not up to the job ? i have not seen much of him but would have thought he was as worth a shot as much as anyone

What's the point of this when we have Heaton? Like Romero but Heaton is a good keeper

Manchester Evening News.

When they've linked every possible player to Manchester United and have to revert back to previous players.

So is Romero, and apparently got some dodgy knees in the meantime as well

Romero had to high points in his career.

A- At AZ when he won the league title under LVG
B- At Manchester especially during LVG (who brought him here) and Mou time

At Sampdoria he was entangled into a De Jong 'like' mess. Sampdoria gave him crazy money to sign for them only to later notice that they couldn't afford him. At that point they expected him to accept a pay cut which he refused and then they did their very best to get rid of him by giving him the cold shoulder and loaning him. At United he did very well up until the 'United' DNA mantra kick started. So Romero is a goalkeeper whose best periods of his career came with a Dutch club (AZ) and an English club (Man United) whom in turn were both managed by a Dutch manager at the time. We are/have both.

Regarding playing time its a well known secret that Henderson is leaving and there are strong rumours that Heaton will join Middlesbrough. Thus Romero would be DDG's backup. Considering that DDG is 31 and that we will be playing more games now because of the Europa league then Romero will get his share of games. I believe that at his age a backup role with a top club he knows inside out and whose known for paying high salaries is the best he can achieve.

I'm not against signing him, I'm just confused why he wants to come back after how things ended the first time

We've been so weird about back up keepers over the past few years. Its a position that is unlikely to be used and I think Heaton would be more than good enough if it ever came to it. I get that Henderson is leaving because he wants a shot at the England squad but Heaton and Bishop are surely sufficient cover for an unlikely situation.
