Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp GK)

Why not just sign Kovar back?

I don't think we could afford him. Leverkusen clearly signed him with a view to him replacing Hradecky as their starter in a couple of years and so they would want a lot more than they paid for him to let him go. Personally I would just stick with Onana and Heaton until the summer and then depending on how his loan in Austria has gone maybe promote Vitek. I would also drop Onana for Heaton but that is another conversation.

I thought we had a low buyback clause?

I think we should seriously give Radek Vitek a chance. He was so good in the only pre season game he played with us. We already have error prone Goal keepers, nothing wrong in trying him.

We inserted a buy back clause and we also have first refusal if they agree a deal to sell him but I don't think the amount of the buy back clause was ever mentioned. In similar deals such as the one for Alvaro the clause is basically double what we sold the player for, reasonable as nobody is going to agree a buyback at the same price they paid, so it is probably somewhere in the 15M range.

I agree on Vitek but not for this season. He is starting regularly in Austria right now which is the best thing for his development. He is not ready to start for us so I would rather he get experience than sit on the bench.

I've always quite liked Vitek. Big, strong, commanding, dominant, decisive etc. Proactive keeper and of course you aren't going to get every call right, so when he makes a mistake it can look rather glaring. Having watched him for years in the youth ranks, I've felt that his ability to play out from the back was an area he could improve. I haven't seen much of him in recent years during his loan spells, so can't comment on his recent performances.

And his positioning is soo good

I hope Onana can show some consistency again but I am slightly worried about him.

I don't really know alot about Senne Lammens. But ideally I would like to see us go for a GK with the potential to be the #1 if that is what the club is looking for. I think Vitek is doing well and a loan to a major European league is on the cards for him and that probably would be best for his development right now. He's still very young and the experience he's getting currently on loan is invaluable.

I mentioned a young keeper on here a few years ago who was playing for Shakhtar Donetsk at the time named Anatoliy Trubin. And I was wanting us to take a chance on him at the time due to the low transfer fee. He's since joined Benfica and is doing very well. Very well rounded GK who looks a great prospect at the age of 23 years of age. He would be the GK I personally would take a calculated chance on. He's amassed alot of experience for a young GK at the highest level and would be a very interesting player to sign imo.

One of my posts (below) from the past about the player.

Commanding keeper with the ability to distribute to a good level?

There's been talk of signing a younger keeper and I think that may well be a good way to build going forward. Keeping De Gea on a reduced contract and signing a younger more proactive keeper with the ability to distribute to a good level would be a sensible approach imo.

And without mentioning some of the more talked about names like Maarten Vandervoordt or Diogo Costa. I think we should pay more attention to Shakhtar Donetsk' goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin who is still 21, but looks to be developing as a well rounded keeper where his distribution, shot stopping and commanding presence has caught the eye. He's 6'6 tall and he's already amassed alot of experience playing against some of the biggest clubs in Europe where his all round ability is very evident. The talk around him is that he will be leaving his current club at the end of the season with many clubs interested. I've name dropped him in the past but he seems to have developed further since then as I explain below.

He played against Rennes yesterday in the Europa league and played well where he helped his club win the tie by saving 3 penalties in a shootout. And he seems to possess all the attributes one would expect from a keeper. And if he develops as I think he might, he's going to be a keeper with good shot-stopping ability, ball playing ability and cross claiming ability due to his physical presence.

vs Rennes below

The highlights below display many facets of his keeping but pay close attention to how he baits and resists the press.

I’ve only seen Vitek in that one pre-season game but he was class.

I’m all for getting a new keeper to replace Bayindir as from the very little we have seen, he doesn’t seem up to the challenge. I do feel sorry for him though, as he’s plays once in a blue moon and is expected to be match sharp and error free.

If we do sign someone like Lammens we need to sign someone we think is genuinely ready to play games and trusted to be our cup keeper or to be rotated in frequently to aid their development. If not, we might as well save ourselves the money and back one of our youth keepers or just sign a past-it keeper as a back-up to hopefully be required to step in as little as possible. There are a number of keepers running out of contract every summer that fit this bill that we can target.
