Selling Fred was a mistake

Our only high-energy number 8 shouldn't have been sold and definitely not while keeping the likes of McTominay.

The hope is Hannibal could replace him but today's involvement seems more like desperation than a planned move.

No, Fred was shit.

Not replacing him with better players was a mistake. We also tried to sell McTominay

No it wasn't. We have to accept that this only the start of what's to come. We need to completely get fecked in order to build from the scratch. Keeping Fred would only delay the inevitable.

Exactly. So confused why people think there are only two midfield options in the world and we are stuck between Fred and Mctominay.

His contract was up, and so was his time.

Replacing him with Mount was baffling.

The club rejected 30m for him while selling Fred for 8m. The line from the club is they need a huge offer to let him go, that's not trying to sell him.

Of course it was. He’s a better CM than at least two of our first 5 choices.

I liked Fred but letting him go at some point was the correct decision. We are not missing him, we are missing his energy. It is a shame, that this is the case but lets re-visit the matter once Amrabat and Mount are at least back.

He was hardly being used IIRC, even when Cas was suspended, so probably wouldn't have had the chance to make the difference anyway.

Selling him without an immediate replacement was the bigger issue.
Not sure why we didn’t sell him then go buy amrabat asap as the back cm
Sack off the mason mount idea, sack off dropping 50 mil on a gk
Go get a class cm

Buying Mount and keeping Scottish Maguire was the mistake.

Viva John Murtough

Wrong take. Not selling him and signing two ball playing midfielders early enough was the mistake. We signed one in the end but it was deadline day and he's injured.

I think the mistake was replacing him with Mount.

Selling him and using the funds to help buy a midfielder capable of controlling games against any opposition would've been the smart move.

Cas, Eriksen, Bruno, McT. Very little pace and running power in that group. Amrabat has plenty of energy but is a bit pedestrian in the main as well from what I have seen. Of course Fred would have been useful, had some excellent games (and some shockers) last season, including a really strong spell coming off the bench adding energy and impetus.

We are putting a lot of hope on Mainoo and Amrabat, an unfair amount of pressure, but the midfield needs restructuring, Cas and Eriksen can not be the starting pair.

Selling Fred was the correct decision. The only mistake is that it wasn't done years sooner.

You cannot rely on a midfielder if you never know whether he will deliver a 2/10 or an 8/10 performance.

Seeing the glaring issues in the squad, Mount looks more and more a bizarre way to spunk a good chunk of our budget away on.

Selling Fred and upgrading him wouldve been a good idea. Selling Fred and bringing in Mount however probably was a mistake.

This is what happens when you have to sell to buy. The club must be deluded thinking they were going to get actual money for Van de Beek to fund a new midfielder.

Although the sentiment is a bit kneejerk, I do think it would've made sense to keep Fred in light of all the other changes that seem to have destabilized our midfield.

When you have McTominay starting games after selling Fred you have to question the decision makers at the club.

People come out with the most absurd statements after a loss.

Fred was capable of some abject performances (as well as great ones in fairness), the wrong side of 30, with a year left on his contract I think. Selling him was the right decision.

Yep.

Fred, whilst better than McTominay and actually had a midfield profile nobody else in the team did — he wasn’t the answer. An actual central midfielder to replace him was

Selling Fred was not the mistake, replacing him with Mount was.

He was in the last year of his contract, the only other option was giving him a new multi-year deal.
