Selling Daley Blind

I think the main mistake was hiring Jose after LVG, they have such different philosophies that render half the squad brought by one manager incompatible with how the other wants to setup.

Daley Blind was not bullied in the PL, I remember him putting Lukaku in his pocket by anticipating his every move and intercepting every ball. He was playing defense when we smashed City, Liverpool, Tottenham and LVG’s system clicked. Goes to show that brains beat brawn.

And enough of this PL overhype, if he can successfully start and perform against Bayern, Real Madrid and Juventus, I’m sure he could handle Watford and Brighton ffs.

He always held his own, though. Lukaku, Aguero, Giroud - Blind did well against the lot. I can't remember anyone constantly getting the better of him.
it was these games that came to mind but there were others he struggled in too

generally though I think we've suffered without a Vidic/Stam type player who dominated our box - maybe he would have complemented a player like Blind well

at the same time Blind read the game quite well but he wasnt in the same league as Rio in a number of ways.... you need pace to play in the Premier League and manage attackers - A classy defender like Blanc can attest to that

Fair enough and I take back any doubt I may have had in your opinion of Blind.

I say this but does anyone know how he’s performing in general for Ajax ? The Dutch league is very weak in comparison to the PL. Obviously part of a very successful side in CL but that isn’t necessarily evidence that he’s ripping it up to a standard that would warrant a starting place in a side with PL title aspirations.

I thought he was tidy and combative but can’t really say I was too fussed when we discarded him.

One thing that no one can deny is he's a proper ball playing cb, not Lindelof.

Blind was not the answer when ee had him and still isnt. People need to let that one go.

He was heavily criticised on this forum when he played and now all of a sudden it was the wrong decision to move him on.

Strange.

Anybody see his defending for the NI goal yesterday? That's why we got rid of him. He's lauded as a great technical player but I think he's very overrated in that regard too.
Cause good players never make mistakes?

he makes mistakes and plays poorly in so many Holland games. For Ajax he's incredible for the most part though, so I don't hold those Dutch performances, in a position that simply doesn't suit him, against him

Maybe we should have sold some other players before him but overall, he wasn't very good for us. Anything else is rewriting history.

De Ligt made mistakes too tbh.

Agree. He's a good player, but he's extremely overrated here. Nothing in him makes me regret selling him.

You don't think he'd be better in the holding midfield role than Matic or McT? I disagree matey.

No he won't. LvG himself tested him there and shifted him to other positions because he was a disaster there. Just the first goal in these highlights will show you enough why :

He was marching there leaving the entire midfield open. He did the same mistakes or even worse in several other matches. He was a disaster there, so LvG decided to put him in LB and latter on as CB. He did plenty of mistakes as a CB too.

Blind and smalling is still our best defensive partnership post fergie, they complimented each other really well, I dont see how lindelof is anyway better than blind and his partnership with Maguire doesn't work well with the lack of pace between them.

I'd have Blind playing anywhere over the likes of Rojo, Jones, Young, Fred or fecking Matic. Hell I'd rather he plays number 10 over the useless Lingard, he would probably do better than Mata also. I liked Daley, one of the few good players we brought in for a decent fee.

I'm pretty sure United bought him on the back of him getting the POTY in Holland, as a centre midfielder. Yes I know he's not quick enough as a full back and not tall enough for a centre back...that's because he's a midfielder. I thought he was a classy player and is better than what we have now, that's for sure. That being said, I've seen a fair few midfielders from the Championship that would walk into our starting eleven.

I'm not arguing his overall quality el3mel, just that I'd rather him be playing instead of Matic and in some respects Mct.

Blind was gash in the PL. We should have kept Smalling and sold Jones and Rojo, WTF was going on there?

He was the player that signalled the start of our half arsed attempt at transfers. Was never good enough to play for Manchester United.

Yet good enough to be a regular for Holland as a regular and won the 3rd place in the World Cup.
Mainstay of Ajax and Holland now. Yeah not good enough to play for a middle of the table Manchester United.
Look at the dross we have now and I would take him back in a heartbeat to play in midfield.
Daley Blind playing at CB has created more chances than any defender.
Yes why would he now even want to come to United? He is winning the Dutch League regularly, playing in the semi finals of the CL, while his former club is lucky that they don't get into a relegation fight.
It's this kind of entitlement of our fans that has been a slow crash of our club.

Marcos Rojo played a WC final, mate.
Blind would’ve been a another “deadwood” we would be trying to get rid of.
People are rewriting history about how versatile he is... , nonsense, he was absolutely rubbish for us at DM (yes worse than Matic), and at LB (yes worse than Young).

Teams would be cutting through us like butter if we played him instead of McTominay as someone suggested.

Correct. Its not that we havent signed average players who arent good enough its that our fans are bad at picking them out.

For example Mata, Lingard and Matic are 3 guilty players so far this season and in the previous one. Yet people celebrated when we let players better than them leave in the summer

Marcos Rojo was good back then, even as a LB. The injuries have finished him and he has lost a lot of mobility and agility, now he is a walking red card due to that reason. Blind is a great player, would not look out of place in teams like Barcelona or City.

He wouldn’t make most of their matchday squads, maybe as a 4th option CB in the full squad but that’s about that.
If he was a great player he would’ve had bigger suitors than Ajax and Roma.

He wouldn't have gotten into any team between 1992 and 2013 for United. You don't win third place either mate. If I remember correctly that team under LvG had some decent players but they overqchieved and subsequently missed out on a couple of major tournaments didn't they? The Dutch must be so proud to have had him in their team. Playing regularly for the Netherlands now is similar to playing regularly for United now. A team with a great reputation built on the past.

Netherlands are one of the top national teams again, you are behind the times.

I still like him. He'd do a better job than matic shielding the back 4 right now.

I like Blind, but there’s a lot of revisionism going on here. He played very well at CB alongside Smalling and would still excel there alongside a pacey CB. He wouldn’t work beside Maguire. We never saw anything to suggest that he was a quality defensive midfielder - indeed he very rarely even played there. To suggest that he would be a good option there is based on no actually evidence. Admittedly he would be clearly be better than Fred, but then anyone would be.

Oh yea, didn't they do well in that friendly tournament thing and then beat N.Ireland 3-1. My bad, they're fecking quality mate!

They play quality football and have some great talented young players, plus some very experienced players like Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Blind, Strootman and De Vrij. The future is bright for their squad, unlike with ours that has many question marks over it.

The Blind story is a lesson for the club. It has to take such decisions with its eyes wide open in order to avoid ending in a Daley alley.
