Scott McTominay | Transfer discussion not performance discussion

Could be good business, if we were able to get a significantly bigger fee than it would cost to replace him with Tielemans or similar (and maybe even bid for Moukoko). Bit tight though and we would need to replace.
How much do you bid for a 50 year old?

Is Kessie an actual improvement over McT?

Looking at the prices of players, we should be asking more than 30mil for Scott.

I'm torn, I don't Glazers would invest if McSauce is sold. They'll treat it as the dividend they missed out on

I guess part of the equation is just how unhappy McT is and how much he is agitating for a move away, don't need negativity in the dressing room or the squad, given the need to replace him (in terms of squad depth) there is Hannibal but would be a massive step up despite how well he has done at Birmingham, cost wise replacing him, would be lucky to break even.

On a personal level part of me would be sad to see a homegrown talent leave especially as he has shown flashes of brilliance, this is too infrequent though.

I would wonder though in ETHs current thinking McT could well be in the pecking order above Maguire and Lindelof at the right side of CB

The thing that annoys me about this, the price of 30m, especially if Newcastle, if we were trying to buy McT he would cost 60m, when we wanted to sign longstaff from Newcastle didn't they ask for 80m or even more? if Newcastle want him and he wants to go, ok but they have money now let them start paying a tax on players like we have to

I doubt Newcastle will go for McTominay, he can play for midtable/lower table teams, like Crystal Palace or Wolves, but not a team that is in the top 6, which includes Newcastle now.

If other teams are serious about him, I would say £30M or thereabouts is a fair fee for him, since he is in his peak years, has a lot of experience playing in the PL & in Europe, and is tied to a contract until 2026.

Just can’t see it in January our squad is small enough as it is

Quite comfortably yes. Whether Kessie is a player we should be going for is something I'm less sure on.

This won't happen this month.

We are still in 4 competitions in January (cannot remember the last time this was true. January 2017 with Mourinho?)

United need every body that they can get to play their part.

Tielemens, Ruben neves now Franck kessie not better than Mctominay:lol:. Also, Declan rice is in the list of not better than Mctominay. This place sometimes.

Yes, though he's nothing special overall. I would only take him on loan till the end of the season if McTominay is sold.

Yeah. I thought he always looked better closer to the oppo area than playing deep.
He definitely is. He is a box-to-box active midfielder. He doesn't have the discipline, passing range, or positional sense to be considered a defensive midfielder. He is good at getting himself about, being physical, and arriving late in the opposition area.

This is not happening, we won't sell to another team fighting with us for a CL spot. It's a shame really.
Selling him, Elanga and Brandon should give us a decent sum of money.

Yeah, I keep think about that game against Leeds where his runs into the area were devastating. Because of our situation he's been misused a lot of the time, and I don't see him as a Casemiro deputy.

Newcastle feels like his spiritual home, I'm sure he'll end up there at some point, but they need to splash the cash considering how much they quoted us for their shite over the years.

I am very positive he won't leave this January. However I don't think Scott is considered by the coaching staff to be on the same level with Casemiro, Eriksen, Bruno and even Fred. Which means that he'll be kept for rotation purpose and maybe next summer we'll look to upgrade Eriksen or Fred and one of the two will go down the pecking order and take McTominay's place as the least used. Probably Eriksen would be that, considering his age, and he might take it easier finding himself more often on the bench rather on the pitch.

Wouldn’t sell him, would cost us more to replace and we’re already short of options with investment needed in other areas. I also don’t think he’s as bad as the rest of the caf do!
He is pretty bad. Now entering his prime years and having been exposed to a decent level with lots of playing time, he should have nailed down his core ability. But he still lacks in a lot of ways to the point that Scotland play him as a CB. If that isnt a red flag for “limited technical ability” then I don’t know what else I can tell anyone. He is a Palace level player at best.

Indeed, ironically he will probably be dropped in to replace Longstaff.

Unless we have a replacement lined up, not until the summer. In the summer it's best for both parties. He'll have a decent career somewhere else.

Absolutely take the money. Bring in somebody on loan for cover if need be.

McTominay is the sort of player we lose for a packet of crisps in a few years’ time. Cash in now like we did with James and Garner and seek the cash.

More than likely! Scotland play him centre-back so wonder is he viewed as a utility player by Newcastle. He is definitely Casemiro back-up at Man Utd, and nowhere near a regular under Ten Hag.

Sell him now. I'm very certain this chance won't come again and the caf would complain why we didn't just sell him 'back then'

Leaning this way as well, if they put in a decent offer just let him go once we have sorted a replacement. I think his value is only going to go down as he plays less football for us.

why we weaken ourselves and strengthen our opponents in a top 4 race? and we could even be in a title race. think this would be really short sighted. i understand most fans are bought into the tik tok's showing 4 misplaced passes view of a lot of our english players, but even with that view you can't think our squad is strong enough to play 3 games a week and let mctominay go for peanuts here

obviously if they pay the kind of money he would take to replace then go for it. fyi chelsea are paying 70-100m for any average player on the market so that is the kind of money he will take it replace in winter

I don't think it's about them being better than McTominay but being a better fit for the team. None of those are DM's in the Casemiero mould which is what we should be going for if we do end up selling Scotty. No point selling him and not getting someone who would fit the squad. We already have Fred as a back up for the Eriksen spot.

We already have 2 players on loan and I don't think we are allowed to register any more.

Surprised Newcastle with their new money and aspirations are after him.
And surprised if McTom's issue is not playing enough, that he thinks he'd do that there?

Summary - surprising!

It wouldn't make sense selling him unless it's mad money. For starters we'd need a squad fill replacement, unless you think Iqbal and Savage or the likes can step up.
Donnie is out for the season, and we have a tonne of games coming, so it'd be quite risky.

No. Also doesn't strike me as a typical Ten Haag midfielder.

So, I gather he might be better player but still not the level required. That being said, although I haven't followed Barca's financial situation that closely, I'd assume they want him to leave but he does not. Is a deal even feasible?

Also, we should be looking to fleece Newcastle. Selling one of our senior midfielders for 20ish million in the middle of the season does not seem reasonable.

Newcastle are growing at an intelligent rate. Like Man City did with the odd superstar mistake.

I think Scott fits that model perfectly. He’ll probably also perform better at a smaller club. Whilst still having a great fanbase.

We've upped the levels in our midfield so significantly since the last game against City that Scott being put forward as a challenger for a starting berth seems a bit silly. Which is a nice little barometer of our progress. Having said that, to let him go without getting a replacement would be lunacy. So it's unlikely, isn't it?
