Replace this guy with Jack Cork or James McCarthy, and no one would notice.
Jack Cork can at least pass, Mccarty is more dynamic. There is a false idea about Scott that he covers a lot of grass and mabye distance wise he would have good numbers but for gods sake his positioning is awful, he runs a lot like headless chicken and his acceleration is pretty terrible as well. I have absolutely no idea why we after all this year had to settle for mediocrity.

Like you said switch him for any central midfielder in the league and noone will notice. Is that good enough to start a crucial champions league game, you know the answer. I know the requirements for the squad is different to what we can ask for starters but damn, the drop in quality is huge and imho we should make ou best to ultimately upgrade him because obviously he´s a bottom table central midfielder who is lucky to play with much better players around him.

In a couple of years when we finally realize or manage to offload him he will play for a team like West Brom and noone will seriously notice. Fair play to the lad though, he´s done ever so well to convince two managers he could be worth a punt in the first team which I never though was possible watching him in the academy. Hate to see comparisons with Fletcher who had much more talent and athleticism even though his first few years were tough.

Mctominay is effective against teams like Liverpool, City & PSG. Team that will attack you with very good attackers quality and likely to have lot of possession. His job in those games to provide more protection, steel in the team & winning second ball. But against team like Leipzig or Southampton level and team who sits deep like Burnley & West Ham, he is less effective. He's limited but I think he has his role in the club that we can use when needed.

Should not be a starter if we aim to win things. Shockingly limited and poor in the air as well.

Bit of a nothing player really. Keeping Fellaini would be better.

I have some sympathy for the fellow. He’s 24 and yet another of the squad who has not been coached to best effect.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his attitude or application. More a case of the club failing to capitalise on potential we’ve had in the system since he joined as a junior.

He’s got a great attitude. The problem is he just isn’t good enough. It’s not his fault. He could have a good midtable career but he’s got no business in the United team & the person to blame for that is Ole for picking him.

Ah another clueless Pogba fanboy. Wake up
Not for us he's not

So you're just going to pretend Pogba wasn't our best player in our last two games? His scorcher against West Ham sparked our comeback win and he dictated things from deep in that second half against them. He also brought the fight to Leipzig with his goal and energy when he came off the bench yet again. You can't be this blinded by hatred. Pogba has had more end product than both Fred and McTominay who both have zero goals and zero assists to Pogba's 2 apiece with much less game time

Give up mate.

Any fan that continues to kid themselves that McAverage &/or Fred are fit to lace Pogba’s boots is an. . . [insult the post not the poster].

Pogba has been underwhelming during his United career but in multiple cameos this season alone [all whilst recovering from covid & be pulled in then out of the team] has done more than they’ve produced in their aunited careers.

The McTom rhetoric reminds of the nonsense Arsenal used to spout about Guendouzi - if he were lining up for a rival week in week out he’d be critiqued harshly; that skit at Chelsea where he continued to recycle possession for the opposition was criminal.

He’s really unskilled. Seen him pass v simple balls straight out multiple times in matches at times. Great attitude, but we need better footballers even in the water carrier role

McTominay is brilliantly effective in certain games when playing with Fred. Games where we defend for our lives and try to catch teams off guard on the counter.

He's a very important squad player with a great attitude and mentality. You'd have him in your squad any day over a Pogba or someone who puts fashion labels over their performance level like Lingard.

Without Fred then McT seems lost, as if it's too much responsibility on his shoulders to do all the dirty work alone. McT is our Fletcher. Same type of player. Play them in the team when home to Fulham and they will be invisible, play them away to PSG with another warrior central mid beside them and they will conquer.

Matic is way past it to be starting in big games, and himself and McT don't play well together.

Scott McTominay = Darren Gibson = Tom Cleverley
Darren Gibson and Tom Cleverley were more gifted then Scott but Scott has more passion in his game but at the end none of them were at united level.

Just No.

Similarities end at nationality & complexion; the comparison needs to end.

Modern day Tom Cleverley

He'd struggle to displace Cleverly in the United squads of the early 2010s, never mind Fletcher. People need to stop disrespecting Fletcher by comparing him with this kid.

Fletcher suffered far more abuse on here than McT ever did before becoming a big player for Utd. There's a stupid amount of hate on here for McT since the Leipzig game. He'll be everyone's favourite again next time he puts in a big performance.

He was also part of the problem v.west ham in a calamitous first half. Or do we only remember the good to suit the narrative?

His goal was good, but that doesnt account for his flaws i'm afraid. Our revival against leipzip wasn't all Pogba, although he played a part sure. He wasn't the sole reason - we've mounted many a comeback without him.

We all know he has good moments and can be brilliant - but he's consistently shown he isnt a good enough footballer to warrant the praise and hype he gets here. We so desperately want him to be our world class playmaker, our saviour but the reality is he's not. He's barely a credible premier league midfielder - he has so many weaknesses (mostly attitude/mental) but this debate has to end sooner or later. He'll be gone within the next 2 windows and good riddance.

Pretty tiresome debating pogba all the time, in this a McTom thread.

Leave it out

Great squad player, definitely has his uses, but should be rotated with better passers.

He is what a squad option should offer [cough Dan James cough]

Fletcher was playing out of position early on when he was breaking through. I recall him playing RM. Fletcher was also breaking through when we were trying replacing Beckham,Keane and Scholes which I reckon would have played a part in the impatience. Mctominay has had a it much easier and leeway due to playing under a non Fergie side with lower expectations, whilst playing in his favoured position and following players like Schneiderlin,Herrera & Fellaini.

A) At Mctominay's age Fletcher was already a key player for us. His absence in the CL final at the same age where we think about McT to still be 'developing' was considered to be one of the major reasons we had such a torrid time against Barcelona. The comparisons between him and Fletcher need to stop. Fletcher was a much better player than McT will ever be, and the constant comparisons are doing Fletch a disservice.

B) Fletcher in his early days was trying to break into a team that was winning leagues. Mctominay has waltzed into a team where fourth place is considered a good season. Different levels of expectation.

C) This has nothing to do with the Leipzig game. Many people, myself included, have felt like McT should not be a starting midfielder for us for a long time now.

Never seen a United midfielder so awkward with the ball before. He has worse technique than Cleverly.

Look at him whenever he receives the ball and how often he gets himself in trouble after that, the lack of natural ability is very plain to see. He also has at least a couple of bad passes every game where he invites pressure on the defense but those are usually swept under the rug.

With all the critcism he gets now, which is fair at the moment, I can see him having a big game tomorrow.

He has had a poor start to the season and he needs to work on his passing. He’ll turn it around and be a good squad option to have.

The Fletcher comparison always baffles me. Fletcher was getting pelted when he was playing out of position on the wing when he was about 19. By the time he was McTominay’s age he was a key player in a title winning & CL finalist team.

Feels like a lazy comparison because they are both Scottish midfielders.

For me I find it hard to have a go at a player that came through the ranks as one of our midfielders when it's not his fault that the midfielders we go and buy (Pogba, Matic, Fred, Herrera), have been average to extremely poor.

I like him because i feel he can occasionally cover the A Class midfielders we go out and buy one day - it's not his fault we dont have many right now.

He is pretty decent when receiving the ball. I'd say his touch is one of his better strengths. His vision and passing range are atrocious though.

Clearly a limited player who is asked more than what his ability can deliver. He is one of those players who would look better in a system.

Great squad player to have around, think people are forgetting how well he played when our other midfielders where injured at the end of last season.

He’s never put in a big performance . He’s so over rated on here . Tell me what does he do on a field ???
Doesn’t create - check
Doesn’t play through balls -check
Doesn’t win possession back - check
Gets booked stupidly - check
He’s came from youth let’s say he’s good -check

He should be nothing more than a squad player but he’s more than that because our only other options there are Matic and Fred

Thought he was crucial to us beating the press today. Some good distribution through the lines as well.

I thought he was dreadful. We’ll never win enough games with McTominay and Fred starting every game.

Him and Fred are such a conundrum. We need the 2 of them to help with our defense but they don't offer enough with the ball.
