He performed better than Matic would have without the ball.
McTominay is much more mobile than Fellaini. Better positional sense too and therefore better defensively. He didn't try anything fancy because A. it's his first match in weeks B. it's against Liverpool, where the smallest mistake could be punished with a goal. And C. Our gameplan after 3 subs didn't exactly suited to play an attacking gameDid he - or can he - do anything Fellaini couldn't do ? Fellaini no doubt a lot dearer but far more a goal threat and creator of goals than McTominay looks.
I'm not really seeing anything too positive at the minute but happy to be proved wrong.
I would like him to show for the ball when Smalling and Lindelof need an outlet instead of literally running in the opposite direction to hide in the midfield. He's bang average comments are just mental.
What do you want from a DM? Hollywood pass every 10 seconds? Playmaking like 32 year old Scholes?
I don't understand. What do you need from him? A sudden world class ability from a youngster who never played regularly? Caf can be infuriating.

I would like him to play a midfield splitting forward pass like Carrick or Matic instead of playing every single pass to Young or a CB. I'm not asking him to be Paul Scholes. I'm just asking him to do some of the basic tasks. Of a DM aside from defending which he does quite well
I'm asking him to make a forward pass. How about that? Carrick did it. Matic does it. Scott needs to add some passing skills to his locker if he wants to make it at this level."I'm not asking him to be Paul Scholes. Just Carrick."

Wasn't bad yesterday. I'm not a fan, and I think he's a Championship player at best, but as long as he wears our badge i'll support him. Hope I'm wrong about him and he becomes a good squad player.
He has a little bit of Carrick about him when it comes to defensive positioning and awareness. He is quite good at blocking passing opportunities for the opposition ball carrier. That forces their players to play a pass they initially didn't want ot play, which forces them to play differently. He's not spectacular, but I can understand why managers like him as an option.
I want someone in a good position and quick to react to the danger around him. When Liverpool were playing okay before the injuries started disrupting the game he was was always on the move but slow to react to the danger around him and get his foot in. It looked like Liverpool would get some joy from that central area.
And then the injuries started and Liverpool were quite poor and rarely tested us in that area. He had one nice moment in the second half where he was in a good position and Liverpool passed it right to him because of that. But most of the time he wasnt in a very good position and wasnt quick to react to the movement and danger around him. Its just Liverpool's attack fell apart other than Salah taking on Shaw for most of the match so McTominay wasnt tested too much.
Also helps that Pogba was our main ball winner next to him
Fletch was a much more attacking-minded player when he first broke through. Granted many people didn't like him on here even though you could see he's got the quality and guts. When Herrera is playing matches like Scott played yesterday, he was praised as being the man of the match in here, yet for some, Scott is a championship player.
Pretty weird.
I tell you what, you wouldn’t have liked Fletcher one bit, when be came into the scene.

As for Scott, I'm not sure yet what to make of him but given Sir Alex and all our coaches rate him and he does have a pair on him I can say I'll be won over before long.
I thought about this and sometimes I actually think it was easier back then for the young talents/new players. If, say, Evans was about to start he knew he's taken care of by his mega partners, feels stable, team's winning anyway, if I don't play well then well, I'm only a squaddie as we've got Rio and Vidic. Even if I'm not on top of my game we're gonna win anyway and nobody notices.I think the problem Fletch had was look who was in front of him for us at the time. Think this made him look more ordinary than he was. Fletch would walk into this team easily.....
Fletcher was a good passer. That gets lost because of his other attributes and energy in his prime. He could switch play and control tempo albeit not as well as Carrick who he partnered with most of the time. McTominay as of now isn't in the same league as Fletcher ability wise.
Great crosser, too. We were spoilt back then for that. Would have easily been the best crosser at the club right now.Fletcher was a good passer. Young players sometimes need to just concentrate on their strengths during games, especially big games like yesterday's. We don't know how much he will shine once he's fully comfortable out there. The coaches would have told him to keep it simple like they would do with any youth player.
You will never find a midfielder to come straight from the academy and start controlling tempo of the game with his passing. That intelligence can be built while playing first team football.

Some bizarre opinions on here at times. Not even given him time to develop although seen glimpses of good work like Sunday. It's either United first team level or championship level. Nothing in between on caf
Have you ever seen a poor passer become good with time? Passing, a lot of the time is instinct, when a player with vision sees a play developing, they won't just stop themselves from picking it out because they were told to keep it simple. Vision is one of those skills that players show at his age.

Carrick used to pick up extreme abuse from our fans for constant sideways and backward passes. He only started bossing games in his late 20s and early 30s.
McTominay isn't really a bad passer of the ball. He just plays it overly safe at times.
