Isn't it true that you do not rate Phil Jones? This is confusing, because he is like a John Terry clone.
I can only assume you've never seen Phil Jones, he's nothing like John Terry except nationality and position.

We need a left-back first and foremost. Quite why we weren't in for Enrique is beyond me. He's nothing special, but he's useful.

That's true. Who do you have that can actually play left back other than Gibbs at the moment? Can Koscielny play full back? That's a terrifying thought.
Vermaelen was a left back at Ajax. I'd personally sign two players - one centre-half to compete for a first team spot and to ensure Squillaci doesn't play a lot, and as good a left back that is out there. The issue there is that there aren't many decent ones out there at the minute.
I reckon he'll give Chamakh a go at CB.

He is a good player who is excellent in the air. He'd compliment what Arsenal have nicely. Is this guy actually any good? Seen him linked to a couple of bigger clubs over the summer but cant say I've noticed him much up to now.

I don't think he believes that for a second, but if he does, he's potty. Even allowing for the fact Vermaelen has only had one good season in the PL, he's left with Squillaci who's shite, Djourou who looks okay but prone to lapses and Koscielny who's much the same. That defence caused them problems last season and I don't see how it will be improved by selling Clichy and being left with the constantly-crocked Gibbs and Traore who Wenger doesn't seem to rate at all.
Unless he plans on playing Vermaelen at LB, which would be plugging one hole and opening another.
Baines is the obvious one but probably some infant
I'd be amazed if anybody rated Traore. At this stage AW has no option but to splash on an experienced PL CB. I hope his solution isn't to play Song back there....
Shawcross isn't as good as Dann IMO.
I think Wenger's done this to get some much needed mental strength in the team. Dann knows what it's like to play in Carling Cup final, and not completely bottle it. About time the Arsenal team bought someone who knows how to win trophies.
Nicked from twitter - That awkward moment in the dressing room when Scott Dann has more winners medals than anyone else..
It can't be since you'd have no one to play in his position in midfield.

They do have Frimpong, and it's not like it matters that he's vastly inexperienced.
He's a very good defender, interesting that Arsenal are starting to get British talent in.
He's strong in the air, brave to go in for challenges and comfortable with the ball at his feet and taking it forward
There are a lot of similarities with Terry. But speed isnt one of them. Like Smalling, Jones has plenty of it
Rather he is simply a center back who is brave in the tackle/challenge and good with the ball. Qualities that have nothing to do with being in the top 4 in the league.... basically a centre-back then, who's English and admired with rosy tints...........

Jones is all right but there are people on here who make out that Smalling and Jones are the 3rd and 4th best central defenders in English football sometimes.

Ruptured his testicle
It was immediately confirmed he would miss tomorrow's vital clash with Premier League basement boys Bolton at Ewood Park and is expected to be out for six weeks.
Kean said: "Our physio cannot believe it. He has two players out with problems that he has never come across before in all of his years experience. Scott Dann has come in and played so well to replace Phil Jones, but in our last match he was hurt and it now transpires he will be out for six weeks with a ruptured testicle."
