Sky Sports News understands Arsenal have opened preliminary talks with Birmingham over a possible move for defender Scott Dann.

Dann is widely expected to leave St Andrews during the transfer window in the wake of the Blues' relegation from the top-flight on the final day of last season.

The imposing centre-back formed an impressive partnership with Roger Johnson before an untimely injury in January curtailed his campaign and contributed to the club's eventual demotion.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is known to be keen to strengthen his defence having seen their hopes of silverware undermined last season by deficiencies at the back.

And the Emirates Stadium outfit have held initial discussions with the St Andrews club over bringing the 24-year-old to North London.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Stoke have all been linked with the former Walsall and Coventry man this summer.

But it now appears that Arsenal have jumped to the head of the queue for the player who moved to Birmingham in a £3.5million deal in the summer of 2009.

Wenger is likely to have funds to invest in the transfer market with captain Cesc Fabregas expected to complete his multi-million pound return to Barcelona in the coming days.
Is this guy actually any good? Seen him linked to a couple of bigger clubs over the summer but cant say I've noticed him much up to now.

He was the best defender at Brum...take from that what you will.

It's like Chris Samba. Good defender and all, but when you play for a mid-bottom level team there are more opportunities to defend well and the mistakes you make aren't amplified as much. With Arsenal there will be a spot light on him from the start.

Think he'll do ok considering they have Scalacci (sp?) and Koschelney (sp?) who are both pretty average defenders.

I remember a few resident gooners slating Samba and Cahill when they were linked with Arsenal so I can't imagine they'll be salivating over this potential transfer.

He is good. But not top 4. Would be good for a 6-10 club.

A Birmingham fan I know said he's potentially top class and he seems to think he'd do well for a top side. Said he's been outstanding for Birmingham and made Roger Johnson look a good player. I think tahst fair comment as Birmingham were decent at the back - just couldnt score any goals.

I'd say he's been as good as Gary Cahill who seems to be target for top clubs - and a lot cheaper probably.

Yeah, I reckon he'd be a really good signing for them.

I'm not sure who they think they're going to get.

There's a dearth of top centre backs who would be affordable for a club like Arsenal.

They may be right. He did look good for Birmigham so I wouldn't count it out.

To be fair when you look at the stats Birmingham did ok in defence, they conceded 58 goals, Blackpool 78 and West Ham 70 (the other teams relegated obviously). In fact Brum conceded less than the 3 teams that finished above them and avoided relegation (including Blackburn, home of Phil Jones), so maybe their defence wasn't so bad.

Their strikers on the otherhand... worst in the league.

Yeah, but in fairness Brum were setup to not leak goals. They were very negative both home and away. Plus they had Foster in goal who is probably the best out of those 4-5 teams at the bottom. All those factors make them look the most solid defensively out of all those other teams.

Shawcross isn't as good as Dann IMO.

I think Wenger's done this to get some much needed mental strength in the team. Dann knows what it's like to play in Carling Cup final, and not completely bottle it. About time the Arsenal team bought someone who knows how to win trophies.

Looked in a different class to Shawcross and Samba but would still be surprised to see Arsenal go in for him.

Yep all valid points.

I think people need to consider, when looking at players like Cahill, Samba and (maybe) Dann, to a similar extent Parker, Barton and people like that, that the style of the team they're in is often a bit negative, how often are they actually exposed or left isolated?

Though I agree with most of those, I can't help but think West Ham never really particularly struck me as "negative". I quite remember actually thinking a couple of times that their troubles were often a result of them being too "open". But I might be wrong.

He's cheap. End of.

Arsene is a cheapskate.

Arsenal fans get ripped off every time they go watch Arsenal.

How did Brum's defensive record change when he got injured? I don't recall it getting noticeably worse. It was scoring goals that was their problem.

26 goals in 27 with him and 40 in 22 without, from a quick glance.

Ah, then it's 18 in 21 with, 33 in 17 without.

I understand why they are going for him now.

I classify a top 4 defender as: Intelligent before brute.

I classify the rest of the league's defenders as: Brutes before intelligence.

Of course you have your John Terrys that wiggle their way in, but for the most part, the defenders needs to have brains and composure. The lower teams only require you get the ball and blast it up to their target forward. However, the other teams play out from the back. That's why Rio and now Vidic (and soon to be Smalling who is getting exceptional at this) are so great. They don't rely on tackling, but are quite capable of it when called for. And it's because they read the game and intercept.

Dann is alright, Arsenal are in need of bite and someone who can actually stay healthy. He'll be good, not great.

I don't personally think JT is the greatest ever defender, but he's so underrated on the caf it's untrue. It's almost as if people think he's a midtable defender. He isn't.

Isn't it true that you do not rate Phil Jones? This is confusing, because he is like a John Terry clone.
