Scotland Euro 2024 Squad and Discussion

Dominating the game but struggling to score against Gibraltar...pretty poor to not have yet.
 
We've been pish for a while.

Honestly think we'll struggle to get a point at the Euros.

Me too but I think aside from Germany the other sides are relatively closely matched in the sense that on their day, it's a 50/50 game.

It's cool to be the first game of the tournament but ideally you'd rather not have that pressure and you'd like an easier game to try and kick off with a win. Don't want to be playing catch up from the off.

You guys could try and knick a shock win in the opening game.:cool: That would make the Group extremely interesting.
Would love to see that normally as I really like your National Team for a long time but from a Swiss POV the best thing would obviously be a German Victory...

True. Reckon the games between Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland will come down to a single piece of quality or mistake. Saw that in the last Euros with that freak worldie from Schick deciding the first game.
 
This a tough watch. Scottish players run like me in a dream.
 
Very frustrating first half. We’ve largely dominated but have been unable to score. A microcosm of how we’ve been since October.

Finland and Iceland aren’t Scandinavian (they’re Nordic countries though) but I get your point. Scandinavia strictly only refers to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Sorry for being pedantic.

Sometimes they're included, but if you want to be pedantic then we can change it to Nordic counterparts. ;)

Don't think it's too bad (unless we lose). We looked fairly comfortable when the majority of the side that will start the euros were playing. Just need to cut out some of the silly errors we like to make but that's really down to quality of the side which is mixed.

Yup. It’s ended 2-2. Very frustrating result. I’m probably overreacting yet again but still. We do need to try and stop those stupid mistakes, but fundamentally we’re rather mediocre player wise and I can’t see us breaking our curse of never getting out the group stages in this tournament. 1974 (where we finished on 4 points and conceded no goals but didn’t progress because Yugoslavia had the same points total and goals conceded and scored 9 against Zaïre, while Brazil had the same points total and goals conceded but scored 3 against Zaïre) and 1990 (where we were one of the two third placed teams in the group stages who didn’t manage to progress to the round of 16) are by far the most frustrating, although that happened way before I was born and Euro 2020 was the first tournament for which we qualified during my lifetime (I was a fetus during the 1998 World Cup).

I don't disagree, I think what will be our comeuppance is playing Germany first unfortunately. Playing any of the other teams first I think would have helped as we would have been going into it psychologically differently and the occasion would be different.

I was born in the early 60's. Ive been dealing with that curse all that time. We just struggle to produce the players good enough at this level to get us through. It is what it is unfortunately. I have to say the qualifying campaign for this was one of the best I have ever seen us complete and even within that we did punch well above our weight. Im in New Zealand and we are shite at football here too so for me any win of any sort from either team is a big success.

Aye exactly, playing in the first game is cool but also the probable result of us losing will put pressure on us from the off.

Yup. Our qualification campaign was fecking awesome. We had all but qualified after the Cyprus game back in September, and since then we’ve taken the foot off the gas significantly. We seem to be - to quote from the blurb of a football novel I read when I was like 12 about a fictional football club - perennial also-rans, at best.
 
Main problem for me is that we are very good between the boxes, but subpar in them. The easy goals we concede reflect our second-rate defenders. And the inability to break teams down is usually down to not having a true talisman and difference-maker in the attack.

Don't really get why you've gone back to Hanley. Embarrassing him ball watching when that cross was coming in and he looked to his left to just watch the Finnish guy head in.

Scotland's had some good defensive runs in 2022/23. Many of those games had Porteous starting. Also got McKenna who's had 18 months of prem football so interested the thoughts on that. Hendry and Tierney are certain starters either side.

Fair assessment. Our midfield at full strength is very competitive. It says it all about our defence that Grant Hanley is about to get 50 caps - he's a bigger bomb scare than a member of ISIS.
 
Robertson and Shankland removed from training today. Apparently, it's precautionary. Yeah....we'll see.

If Shanklands out I'd not be that fussed tbh, but if Robertsons out I hope we abandon the 3-5-2.
 
Would have liked to have seen Lennon Miller in the squad for the euros. He's young but I think he's going to be a fantastic player and would learn a lot and be a good player to bring off the bench. David Watson looks useful too

Think that's maybe what it will be but Shankland in for Adams and McGregor for Christie.
