Scholes

I have to agree with you. Veron performed badly last year. And Scholes was played in an unfamiliar role. Pity him. :(

This is a situation that can`t continue another season/half season... If so, then Scholes or Veron will be transfered.

Needless to sat Paul is an immensely talented player. There's very little he can't do. However the arrival of JSV gave Fergie a problem he couldn't solve - where to slot Paul in and keep him motivated. He tried to come up with solutions including playing him behind Ruud and even resorted to playing him at times on the left wing which was ridiculous. The situation hasn't changed and if Veron remains as seems likely, Fergie is going to have the same problem. The whole issue of midfield is further complicated by the fact that Butt is probably more compatible with Veron than Keane is. Don't get me wrong Keane remains a fantastic perforemer, by far and away our most consistent and influential. However if Veron is to prosper,as we all hope he does, then Keane is going to have to play a more central holding role, as Butt does, thus allowing Veron scope to display his range of skills in opening up what will continue to be tight oppostion defences. Where does this leave Scholes ? Out in the cold again ? Or a candidate for transfer ? I think given his ability and background plus the fact we don't know if Veron is going to perform for the whole season, it would be a mistake to let him go.
Bearing in mind that Fergie may not get another striker, I would consider playing Scholes as a striker alongside, not behind , Ruud in a 4-4-2 formation. That might solve a probelm or two.

No point in selling players just to buy! The only point to buying is to strengthen the squad, and how many players are there out there that are better than Scholes, Giggs, Keane etc!

Some good points there mate, but last night was a bit of an eye opener. Veron played in the deep role with Keane ahead of him and for the first time Keane was letting Veron get most of the ball. It looked good to me, though poor finishing in the first half meant it didn't lead to much and 4 of the goals came in the second half after the team had been changed around, but in a weird way we looked better in the first half to me. I think Quieroz and Alex will be focussing a lot of their efforts on getting the central midfield just right, and it seems that this time they are prepared to drop players in order to do it, rather than last seasons where can I play them all fiasco.

But I think most people in this board agree on three things (believe it or not):

1) We don`t want to sell a first team midfielder
2) We need a fourth striker, either now or later in the season, plus one or two defenders.
3) It looks like we need to sell in order to buy..

I only partially agree on that one. If we want to sign big and expensive, we need to sell.

But if we want to sign decently priced players, we don't.

Didn't see last nights game so can't really comment. They're obviously right to experiment but it's strange that Veron was playing behind Keane when it should be the other way round I think. No matter, Veron should be given the roving role with a licence to dictate the course of a game, with Keane in the holding role, I would have thought. Unfortunately some will have to sit on the bench which in the present set up may include Nicky Butt and Scholes. At their time of life and in Butt's case following his WC performances, ths may not go down too well but I'm sure they've accepted the squad system. If Fergie is not prepared for whatever reason to play Scholes in a forward role then we're back to square one and we need to buy a striker which may mean selling one of our top players in order to raise the cash needed, unless of course you believe that Forlan is adequate back up or you are a subscriber to the funds will be available once we qualify for the CL theory, which I still find somewhat fanciful.
