SAF's worst signing

My list would be (and I agree with Bury Red - it's a short one) Phelan (never rated him myself), Wallace, Taibi and Poborsky. Half of the players on taht list came through the youth set up so I wouldn't class them as signings.

In defence of a few others.......

- Jordi Cruijff - he never got a fair shot - I remember him playing for Barcelona and was some talent, I think his loyalty was responsible for wasting a good chunk of his career. I have no problem with him.

- Ralph Milne hardly played if my memory serves me well so I don't think he's in the running.

- Greening hardly played either so despite being pony I wouldn't really consider him either.

- Dublin was unlucky breaking his leg when he did and didn't really stand a chance when he came back - a strange signing but not necessarily a bad one though.

- I don't know why anybody's wasting time even
considering Prunier.

- Webb was unlucky with injuries but never really showed what he was capable of - perhaps he couldn't handle the big stage.

- How anybody can slate Blomqvist is beyond me. I have total respect for that guy.

I agree with you about Blomqvist, he played one season as Giggsy's back-up and was more than sufficient. Then injuries took their toll unfortunately. My cable went out last night so I threw the Treble video in. It reminded me of how great he was with the ball at his feet going full speed. He never was as fast as Giggsy but his close control was as good.

I remember watching a game once in '90, right before I left England; Wallace was on his ass for once and someone standing behind me in the crowd mentioned that he's always on his backside. I turned and laughed and his mate said "leave him alone, he has a low center of gravity that's all". His mate replied "Oh yeah? Well his center of gravity must be in his backside coz that's what keeps getting pulled to the earth!"

I had to laugh, they argued all through the first half about it ..... Then, I saw them in the bog standing at the pisser, still going on

Milne didnt cost that much so even though he didnt have a successful time here - it wasnt such a big loss - he may have been one of the worst buys tallent wise... but a bad buy is not just about that!!

Youve got Veron (again Ill repeat - hasnt warranted his purchase price yet)
Youve got Taibi - with us a short time and sold at a loss after a disastourous period at the club)
Blomvquist might have been a decent replacement for Giggsy for 1 season - but then to get rid of him after spending over 4 million on him does not warrant a good signing imo.. And Jordi imo came to united overhyped because of his Dad..again he might have had some good games for us, but wouldnt get near the 1st team these days)

So I hope iv now justified my selections for you!

No! You haven't ;)

It's still too early to judge Veron.
Blomqvist spent a year out injured - luck or in this case bad luck shouldn't have anything to do with judging someone a bad buy.
Taibi just had a mare and the mere fact that SAF wanted rid of him so quickly suggests that he wa definitely a bad buy.
Jordi was not over hyped - he played wel at Barca but was playing far more regularly for them than he ever did for us.

Over to you........

if you spent £1000.00 on a holiday and it was ok for the first few days but then everything was crap (service, food etc) would you consider it a good buy? Would you be dissapointed?

if you spent £30.00 on a holiday and it was crap from start to finish - would you be more pissed off than the 1 above? ya should get what ya pay for!!!

ofcourse there are some exceptions, Cantona,Ole,Schmikes,Keano

Have you lost your marbles mate?

Holiday, footballer, holiday, footballer, holiday, footballer..........nope, still don't see it.

just trying to explain that paying £175k for Milne and getting crap is just as bad as paying £4.4m for Blomvquist and getting only 1 good season.... he signed for 4 so imo was not a good signing! value for money and all that!

And you do understand me!!

;)

i agree, its unfair to label him as a bad signing..

he kicked started our season, with a goal against Southampton..

if we had never signed Dublin he would never of broke his leg, and if had never broke his leg we would never have signed Cantona :D or is that just hindsight and me trying to join up two loose ends into one neat and tidy circle?

But I choose not to accept your reasoning!

Comparing Jesper Blomqvist with a bout of food poisoning during bad holiday on the costa del sol where the hotel pool had no water but formed part of a building site is not a fair evaluation of the poor blokes career at United in my opinion Paul.

I think you understand me..... ;)

I like the imagination!

Oh c'mon. Poborsky was shite. He just didn't cut it. No penetration down the right, always lost the ball. Never adapted his style to compensate. Useless.

Totally different to Jesper, who did cut it - he was a key part of the Treble squad - but was horrendously unlucky with injuries.

Indeed, he was Red enough to want to train for United for free, and United were decent enough to keep him on out of contract, until they could pull a few strings at Everton.

Jesper was a Red. Don't lose sight of it.

I cant believe some have mentioned Veron, that is bloody pathetic

scoreboardpaddock:

Rather than slate everyone and sundry, disagree with everything said, and call everybody who says something daft a glory hunter why don't you counter argue?

To me you appear to be somebody who has a preconceived idea of this site and it's posters and have decided to come in here and tell everyone how manc you are and how manc we're not and not a lot else. You fit the profile anyway.

Why don't you say something instead of posting impotent comments?

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Bosnich! Do you feel he was good news or bad?

As a contributing poster to the thread I can't believe I forgot him! He had a few decent games for us. Perhaps the fact that he came on a free (although I expect he got a hefty signing on fee) excludes him? If not, then you'd have to say he's a player that perhaps most would rather forget!

I think we need to give him more time to settle in.......he'll soon start banging the goals in.

the day liverpool sign an 'ungifted' player like Veron is along way off.... they have neither the cash, the attraction or the reputation in Europe....for the time being content yourself with Everton rejects (Barmby / Xavier) or clown strikers like Heskey who will bang in a couple and live of them for the next few months whilst in the meantime playing...sorry falling over like a some drunken village idiot.

Thank feck for that..

I'd be gutted if we'd signed Veron

Heskey a success

You lot don't expect much of a striker that cost £12m!

Yeah

He was key to our treble last year...

Anyway, rather than go through the whole Veron thing again, and suffer you trying to turn the whole thread round to Liverpool I'll leave this here.

Just keep telling yourself what an excellent signing 28m bench warmer Veron was.... ;)

Again you're trying to make it out that football is either black or white (e.g. a player is either good or shite).

I don't think anyone connected with Man United, not even Seba himself, is satisfied with his form since October. But you've jumped on the media band wagon, and they have managed to make you beleive he's been utter shite this season. The truth is he's been average. Had a few outstanding games and a few shite ones, but most games have been average.

There's still a lot of games still to be played, and I beleive Veron will have a major part to play in our quest for success this season.

I wish, of course, that he had been as good as Heskey though ;)
