Saúl Ñíguez

If we are after young CMs, I'd rather we pursue these ones in this order. Sadly, only 2 are easily attainable.

Youri Tielemans
Ruben Neves
Oliver Torres
Saul
Bazoer
Which two?

Seen some clips of Neves. Looks a super talent.

Never Mind guys, he's come out and publicly said he wants to stay at Athletico for life.

Edit: Just saw somebody already posted this.

Fair play to the lad, there aren't many who'd commit to that.

Tielemans and Bazoer are the easier ones to acquire although Barca are in for Bazoer which leaves Tielemans. Athlethico won't let Saul go so easily despite his £20m release clause. Same with Torres, another special talent who they have been patient with. Ruben Neves would be the most difficult, 18 years old and captain of Porto I believe, and it's Porto.

That said, they all different kinds of CMs. We could buy 4 out of the 5 and still fit them in an XI playing a diamond formation.

Ruben Neves has said the same thing but rumours on him have been hot. Saul and Torres need to cement their positions in the team quick, it might be hard to keep hold of two of them long term.

Could be a Pep tactic of diverting attention and questions when it became clear that the move wasn't being pushed through this summet?
Personally i think we have a young enough defense and attack that we need a more experianced midfield (as good as he is believed to be)
I really dont want us signing a bunch of wonderkids with the promise of more to come. It never works out that way

Wouldn't Neves be easy to get? Expensive, sure, but Porto tend to sell their best players?

Edit: Just read that he's captain. How the feck is he captain at 18

The only kind of transfer United need are;
The best of the best, or
The best young talent

What we do not need are very good players. Our squad is full of players, if developed properly can be very good. We need to raise the ceiling of our quality and potential. It's either we go for the Neymars of this world or the Tielemans. Unfortunately, both categories are the most expensive of transfers. Our squad had been littered with too many good to very good players. We need WC players AND WC potential.

Yes Porto tend to sell their players BUT for obscene amounts. They make Daniel Levy look like a novice. He's primarily the 3rd choice captain but the higher two are not even regulars. He is a really good prospect. He is a DM that reads the game well and has a really good touch on him. I enjoy watching him play, a little bit of Busquets about him.

Oh well, we still have to address midfield, the CM's we have bar Schneiderlin have very little mobility and in the double pivot both need to be able to cover ground.

It's crazy isn't it that addressing has been a mainstay problem for us for so long. IMO, if we really mean business and want to revamp our midfield for the future we'd go for this.

Schneiderlin - Solid and mobile DM with best years ahead of him.
Herrera - Good energy and keeps things ticking. Best years ahead of him.
Tielemans - A must buy. Don't be fooled because he is only 18. Around 100 senior appearances under his belt. Brilliant passing range and a cracking shot. £20m
Neves - Just like Tielemans. Would surpass Schneiderlin in no time. Great one for the future. A real leader too. £30m ish
Goss - Left footed Carrick to be. Let's see how he progresses though.
Pereira - I'd pick him over Torres cos he is free and will surely progress.

This would be my dream midfield for the future!

Then I wake up and realise we are playing N'Castle with Fellaini and Carrick in midfield.:lol::lol:

Theres a balance though. There are many highly rated youngsters that faded into nothing. Imagine this were 13 years ago and we signed Reyes / Joaquin / Quaresma and the like thinking we were hoovering up all the talent for the future. It seems ridiculous to me that people think we can find the superstars of tomorrow in a few transfer windows and have them all fullfill their potential. Finding one player this way woul be a fantadtic success, finding two or more would be miraculious.

I really get your point here about balance. The kind of youngsters that tend to progress are the ones that have enough exposure and game time. I'm not interested in a youngster that is not even a regular in their current team. Guys like Tielemans and Neves are a class above the rest of their peers and they stand out in most games AND they have more game time and responsibility than most young players could even dream of.

I don't think we need a cm right now anyway, if we're going for anyone in January it should be a winger/forward and maybe a left back if we're lucky.

Change Tielemans for Gundogan and we are on the same page, the fantasy page sadly, but still. :D

If we can get the CM now though there's no reason not to, it will avoid having to play Fellaini there.

What ever happened to tapping up players before you bid?

T'world's gone mad, I tells thee.

Should be focusing on strengthening our forward positions a bit more though. It'd be nice to get a CM in too but could probably wait until summer.

Anyway, Van Gaal has said he doesn't tend to buy in January so yeah.

I don't think buying one prevents us buying the other though, if there were attackers available we felt were worth buying now I think we'd get them.

I know he said that, hopefully he's bluffing as I agree that more than anything we need a forward to add goals to our dry front line.

Philosophy
............................de gea.................
Mcnair.. Jones... Smalling... blind... Rojo
Schweinstiger.. Carrick.. Schneiderlin.. saul
................................Fellaini.................

At least we might bore opponents to death?

If Ben Pearson, a 20 y/o CM with zero first team experience, leaving was the last straw for you, you were already at breaking point. Don't know anything about this Saul guy, but on paper I'm all for signing a young spanish CM who's playing regularly for one of the best teams in the world.

It's this principal of buying multifunctional players that ticks me off, if you want a CM than buy a CM, you want a DM then buy a DM, not a player that in theory can play DM, CM, LM what happens if he comes and plays under LVG, you can bet he'll turn him into a Daley Blind playing him at CB and LB too. We don't need more multifunctional players, we need specialists in positions.

With thanks to @Dos who sent me this link:

Which says the buyout clause is set to €45m

I was a bit taken aback by that because I remember Saul signing in early 2014 for 24m or so, However according to:
http://www.teinteresa.es/deportes/futbol/Saul-Niguez-renueva-Atletico-Madrid_0_1351665122.html
he renewed in May 2015 for a payrise and an increased release clause.

So, who's right about the clause (or the conditions on appearances etc that may effect it) I don't know. But it might be that Saul's statement is because he knows that United won't trip a 45m clause rather than he isn't interested.

I liked the look of him on Tuesday, i think he'll become a very good player sort of like Herrera, i see no reason as to why wouldn't Woodward go for him even without the manager's approval.

He's had a good run since the turn of the year and was excellent in the last 2 matches, especially against PSV. Proper box to box CM with the physique for the PL.

Saul, Herrera, Mata and Dave. Spanish revolution!

i cant see it with this guy, think he is bang average and the worst player in that Atletico side. Thought he was poor in this week game against PSV even though he had one great action towards the end of the game.

Was arguably the best player on the pitch when they beat Madrid a few weeks ago.

because he is that good!
Id take him over sanchez who we seem to be linked with much more often at much higher prices - that said portugal could have a fantastic midfield over the next few years with the likes of Silva and Guedes as well

Cheers. Haven't seen any of either to be honest.

With regards to Saul, he has really impressed me this season. From the talk here, I thought he was supposed to be this fairly limited DM, but he seems much more of an all rounder than that, bombing forward and showing skill as well.

Saúl Ñíguez is having a good season and has added goals to his game. I think Ñíguez & Pjanić are ideal midfielders for our situation.
