Clause or not, he has come out again and reaffirmed his intention to stay at Atleti for 10 years.

Never ever happening. We were supposed to be buying him every second when Van Gaal was here.

Idrissa Gueye and some young Mexican dude will be our midfield signings, with Garner slowly groomed for big things next season.

He'd be a great signing, but probably a no go. Would depend on if he'd want to come.

What is his release clause?

No thanks, signings like him would have us stuck where we are for eons. Since when did he become so underrated.

About a 2% chance Ath Madrid would sell then about a 0.5% chance Saul would agree to the move.

In other words it’s bullshit.

Apparently €150m and Atletico won't let him go for less.

Saúl Ñiguez is an old dream in Old Trafford

The Atleti needs 80-90M for a striker, but Lemar is the first exit that shuffles the club

The sort of player we should be aiming at.

good all round player, works very hard and is used to being part of a team unit. Probably just a rumour but I’d be happy.

He's been a long term target to be fair. There's definitely something in it. Surprised at the quoted price there though.

I don't see it happening. I think it's the boards way of telling the fans that we are watching big names, without wanting to mention who are priority targets are, whether Kalvin Phillips, Sander Berge, Longstaff or whoever.

Oh ok.

There is no way he is leaving Atletico for us. He has several times mentioned how much he loves Atletico and how he wants to play there the rest of his career

If simeone goes
If he wants a fresh challange
If Barca and real are not interested
If we have champions League football
If we are playing a style of football he think suits him
If he does not want to work with pep
If he does not want to live in London
Then perhaps we have a slim chance... Far too many ifs though... Great player and I'd love him here but not gonna happen

Why on earth would he come here?

He's one of those transfer rumours that comes up again every few months, everyone gets super excited, then we don't even get close to signing him. We were told by the media that all we had to do last summer was meet the low release clause of Thomas Party and he was ours.
But it could happen for sure due to Atletico needing cash, but he's in the first XI, playing well, doesn't want to leave, especially for a non Champions League team, so there's every chance he will reject a move to Utd, even if we offer bigger wages. Erling is not coming in January either. We will not get into bed with Raiola again.

He comes up consistently because we've monitored him for years, since the Moyes era in fact. He's probably got the biggest scouting dossier of all our midfield targets. Atletico aren't looking like the force of old and we've had sustained interest. Partey was never even mentioned until a clause was known, so I'm not sure what relevance that holds.

Oh, this is an original comment. Can’t get enough of people blindly asking why a player would want to join one of the biggest clubs in the world and make them better.

Edit: beaten to it twice. Good.

Now I think its highly unlikely we'll sign him but how has his form been over the past two seasons ?

I must admit I haven't watched Saul's Atletico De Madrid performances since his game against Bayern, where he scored a peach of a goal.

Because we are the biggest club in the world playing in the worlds most watched league.
I agree the country and league are a large pull, however I would imagine that if he were available, we would probably be second choice at best - I can’t see Guardiola (or City themselves, regardless of manager) passing up such an opportunity. That’s not even considering Liverpool, who I would assume would also be interested. At least due to Atlético’s poor season thus far we might not seem as big of a downgrade as me may have previously...

I wanted him over Rodri, saw him as a more like-for-like Fernandinho. Thought it'd be impossible due to the contract & love of the club. He's apparently not having the best of seasons though.

Perfect midfielder for us.
What does he offer? I'll have to honest, I haven't watched much of Atletico Madrid through the years and whenever I've seen them, he hasn't particularly stood out.

Has a great engine, but I don't know what his other main qualities are so it would be interesting to hear more knowledgeable opinions on the matter.

He’s an all rounder, with a high level of ‘all-round’. Like a better version of the two we have at the moment. He, as you said, has a great engine, but can also dribble, score goals and pass well. I remember when he was on loan, I think at Santander - he played most of the season at centre half, so he has a season at the back in La Liga under his belt too, which would have helped his defensive skills.

He won’t have the best goals or assist stats, but will contribute well in all phases of midfield play. In a 3 man midfield I think you need one like him, you need one defensive, one more offensive and one half and half to help both. He’s that guy.

Sounds great, to be honest, but do you think it would be worth a potential club record transfer fee? My thing is that we need a lot of reinforcements for quality and squad depth as well, so we need to be spending very wisely from now on.

You raise a good point about the fee. The reality is, we need a few players and they can’t all cost £100m.

The thing with Saúl is that I imagine the common view amongst fans is that he wouldn’t be worth the outlay, simply because we are in an era of statistically assessing player. As said, he won’t top the assist charts, goals charts, or probably tackles chart. For me though, this type of player is key to a midfield, a player that knits it together. He could be the difference of a team moving symbiotically and being disjointed. Chelsea, for example, have Kovacic doing this job this season to an extremely high level, and if he is removed from the unit, it would need WD40. But he takes the ball in all areas and moves it around, and has great energy.

Why can't we just buy whoever Atletico has as his replacement? It will be a lot cheaper with equal quality, and easier to get.
