Ryan Tunnicliffe

He's done well in a wide left position apparently, which is weird given his style of play. Could be good for his development.

If they get promotion, we should give him next season there as well. A year as a regular in the PL as a 21/22 year old will show us if we should keep him or not. If not, it will give us a nice profit after a season in the top flight.
 
I don't think I've caught a single game he's featured in since the loan move so I'm not even sure how he's getting on/progressing. I just read positive comments from McCarthy quite regularly.
 
I'm sure he would be a good championship player, can't ever see him progressing enough to be a united player.
 
Thought it would be worth bumping this as well. Apparently Fulham have bid for both him and Larnell Cole according to sky.

It's a confirmed deal now - Tunnicliffe and Cole both signed byFulham on permanent deals.

It's a shame - many spoke highly of both of these guys. But haven't followed them much in the last few months so I really don't know how they've been progressing.
 
Tunnicliffe's been doing very well for Ipswich this season. He's a better footballer than many give him credit for and he should be a hit at Fulham.
 
Youth players are pretty much doomed going forward, unless of course they are one off talents like Januzaj.

They are if they don't have a lot of talent, great dedication and patience.

Tunnicliffe was always likely to fall a bit short in the talent department unless he adapted his game to be more tactical/defensive, in my opinion.

Bit of a hollow statement. As Drainy says, if you've got the talent, dedication and a bit of luck you're always gonna be given a chance at United. There must be half a dozen kids at the club now who tick the first two boxes.

Having talent, dedication, and a bit of luck isn't enough. The kids today need breakthrough ability to reach the first team, which isn't likely to be easy given that we are about to embark on a buying binge of established players from the outside. Januzaj's success this year has likely obscured the long term reality that the pressure for us to keep pace in the league will mean less risk with youth players and more reliance on established players from other clubs.
 
There are probably always going to be squad places or first team supporting roles available to youth team players. We look like we'll be improving the quality of our first 11 over the summer, but the depth has to come from somewhere and having high quality depth to a squad that is happy to play a more limited role/ enthusiastic when given opportunities is expensive.

It's very rare that a youth player comes in and becomes an important first team player like Januzaj has anyway, for most it's a process of coming into the side, doing a job, showing energy and flashes of talent, then being taken out of the side when they need it/ the important first teamers return and building year on year until the team needs them to step up and 'be the man'.
 
The writing was on the wall when he got done for drink driving not long after is debut in the league cup. At least his dad won that bet.

We're not gonna be able to keep up with City and Chelsea if our sole strategy is to spend big on sure things. We need to be better than them at scouting and we need our academy to be better than theirs. Coincidentally, those are two pillars Moyes leaned on to keep Everton ahead of other clubs of similar stature and I'm sure it's a big part of the reason why Sir Alex wanted Moyes to succeed him despite his having won sweet feck all in his career. There's currently a revamp of the English youth development system happening which hopefully will allow us to produce Welbecks - if not Adnans - with more regularity.
 
Tunniclife never looked to me like a player who has a chance of making it here. Liked Cole more, but I don't think that he could ahve succedded for us. Best of luck to both of them and hopefully they do well on their career.

Not really, there's one thing being a good player but then another being good enough for Manchester United.

You're right in the sense that you need that special quality to just be able to break through into the first team which highlights just how extraordinary Januzaj is considering he is years younger than a lot of these older players who have been going out on loans for a couple of years.

Tunnicliffe just doesn't have the overall talent to play for us. He's not a bad player, and has some qualities and is far better on the ball than you'd expect of him but he just doesn't have enough in his locker IMO to stand a chance here.

The way I see it, we have him and Pearson who in a sense are 2 similar type of players, except pearson has more in his locker and has better technical quality with the ball at his feet and a couple years his junior. It's clear to me at this stage which one of the 2 will be more worthy of the chance to progress with. Although that's not to say that he's anywhere near as likely to make it, we'll have to wait to see how he fares in the Championship or wherever he gets sent to maybe next year.
 
Good luck to him and Cole. I think Moyes has made it obvious, we'll be buying in that position. I'm sure we'll see other youth players being given a chance but we're obviously looking for impact players like Mata etc.
 
Can't say I'm surprised. I never thought he looked that good for us. Same story with Cole although the latter's been hampered by injuries.

Yeah but don't you find it shocking the Cole not once went on loan and has just been sold? I just don't get it at all. I'm not saying he would have made it here, but surely a loan move would have been better for us.

I think he was a victim of poor timing TBH.

When he was due a loan his injuries made it difficult to get him a good club I think.

He looked a talent a couple of years ago but he stagnated and to be honest he was never going to make it now.

He did stagnate I agree with you. Even for the first half of last season I was wondering what the hell happened to him and then in the second half he really transformed and started banging in the goals. Hopefully this move works out for him and he builds a career. I also agree that I don't think he would make it here, but it would have been nice for him to have gone out on loan and for us to see for ourselves how he does in a first team environment.
