Exactly this. I'm not doubting he's good. But he would immediately be benched if say we got Bellingham and FDJ. I want someone on their level.
And that's a good thing isn't it? To have a bench player with the quality of Neves?
City have better players than him on their bench, and it's a big reason why they won the league

50-60 seems the going rate for a guaranteed top 6 squad def/mid player.
The issue would be if he wants exorbitant wages.

as an example Everton and West ham are rivaling each other with 30m bids for Onana who’s only just breaking out.

Cheers man.

He keeps the ball moving, loads of Carrick like passes there, I like how he was passing it after taking a first touch and out to a teammate with the second touch, he would suite us well and ETH would coach him into better things hopefully if the move was made possible but my thinking is he would be the perfect partner for FDJ.

How is he's Defensive side of the game? Please another video would be better!

I just don't think he'd be that much better a bench player than having Fred and McTominay as our bench.

he's on the last year of contract. He's not gonna cost 50m

I haven't watched him quite enough so I'm not sure about his defensive side.

This is another video I found of him that shows his all round play

I just don't see how anyone can think he's not much better than McTominay. Other than speed and height (which are good to have but not exactly key for a central midfielder), Neves is comfortably better in pretty much every single way. He's also far more suited to play the 'connector' role, linking the defence to the attack.

Exactly, the idea that we can or should only sign world class midfielders is a crazy to take to have. Firstly they are bloody hard to get and secondly our midfield is shite as it is. If FDJ rejects us and we don't make the CL next summer, we should still only go back in for FDJ and Bellingham to be rejected again and stick with McFred and academy players?

I wouldn’t buy another Portuguese player until Ronaldo officially leaves.

your not going to get players on that level if we're in the conference league, which is where would be if we played Iqbal and Savage for a year based off of a few pre season games.

We're not going to get FDJ and Bellingham though. Whether people choose to accept it or not we're just not very appealing for the top players anymore. Historical success only gets you so far. We need to build a good solid team with smart signings; players who genuinely want to be here and fight for every ball, and we need to get to a point where we are good enough to consistently reach the CL and get past the group stages, as well as be seen as a club that is on the up rather than a graveyard for players careers. Think people need to reset their expectations a bit and realise this process isn't going to happen in one or two transfer windows

I'm sure Neves will be delighted to join us after us spending all summer ignoring him and chasing another player who never wanted to sign for us

Granted, Neves might not be on the same level as FdJ.

However, we keep hearing a new buzzword/phrase at Old Trafford since EtH has been appointed. The word is "system player". This is the reason United are desperate for Frenkie. If the number one target cannot be signed and if Neves fits the profile of being the player required for the system to function well then I don't see an issue.

It's been the scatter gun approach of buying players over the past 10 years who were successful at their previous clubs but did not suit the club/coaches' way of playing that has led us to failures and massive amounts of money wasted.

There were reports that Neves actually wanted Barcelona at the start of the summer. As you point out, not sure that Neves would actually want to join.

United still has an attraction and the extra money he would earn would soothe his ego being ignored over the summer.

A purchase price between 45 to 50 Million would be regarded as a decent price for an established Premiership player. The club paid around 40 for DvB who's been a disaster purchase so far.

Hearing he wants to stay at Wolves. Finally some good news. Nowhere near the quality of upgrade we need right now

He is apparently close to signing a new deal

Kinda surprised people are moaning about him when there so many wanking over him the last few years. Don't know if he's good enough to replace FDJ, but he's definitely a good passer and can defend the space in midfield and he is premier league proven. Not a bad plan B if I'm honest.

I hope we move for him now. We cannot face a whole new season with the same dire misfiekd

Can't understand anyone saying bad things about Neves, only a couple of years ago the same people were touting him as a world beater!

He's a great player and would be an absolutely outstanding addition to this side.

I rate Kenneth Taylor from Ajax higher than Neves.

Kenneth Taylor MV.4,5 mill euros > Ruben Neves 40 mill euros.

Save the money on De Jong and Sesko

De Jong + Taylor + Sesko would United transfer window complete

Only Taylor + Sesko and without De Jong = Good enough for top 4 and champion league. But harder for premier league title.
But with onlu Taylor and Sesko. Should be good enough for top 4.
With the De Jong and those 2 = A lot closer to premier league title. Close the gap between City and Liverpool.

Get FdJ & Neves.

Ship out Donny & Garner to help fund it.

de Jong
Bruno - Eriksen

Neves
McTominay - Fred

I like him but I agree here. The massive improvement people expect he would bring is mostly explained by the criminal underrating of our own players. He’d probably face all the same criticisms a few weeks after joining.
With some slowness sprinkled on top

I don't rate him as better than what's already here. If he is, it's marginal.
He’s significantly better than our remaining CMs at some stuff. His passing is better and his positioning is better. Very important to us. He doesn’t score so high for mobility.

I’d rather have someone better but I like what he’s good at. He would be expensive but that’s the way it goes; I don’t want to pay less money and get someone worse.

He's better than De Jong.....
And actually might want to come to our club. Sign him up.

Have there actually been any links recently?

This thread was actually only resurrected after Ornstein tweeted about Chelsea going after de Jong!

I’m a fan of any midfielder that is two footed, controls the tempo, and can dictate play. If
The price is not exhoberant I am all for signing Neves. We need options and depth. Signing him should not prevent us from signing another midfielder next window (I don’t think we are getting FDJ). Competition makes teams better!

I've seen him in the flesh at Old Trafford. He comfortably controlled the game and made our midfield took like amateurs. He is head and shoulders better than anybody we have starting in CDM this coming Sunday. Klopp will end up signing him and he'll be their solid captain for a decade and we'll all be like, "Why didn't we get Neves when we had the chance?"

Neves is on the last year of his contract isn't he? So he shouldn't cost much surely?
If we can get him for a decent fee I wouldn't mind him at all. Any upgrade on McFred is welcome in my book

Also, I think any progress would be gradual, and that would mean signing players that weren't as good as we'd like, but would be a nice bridge to the quality that we want.

Last year of his deal? That's interesting. A lot of clubs will be telling him to hold off a year I imagine and they'll give him a nice signing bonus. Unless he's cheap now, which is unlikely.

Fred is more mobile, but that's it. Neves is better positionally, is a better passer and has a good strike on him.

Fred's a bit of a 'nothing' player for me - fills a gap and does OK, but doesn't really excel at anything. I'm not saying he's bad... just average.
That’s not true. Fred has his limitations but he also has strengths that give us value. He is the best presser of the ball in our team. And the best at recovering the ball and transitioning into a counter attack. His passing and distribution is inconsistent but he definitely has value. He would excel playing higher up the pitch and winning the ball back high.
