Roy Keane

I'm not sure he did mate, his this Q&A he said that he thought at the start of the 05/06 season that it would be his last. Maybe he thought he could drag that out in Scotland but as you say his hip seemed to be really bothering him late in his career. He lost a lot of his mobility and he was what 35 wasn't he?

Didn't see that, and he may well have done, but he was probably just managing expectations, but i'm sure in his head, even with the injuries he thought it would be a walk in the park in Scotland compared to the Premier League and providing his injuries held up he'd expect/want to carry on.

"It'll sell more books Bryan, trust me" said the publisher
Absolutely this....All book publishers will try and generate some spice and will amp up any potential story they can into a nonsense controversy.

"Successful footballer thoroughly enjoys his fulfilling career" is only going to shift a few copies to the absolute fans of the club. Tales of bitterness and intrigue will draw in fans from other clubs and maybe even some non football fans too if the story is spicy enough.

I was a big fan of Roy as a player but now he leaves me cold. His bitterness and resentment is not really justified and I don't believe he is telling the whole truth either. It does seem like there was a growing distrust between himself and Ferguson and Queiroz seems to have been put in a position to bear the brunt of that.

Given How big a deal Roy was in Ireland at the time and his connections with leading figures in Ireland I wonder if the whole Coolmore row was the seed of the growing distrust. The "99 questions" for Ferguson to answer must have been sourced from people within the club. Interesting that he is using some of that rhetoric in this video, questioning Fergie about his son and brother etc.

When it comes to financial propriety and distractions from the game he's has never been the saintly figure he likes to portray either.

Psst, i've got a reinforced tin helmet going cheap, and a safe house if you need it.

Listen to reverence Neville has for Keane at the end of this clip. The class of 92 get put on a padestal at United, and rightfully so, but it shouldn't be forgotten, because of a personal spat of all things, how important Keane was to our success and how loved /respected by our squad. He was the leader and probably best player, of an all time great football team, not just ranting and raving loon many make him sound to be.

He holds a grudge and let's loose about it every now and then. Don't really see the fuss. As incredible SAF was, he isn't beyond criticism or pot shots. Let's not turn him into a deity.

Thanks for posting this bit. I didn't watch the full interview, saw bits and pieces and didn't like it. This is brilliant. The way Neville was talking about him is unreal, it's like kid meeting his hero.

Also obvious that Keane liked these players.

He might have done but he wouldn't have been doing anybody any favours and it would have been painful to watch, and as a man from Cork he'd said numerous times he would love to play for Celtic I just think his hip injury got the better of him, he was probably in agony just jogging around the pitch and decided to call it quits. But I think in his head when he moved to Celtic he expected to play on for another 2 or 3 years at least, then move into Coaching/Management.
Oh absolutely,he mentioned it in his book his hip would be screaming during his time at Utd so his powers were definitely waning.

His final full season in 04/05 was actually a decent one form wise and his stats were very good that season but you're right, his mobility was declining. Although Fletcher was much maligned at the time I think it helped Keane a lot to have Darren doing his running for him in midfield which left him to sit and control games from deep.

Brian Clough said that Keane should have dropped to a centre back to prolong his career and there were suggestions that it could have been done, particularly after his brilliant performance at centre back against Juventus in 02/03.

Fergie mentioned that in his second book that was what they wanted to do with Keane as they couldnt have him running box to box anymore. To manage him as he was getting older.

Keane has gone long unhinged and seems hellbent on being a bitter feck. The memories he gave us over a glorious playing career can never be forgotten, but the less we see and hear from him, the better.

Roy Keane at United. He's the one we need, not OGS.
He's got as much chance of getting the job as Clough had with the England job.

Roy Keane gets a mention in this week’s Popbitch email. It’s things like this and Gary Neville fan-boying over the Arsenal tunnel incident that make you realise that behind the inflammatory sound bites and the image he portrays, there is actually a sound guy who everyone in the dressing room worshipped hidden in there.

Roy Keane drew a fair bit of flak after an appearance in Dublin last week where he savaged everyone from his former boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, to new Man Utd star, Harry Maguire. Many column inches and social posts were written up about what a sad, bitter man Keane must be – but some of his old teammates would beg to differ.

Former United striker Andrew Cole developed some kidney problems a few years ago and, in 2017, underwent a transplant. While he was recovering in hospital, Cole came round one day to find Roy Keane sitting by his bed. The pair had been teammates back in the 90s, but Keane and Cole hadn't exactly been close in the years since – so Cole was a little surprised to see him.

Asked why he was there, Keane simply said that he was concerned about his old friend and wanted to make sure he was OK, impressing on him that if there was anything he needed - anything at all - he only had to ask.

Six months after leaving United for Celtic he retired on medical advice, yet the way some are defending him in here against SAF you'd have thought SAF forced him out in his pomp.

You are having a nightmare in this thread

You are having a nightmare in this thread

He has one in literally every thread he enters. Never noticed him until this week by my god, some utter wank posts from him in here and the ‘Hating Lingard’ thread.

He’s made a holy show of himself in here.

If Walters is to be believed, Keane bottled it when challenged on his tough guy act and didn’t want the fisty cuffs!! Basically saying I stood up to the bully and he backed down.
Manager tells a player he can go when his valuation is met, player tells manager to feck off (Walters own words).
Yep that’s really standing up to a bully, sounds like Walters is the one with a chip on his shoulder in that exchange tbh

Yea that's wrong, BUT Keane removes his jumper and watch and initiates the fight first, then backs down going by Walters story. Quite embarrassing if true.

I'm touched, truly honoured that somebody who averages 18.77 posts a year would waste one of those on little old me, and it moved the thread along so nicely as well, great stuff

Very brave Robert, total respect mate, can't be easy knowing 1000's of people will be reading your post above ^ today and possibly every day till the end of time to admitting, and how can I say this without being offensive, erm that you are a bit fecking slow on the uptake, that is if i'm guilty of these heinous crimes of course.

 Seems like you want to believe Walters. Keane did say he's sent Walters his address. And I don't see Walters doing anything other than throwing empty words in these exchanges either.

Anyway, how the feck does it matter? Keane has proven that he's tough enough on the pitch where it really mattered. His quality and mentality in all that he's won says it all. He is Manchester United's most successful captain isn't he? Who cares what beans John bloody Walters has to spill, really? (Which is none at all)

He’s one of our GOAT’s no denying that. Walters said I’m not coming to fight you at your house meet me outside of work and we’ll do it! Don’t know who’s telling the truth but it’s just more drama surrounding Keane.

Spoken like a person who lives his life on the internet insulting people.

Snowflake. I mean if you think calling out people for slagging off a hugely influential part of our modern history snowflakes, then yes, you have truly subscribed to the modern day phenomena of becoming outraged at things on the internet for no real purpose. The thing that is most striking is that it’s an act from a-lot of people, all this faux-outrage.

You give me a laugh that's for sure. Your posts are truly hideous and that my good friend, is the heinous crime that you have found yourself guilty of. Guilty by majority verdict.

Tbf, I wish I had of noticed you earlier - though you seem an irrelevant sort - as your transparent attempts at coming across as an intellectual and clever kind of chap are bewildering and most amusing. Do carry on, good sir.

Sort it out like men. Why don't you send him your address?

I remember Paddy Crerand was a hard man in his day. Like to have seen both him and Keane battle it out if they were the same age.

Wait are you calling people who say Keane's a bitter dickhead snowflakes or people who downplay how good he was as a player?

Seems like its the first option. Fair enough that you felt the need to call out anyone who thinks a brilliant football player might be a dickhead as a person.

Were you offended by people not liking him or something?

I'm not outraged in the slightest. I just know that a person who mocks another person for crying on TV about his dead mother and sick child is a piece of shit, regardless of how great of a footballer they are. I also know that most people who use the term snowflake usually have nothing substantive to say.

Did he actually mention either of those things?

Tbf, my contributions far outweigh yours in here. I find people that randomly call others out on their posts - while not making any reference to the topic at hand - have nothing to contribute.

The whole premise of this thread along with the thread title is indicative of the hyper-outraged society that we live in. But hey, you seem to think that way so fair dues, carry on your crusade of outrage.

Do you mind sending me the link for the Caf contributions rankings list? Mine isn't working.

He's been trying to make a living just whining about SAF for over a decade now, and frankly at this point, it's more tiring than instigating. He's failed all his managerial attempts and remains firmly stuck in the past, and I don't know if the latter caused the former or vice-versa.
