Roy Keane interview on the Overlap

That was really nice to see. Weren't Juve trying very hard to get Keane when his contract was expiring around 2000?

I think Madrid were sniffing around as well. Keane might have mentioned it on the podcast a while back?

I don't remember Real being mentioned. Bayern Munich were.

And no wonder. He was brilliant. If I had to start building a team based on players I saw play for United, I would start with Keane.

The first time around Juve were linked, as were Bayern. I remember Thomas Helveg being linked as his replacement. Think he only mentioned Real as being interested when he left and went to Celtic. It was obvious Keane was pretty much done, so I don't think it would have faired well.

You also have to remember it was around this time Real actually signed Thomas Gravesen from Everton and were really struggling to fill the void Makelele left behind. Think they ended up signing Gago from Boca, Emerson from Juventus and Mahamadou Diarra from Lyon the following year.

Robbo was better than all of them. I wished he had been 17 when he come to Utd, so he could have had more trophies, as he deserved.
Too young for robbo, was he really better than Keane? I don't think Keane is spoken highly enough by non united fans out of jealously

Brilliant player. Could score pass tackle leader of men and all this on quagmires rather than the billiard table pitches they play on now. Broke his leg twice and ankle, done his shoulder, yet still threw himself into tackles.

I absolutely hated when papers used to print rumours of Keane leaving or refusing to sign a new contract. I remember been linked with Juve, I always thought if we lost Keane we would decline

Robbo's still the best United player I've seen. Keano was great though, not only is he underrated away from United but also by United fans. Especially going by stuff I read on here. When I first joined this place... I don't think there was a United player more adored and highly rated than Keano. Then again, most of those fans had actually seen Keane play at his pomp.

Yes.

Keane was fantastic, one of the best players we’ve had and one of the best midfielders the PL has seen.

Robson just did all of it too (and a bit more), some of it a bit better, and in weaker teams. The greatest United player I’ve seen in my 50 years (Best and Charlton a little before my time)

De Rossi loves him too, here's a quote from Romas website

Speaking to AS Roma official website a few years ago, Daniele De Rossi said: ''Roy Keane is the only person in the world I asked for a photo with, two years ago.

"I couldn’t resist. He is my absolute hero. The no.16 on my shirt is dedicated to him.

"I used to wear No. 4 and my dream was to wear No. 5 of Falcao," De Rossi said
"They didn't let me have it, even though it could have been rightfully mine. There's a hierarchy as to how we get the shirt numbers.

"I could then have got it after one year, but my daughter was born on July 16 and I took that number, which was also the number of Roy Keane, another of my greatest idols. So thanks to Gaia and Roy Keane, I chose 16."
